    Just looking at the first page of the piano score.........you need an "Enigma" decoding machine! Brilliant pianist as well as cellist.

      They're called arpeggios... not so hard if one has any level of mastery of the instrument. That said, it is well played

    Sibelius has also made superb pieces to cello and other soloinstruments. He is not solely a symphony composer

    Sibelius n'aimait pas le piano, estimant que seul Chopin avait su en tirer la substantifique moelle, mais il en jouait lui-même suffisamment bien pour avoir laissé un copieux catalogue - élaboré souvent pour des questions alimentaires - corpus plein de petits trésors qui méritent bien mieux que le mépris des "sachants"...Au cas présent il fait naître de son instrument d'étranges paysages, aux couleurs menaçantes et sombres sans recourir à l'emphase, tandis que le violoncelle chante sa douloureuse complainte : deux musiques différentes se superposent qui vont se fondre, un vrai tour de force...
    "Malinconia", écrite en une après midi, chante la mort à l'âge de treize mois de Kristi, la troisième de ses six filles. C' est une oeuvre rare au concert et cela est bien dommage : l'intensité dramatique de cette courte partition allie l'émotion à la pudeur dans un climat de révolte contenue avant que jaillissent les larmes, et c'est la toute la grandeur d' "In memoriam"que seul un génie comme Sibelius pouvait écrire...

    It's a little puzzling as to why Sibelius did not compose a cello concerto considering this and, say, the opening of Pohjola's Daughter and the 4th symphony, and what seems to an instrument suited to his sometimes laconic moods.

    Sorry but it sounds like the cello is being tortured...complexity and dissonance are often mistaken for genius...Just listen to Finzi’s cello concerto and you will realize just how beautiful the cello can be

    You cant understand the music of Sibelius if you've never been to Finland.
