If in 2024 you are still listening to this beautiful piece by Schubert, you are not alone and I love you! Beautiful performance ... they are true artists
It amazes me how musicians can get so absorbed in their playing yet seem like they are out of body and simply enjoy their own playing. All without a note of music in front of them. Two geniuses.
The more I listen to this performance, the more I love it and appreciate the pure, non-histrionic musicianship of Schiff and Perenyi. Although it is they who are making the music, both have their eyes closed most of the time and appear to be listening to it from far away. Breathtaking. Magical.
Divine piano accompaniment. I love the way Perenyi holds and plays the cello.. as if he is carefully caressing his treasure. shows his deep affection for the instrument and the music somehow.
I have listened to many versions of this magical sonata and always return to Schiff and Perenyi - a truly transporting experience into serene beauty and emotional ecstasy. Consummate artists - unparalleled!! Thank you for sharing your music with we sad mortals.
When j was nine Years old j heard arpeggione sonata for my very First time. Few Years later j heard Pereny. at Italian television performig Dworak concerto: j remember he was sixteen. Nobody can imagine how j feel happy to listen Maestro Pereny playng Arpeggione. j thank to him in the best way possible.
What is so incredible about this performance is that, along with the beautiful music itself, is that both of these guys radiate serenity. Thank you so much for posting this so many years ago. I'm grateful I got to see and listen to it.
I saw Perenyi on the tram in his hometown, Budapest today. He was carrying his cello as always. He started chatting with two ladies who didn't recognise him. They asked him which orchestra he plays in and whether flute wouldn't have been an easier instrument to play on (they saw the cello was heavy for a man of his age). 😅 He humbly avoided replying to the question whether he plays in an orchestra and kept talking about his childhood in the district he lived in. Before I took off the tram I turned to the ladies and told them they were talking to Maestro Perenyi, one of the biggest cellists of our times. They thanked me for helping them. It was a funny scene! I am glad I could see him again today. 🙂
I have been searching for this musical piece for 30 years! (which is impossible as Im only 25....) ANYWAYS, I first heard this piece as a child and it was my introduction into classical music...had it on an old cassette tape...never knew the name or composer; finally heard it announced on the radio today and voila! Wow...takes a guy back.. the innocence of my boyhood is almost palpable as I listen to this...
Yes good story, I've searched for years and have kept my ears open for classical pieces of music I heard once or twice in the past, way past, and have found them....some not yet
Teldec has an excellent recording of it also with the Eflat major trio, where Schiff, his wife and Perényi plays, unforgettably. Also the Notturno is there. Absolutely the best music to be listened to at the time of emotional crisis. It gets me always cry and it is so purifying.
Of Schubert's music, Arpeggione Sonata seems to be the most beautiful. Of the Arpeggione Sonata plays on You Tube, this one seems to be the best. It is good because there is no embellishment. It is a simple representation of Schubert's pure heart

Eh bien voila! Je vous ai trouvé. Saint-Ternet nous a exaucé! Allelujah! De plus quel choix judicieux que cette délicieuse sonate pour arpeggione du cher Franz. Mes félicitations.

I keep on being drawn back to this superlative performance of a much loved repertoire piece - the chemistry between these two artists is unmistakable and quite beguiling. Long live classical music!
Such exquisite tone, this cellist just floats his bow over the strings, amazing! And Schiff always plays beautifully, truly, but Perenyi is the star here, I think we can agree!
I heard a Schubert trio driving home other day and fell in love with the music immediately.Searching for more of Schubert's music. Listened to several versions of this piece on UA-cam.
