What about a pt 2 on hauler beds in general? Say a 5th wheel prep for a regular bed vs replacing stock bed with hauler bed. Just for Full time 5th wheel travelers/towers
Good comparison video! Disagree with the "harsh ride" statement @8:55....but only when unloaded. If it's a dedicated "3 car wedge" puller or a "hotshot" truck, the more weight on the load, the smoother the ride. Ask any semi trucker and they'll tell you their rig rides like a bumpy old horse carriage when empty, but the weight it's designed for smooths out the ride significantly. But, as a 23 year class A driver, I'M gonna tell anyone to forget about buying equipment for moving cars. It's too many headaches. Get into equipment moving instead and go with the heavier truck. It costs a little bit more but makes a lot more money and is ultimately less work and less maintenance on the truck, which is built heavier duty than the pickup. I started with a pickup and a year later realized I was doing the same work as a semi driver but for less pay, and so I got into specialized stuff that not only paid better, but was easier to keep up with and less frustrating. If less than 30% of your miles are pulling a trailer, get the pickup. If more, go with the heavier truck. Thank you for your videos!!

Rich Z: thanks! actually, oddly enough, it would have been a slightly worse comparison had it been a F450 Pickup. Mainly because the F450 pickup has less leaf springs and a lower payload capacity than the F350 and Very slightly higher max gooseneck towing than the F350. The main advantage of the 450 is the steering radius due to the wider track.
Big Truck Big RV I'd still op'd for the 450 pick up over the 350. The payload is lower because the truck is heavier. Ford wanted to keep it at 14k gvrw so the payload is less. It's not as if the truck can't handle the weight.... It wouldn't surprise me if the rear leafs packs were same
firebry23 bigger rearend in the F450 and it rides better than my old 2002 2500HD does.

There is a place near here that removes the box and installs a custom hauler chassis. This way you get all of the pick up options that you would not get in a chassis cab configuration.
Every time i look for a truck to do some towing with I always come back to this video. Helps me decide. Good video thanks

You said it right at the end. The best option I would think would be a Pickup with a Hauler bed. Plus, with a hauler bed, no one will ask you to help them move.
My '88 f250hd gives a bumpy ride too.
Throw a ton or more in the bed, & it rides like a cadillac!!

I'm planning on a custom built bed to carry tools & other gear. And an f450 or even f550 to do the pulling.
I'm not in a hurry. 330 horses is plenty for me. Nor do I need all the bells & whistles. Just more stuff to break. I'm leaning toward something between an XL & XLT. Simple but nice. I never cared much about keeping up with the Jones'.
I'm still doing my homework right now. And your videos are a TREMENDOUS HELP!!! Thank you, & do keep them coming.

Good point about transferring the vibrations to the trailer. I wonder if there's hitches that can help with that. One reason for considering a chassis cab is that it provides you more choice when looking on the used market. Dualies tend to be fewer, more expensive, have more miles, and are generally more beat up, so it helps to be able to broaden the search to find a value.
There are air ride hitches and even air ride pin boxes. For the hitches, look up ET Hitch, Comfort Ride, Trailer Saver, just to name a few.
Air hitch solves all of those issues

Great point about shock and vibration being transferred into the 5th wheel. I hadn't thought of that. I guess if you really need the tongue weight capability of a chassis cab for an enormous 5th wheel, you ought to spring for an air ride hitch.
For me it came down to price, the only time I drive my truck is when I'm towing something. I purchased my Dodge 3500 cab and chassis for $41,000 out the door with an aluminum flat bed. Pickup trucks that were of the same size were anywhere from $69 to $73.

You could always pull your bed, but you would then have to custom fabricate your own, and you wouldn't have the payload capacity of the chassis cab. HP and Torque are sexy, but payload is why you buy a truck.
or you could buy a tuner, the engines and transmissions are completely the same.. I mess with tunes on our trucks for testing purposes(International trucks), some people want 430hp, some people want 600hp... I put a fire truck tune on our trailer shunter, its' over 600hp :)

I think cost vs how long vs miles per length of time you plan on keeping it. And if you have a business where during the week you haul a multi car trailer or etc. And use it personally to haul your 5th wheel or boat on the weekend

a simple (tho expensive) solution to the harsh chassis-cab ride is to get a Link UltraRide rear Air Ride suspension system. it outright replaces the leaf springs, and it functions just like a lighter-duty version of big rig suspension. The only downside is the cost at roughly 5k w/o install. Its a great system, and thats coming from someone with a 1986 f350 Chassis-Cab.
Changing gear ratio is about $800 per axle. About to change my 2014 F-450 pickup from 4.30 to to 5.38 axle ratio.
Love your channel, i just had to comment about your last comparison about which is better for towing a 5th wheel? You chose the pickup version primarily because it drives better without 5th wheel which doesn't really compare the attributes of hauling a 5th wheel.

