If in 2024 you are still listening to this beautiful piece by Schubert, you are not alone and I love you! Beautiful performance ... they are true artists
It amazes me how musicians can get so absorbed in their playing yet seem like they are out of body and simply enjoy their own playing. All without a note of music in front of them. Two geniuses.
The more I listen to this performance, the more I love it and appreciate the pure, non-histrionic musicianship of Schiff and Perenyi. Although it is they who are making the music, both have their eyes closed most of the time and appear to be listening to it from far away. Breathtaking. Magical.
I saw Perenyi on the tram in his hometown, Budapest today. He was carrying his cello as always. He started chatting with two ladies who didn't recognise him. They asked him which orchestra he plays in and whether flute wouldn't have been an easier instrument to play on (they saw the cello was heavy for a man of his age). 😅 He humbly avoided replying to the question whether he plays in an orchestra and kept talking about his childhood in the district he lived in. Before I took off the tram I turned to the ladies and told them they were talking to Maestro Perenyi, one of the biggest cellists of our times. They thanked me for helping them. It was a funny scene! I am glad I could see him again today. 🙂
Divine piano accompaniment. I love the way Perenyi holds and plays the cello.. as if he is carefully caressing his treasure. shows his deep affection for the instrument and the music somehow.

A humble pianist who ads so much to this great cello sound produced by Miklós Perényi, who plays the cello the way that we understand he wholeheartedly possesses both his instrument and Schubert's music as well. Greatest appreciation!

What strikes me after listening to this for the umpteenth time is how much these two musicians trust each other. Their rapport is perfect. I think part of this closeness may be that both were born and grew up in Hungary. Just a thought.
Such exquisite tone, this cellist just floats his bow over the strings, amazing! And Schiff always plays beautifully, truly, but Perenyi is the star here, I think we can agree!
I dont remember having seen chamber music, even a duo, played by heart by all interpreters. Astonishing interpretation of breath taking depth and beauty.
Luiz Carlos Sette When I had the privilege of studying with Rudolph Kolisch(The Left-handed violinist from..Austria?) at the New England Conservatory years ago, he expected us to memorize the music. Luiz Carlos Sette not really chamber music, it's a cello sonata. but still uncommon to see a cello sonata played without music. it does happen frequently though
David Finckel ( former cellist for the Emerson quartet) often performs duos with Wu Han, and I have only ever seen him perform without a score. It is indeed special. Do try and catch one of their performances if you can.
I play the piano (badly) and cello, and while I definitely cant play the piano part, I can play the score on a cello. The sound Perenyi evokes from his cello is unreal. Two great musicians in an extraordinary cooperation! And the accompanying pianist, Sir Andras Schiff, also plays by heart. Both dedicated to the spirit of the composer.
as school kids in the "terrible socialist era" we were spoiled with concerts given by Perényi and other wonderful musicians in the middle of school day. He has a wonder sister, Eszter, who is a violinist (also her son).
I heard a Schubert trio driving home other day and fell in love with the music immediately.Searching for more of Schubert's music. Listened to several versions of this piece on UA-cam. This pair of artists are my favorite. So beautiful! Thanks for posting their playing, so I can become their fan! The cello is sublime and the piano blends smoothly without being overpowering. Lovely!
once, a few years ago I noticed a guy on the tram carrying a cello and nose deep in a handful of sheets that turned out to be musical tabs. when he looked up to check at which station we are, I realized it's Perényi :)
Which city? My hometown also has trams, that's why I ask. there is something soooo cool and romantick about trams, I'm not sure what, but I love them. :)
this piece of Shubert explained what a lonesome and feeling of expectation life is..... so pretty piano and meaningful cello playing... He is a genius !
Wonderful! I guess that I can feel the distance between the good and the best. Sometime I think the cello music written by Schubert is coming from the very deep of his soul. Its quality is one of the best. Especially the music played by musicians who understand and enjoy the Schubert cello so well. Like these two. Both cello and piano are excellent. Thanks. 谢谢!
I seem to remember that, when he received his knighthood, Andreas Schiff had grey hair already. This recording must have been fourty years ago, so as a comment on this particular beautiful performance, he title was Herr or Mr. not 'Sir'. So many of the Schiff UA-cam items are from very recent years where Schiff's touch has changed; here it is just pure, youthful, natural, sweet, musical, delightful, impeccable. Now it remains nearly all of these things except youthful, and instead of natural, wonderfully organised.
Magnificent! How many hours of work went into the seemingly light and easy playing style of both musicians! I have listened to this piece performed by many musicians and this is the best I've heard. Such a pleasure. Thank you!
This is a masterpiece. Andras, so relaxed and almost as a person sitting in the audience, and Perenyi so absorbed into the melody. Done effortlessly and humbly. The videography was superb. Such a wonderful setting too.
