The Future of Autonomous Vehicles in America - US Senate Hearing

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee held a hearing to examine how transportation infrastructure needs would evolve with the development of autonomous vehicles. Witnesses included state and local transportation officials as well as researchers working on autonomous vehicle development. They discussed the challenges adding autonomous vehicles to American roads would present for infrastructure planning as well as potential solutions for those problems. June 13th, 2018

Federal law has always been reactive not proactive. Currently, we have the ability to make our own cars "self-driving." Information will only become more and more available thus making it easier and easier to "bypass" the government's "guidelines."

The cyber-security issue is easy. Leave ultimate control of the car solely in the hands of the on-board AI chip. The only inbound data should be information or suggestion from an external AI. You could even build in a fail-safe chip. It runs exactly the same as the main chip but if the main chip ever disagrees with it, it overrides and pulls the power on the antenna and the main chip instantaneously. Once it is free of passengers - the fail-safe AI making all of the decisions - it returns for maintenance. You could also program the fleet to establish a P2P network in the event of a wide-spread cyber attack so that traffic could continue at a reduced speed. Everyone running on their fail-safe chips.

It's so painful to listen to Senators, they can barely string together a coherent thought. Go listen to something from Richard Feynman and then come back and listen to these Senators, you'll get auditory whiplash.

But no system is nor can be fully secure. Disaster will happen still. Hacks are still possible