One addition... When mentioning fifth wheel you should've specified fifth wheel camper. If you're towing a fifth wheel car trailer or equipment trailer for instance youre probably not worried too much about the vibrations transferring to the trailer as opposed to having a smoother riding pickup
I'm looking at a 2017 F550 single cab for my company and it has an option to put an AFT Axle Frame Extension could you possibly see how far it will extend out?
I like the bed fenders on the new F350 trucks. Reminds me of the dually fenders on the OBS models.

I like the options with the purchase of the pickup, but want to ditch the bed and install a hauler style bed. Are there many issues with attaching a hauler bed on a regular pickup frame? We live in Southern California so any information on vendors of hauler beds would be appreciated.
You should also mention that there are options available to assist with the dampening of the shock to the fifth wheel by using one of the optional air ride suspension hitches or by simply changing out the rear suspension on the cab and chassis truck to use airbags thus giving you the option to adjust the ride height of both the truck and the trailer.

open c-rails don't bust spines.. nor their own back. Seems the sales guys skipped over the tractor trailer traits necessary to get out of the boys with fat tires on a 1/8th inch frame. I got so mad at pickups, I weld my half ton beyond the 1 ton....for decades.

All interesting pros and cons. I think big companies would buy the chase and different gear ratios depending on their job. the chase truck is more for businesses than consumer. reg duel truck fits the bill for majority of your needs.

A couple things to add, standard on a pickup, a pickup comes with a spare tire mounted underneath the truck at rear of truck. On a cab and chassis a spare tire is not a standard option. Yes you can get a spare tire and wheel but 2nd problem comes is there is no storage location for the spare like there is on a pickup. This was the ultimate reason why when I was researching and picking out my truck I opted for the pickup. I know a lot of cab and chassis that have spare tires will mount them up on the headache rack or mount inside the utility / service bed and just my personal opinion that is very tacky. If I have a spare tire on the headache rack one I can not use the headache rack for conduit, tuning, pipe, unistrut etc. and two with a spare tire on the headache rack I and very limited on installing certain tool boxes suck as a knaack job site chest, the larger the gang box or tool box the more likely the lid is to hit the spare tire if mounted on the headache rack. On a pickup where the spare tire is located in between the frame at rear of truck, well on a cab and chassis the fuel tank is located in that location. To myself personally when deciding on my f450 this is what ultimately lead to my final decision of a pickup. Now on a cab and chassis you can get several chassis lengths, this is called “CA” which stands to cab to axle. All ford 8 foot pickup beds have a 56 inch “CA” cab to axle. Ford has several CA lengths such as 60 inch CA, which accommodates a 9 foot bed, and 84 inch CA, which accommodates a 11 foot bed, and I believe ford even offers a 108 inch CA which I believe is only available in a single cab, I may be speaking incorrectly here but I believe the 108 inch CA will accommodate either a 14 or 15 foot utility bed. With the single cab this is the largest wheel base offered between a f350 and a f550 in a cab and chassis of 205 inches, the maximum wheel base offered for a f450 to f550 is 203 inches which consist of a crew cab truck and 84 inch cab to axle, 11 foot bed. One other difference between a cab and chassis and a pickup is on a XL trim level pickup or cab and chassis fog lights are not an option, XLT pickup fog lights are not standard although is and optional feature with the correct package. Cab and chassis XLT not an option, for a cab and chassis the lowest trim level where fog lights are offered on a C&C is a lariat. a C&C truck is typically a work truck 90% of the time, in my personal opinion fog lights are a great tool and feature to have on any trim level and also a safety feature. On a C&C lariat one feature that is standard for the lariat is the seats automatically come as leather, for a work truck leather will just get damaged and this is coming from someone who takes very great care of my vehicles. These are just a few of the reasons why I decided to go with a pickup for my work truck instead of a C&C. Just my personal opinion I love so many of the features and options available on the pickup XLT trim level, one time ford definitely hit right was the ability to have as an option to have carpet delete, meaning rubber flooring. Although one feature I would absolutely love to have I’m an XLT for a work truck is optional vinyl seats. As a work truck you get dirty and nasty working, I don’t need cloth seats to just get dirty. I love being able to easily wipe down my vinyl seats and back on the road. XLT I’m my opinion would be the overall best trim level to have as a work truck, power folding mirrors, keypad entry are just a few options not available on an XL, I have been tempted before to purchase an XLT and pull the cloth seats out and put vinyl seats in myself. I can go on and on about the Ford super duty’s.

