    my son has a 40ft steel framed featherlight gooseneck and uses a 2022 single wheel F350 diesel. its about 13,000 lbs loaded up with his NE Dirt modified. no tapered nose. he really doesn't keep track of the mileage because he has a heavy foot

    Thanks! Good test and helpful, real world data.
    That's not at all how aerodynamic drag works, but I can see why you would think that. Actual weight of the rig basically disappears from the equation on flat road when figuring aero drag, and only shows up when you start towing up and down any kind of hill or slope.
    So really the whole difference you are seeing in mpg is from that frontal area - the air comes together behind the truck much more with the bumper pull. I will also say that if you put a *long* gently sloping cone at the back of the trailer, you could get a really drastic improvement. Aero at the back pays more dividends than the front, but that's a big wall to fix back there.

      Correct. I asked around and got some good information with answers afterwards and it makes sense to me now.

    Good test! Proof that what we thought is true actually is. Also, BMWs suck.

    Cool stuff. Would be interesting to see a flat front bumper pull vs. your buddy's V-ose. Add in one of the long V-nose snow mobile trailers too.

      I honestly don't think there would be much of a difference between those 3.

    Total frontal area for the bumper pull is significantly larger than the gooseneck. Since your truck's aerodynamic allows air to continue over the trailer. The bumper pull does not benefit as much and so the cd is greater. This is a great example of the difference between the two. It would be cool to see the same test on a windy day when you get head and tailwind on your test.

      Exactly. I would assume the gooseneck would pull even more of a gap and be much more steady in higher wind situations.

    Wonder what would happen to the bumper pull of you put a camper shell on your truck.

      I have heard that helps quite a bit. At least 1mpg better.

    But how can you sleep in a sweet van with a gooseneck setup!?

    You may have said, but I don 't remember seeing the payload capacity for this truck. Just curious.

    Would a Topper/Cap help with the bumper pull?

      @KrebsbachRacing  7 місяців тому

      I think it would. Any way you can close up the gap between them should help.

    Nice truck! Are you going to get an upgraded fuel pump? I heard the CP4s like to blow up.

      @KrebsbachRacing  11 місяців тому +1

      Pretty sure that's a pre-2014 issue. This truck also has factory warranty until 60k.

      All of the ford 6.7 engines, gm trucks from 12-16, ram trucks from 19-20, and the 5.0 cummins in the nissan xd used the Cp4. There is a reason gm switched to the newer Hp4 and ram went back the older proven Cp3 pump.

      @smudgedogg6983 As long as the truck is under warranty I'm not worried about it. After warranty I'll have to do some research and figure something out. I think there are inline filters you can get, so if it does fail, it doesn't wreck the entire fuel system.