What has a higher GCWR, the f450 with a pickup bed or the f550 chassis? What is the max conventional and fifth wheel tow capacity with crew cab?
I want to get a 450 chassis only what would be you opinion on that if I added a hydrolic lift on the rear for motorcycles. The lift will fit on a truck with a bed as well but I though it would be better without the bed to save on weight since adding the lift.
Do state lawn change when you have a different bed on a truck, pickup vs flat bed?

OK, my take away: Full Time living hauling all your possessions....Chassis cab with hauler body. You can load that body up with various heaver items; plus dual fuel tanks (more weight); ride should be OK. Longevity. Price. All the knick knack options unimportant to me. Retired seeing the country...lumbering down the road is fine with me.
Question? In mountain country, with proper gearing, the chassis cab the better choice?

Nice to see the differences between the two. A couple questions that I have is this;
1. would an F350 chassis cab have a frame similar to the chassis cab used in your video or would it be closer to that of the pickup?
2. I've seen F450 trucks with pickup beds on them, do they have the chassis cab frame setup or the pickup frame setup?
3. I would assume part of the reason for the larger wheels on the chassis cab trucks (especially the F450 and F550) is to accommodate larger brakes?

Just got a cab and chassis F350 DRW Diesel for hot shot. Would there be any significant considerations when upgrading from the 17inch wheels as far as truck configuration? Perhaps speed gauge or even engine programing? I have the 4:10
Would I be better of getting a C&C for mounting a heavy truck camper (let's say 5 thousand lbs) vs a regular dually pickup with the tailgate off?
Looking to tow a Continental Cargo Car hauler. The primary purpose is to run karting equipment to and from races. We have looked at toy haulers but the car haulers are 9k lbs dry. The car hauler is equipped with a bathroom and bedroom and we have space inside to store karts. Not a ton of weight. This would not be a primary everyday truck. In this application would the Chassis cab work better in a f250 range?
It looks like the Hauler beds would allow the truck to rotate 90 degrees under the trailer, does a pickup bed mounted hitch allow that much?
I was looking at a RAM 4500 or 5500 just for the bigger brakes compared to my 3500. I tow a 42 5th wheel and the braking can be sketchy sometimes and feels like I have to really get on the brakes even with the exhaust brake. Anyway to improve the braking on the pickup truck setup?

You forgot transmission options, I would go for the chassis cab to get a top loader gear box. Also you could spec air suspension and get it as a glider kit to boot.
Question why do some king ranches come only with the badge on the rear instead of the complete badge that goes all the length of the tailgate?

I have a 2021 grand design reflection 337rls. And a 2015 f350 cab and chassis. 9’4 bed. I’ve been using the offset Andreson 5th wheel to gooseneck hitch. It’s a rough ride. Extremely bouncy. Wanting to know if i put a hauler bed on it and a 5th wheel hitch. Will i have enough clearance in the rear to make turns without worrying about the bed smashing into the under belly of the camper

have a 3500 chassis cab with steel flatbed, use mainly for towing 24' stock trl or 30' flatbed, short on power and poor on fuel, need to make the H.O. engine an option for cab & chassis, or make the dual tanks optional for pickup version, like having 74 gallon fuel capacity when towing, you don't have to stop for fuel always, can the cab & chassis detune of hp & torque be undune besides the deleting & chipping?
Do you know if the 2020 Chevrolet, GMC, or Dodge chassis cab trucks will have a pick up box option for their 4500 5500 or 6500 trucks?
one thing I can tell you with my experience working at a car dealer, an auto auction and a repo company. I have learned that if you are willing to pay for it, companies will do it. you can get a chassis cab king ranch edition if you are willing to spend the 120k+ for it.

iv fallow you for some time and have told several people to watch your Channel.. my question is im looking for info on installing a aluminum flatbed on my older 3500 Dodge Ram Dually i want the 5th wheel hitch connections to be under the flatbed witch means a larger hole through the top of the flat bed have you any info on this type of setup I realy like your channel iv watched probably all of it and 2 times

TShull: Yep. I've compared the 2016 F450 (mine) to a 2017 F350 Dually and I have about 4' shorter radius than the 2017.

At least with ford, the chassis cab truck is de tuned down to about 600 tq vs at 450 with a bed with over 900 tq. I drive a 2017 350 chassis cab and towing a 30’ lowboy works just fine but SLOW.
Anyone know if the chassis and cab fuel tank fits a pickup? I got a buddy he has a regular cab ram 3500 with a transfer flow 40 gallon and he’s parting out I have a regular cab pick up 3500 without the bed cause I’m building a welding bed.
