    I had a strange experience. The rear suspensions on my Super Meteor broke. Literally broke into two pieces. Many suspects, some learning, who's responsible? Jury is still out - let's figure in the comments.
    I'm just a consumer here, trying to find out WHAT exactly led to this. Any experts, engineers - please do chime in.

    To sum up this topic for everone who is looking for a saddle stay and is now unsure:
    1) it seems that the Zana saddle stay restricted the movement of the upper suspension (light grey cap) which led to unintended forces breaking the suspension rod.
    2) if you have an other model check if it is as close to the shock as the Zana one - if not, everthing should be okay and this is probably the reason, that there are no incidents with other saddle stays mounted to this bolt.
    3) generally, the mounting of saddle stays on the upper suspension bolt shouldn't be a problem if the bolt is mounted with the correct torque. The load forces of the saddle stay are rather small compared to the suspension operating forces. So there should be plenty of safety margin. The bolt and surface (frame) under the bolt head, are not moving parts, so the (moving) suspension shouldn't be affected by it. This mounting concept on the upper suspension bolt is also used by the original royal enfield saddle stay on the interceptor. You can look it up on their website for the interceptor accessories. So it should not be a no-go, to mount there something and therefore I decided to buy a saddle stay (not the Zana) which mounts to this bolt but with enough clearance to the suspension.

    • @autorevvv
      @autorevvv  2 місяці тому +1

      This is a super summarization, thanks so much! I do see the level of torque on the mount as a potential reason for the suspension rod to break. Having said that, isn't it just safer to have a saddle stay that does NOT mount on the suspension at all?! There's options available that mount on the chassis hole (specifically designed to hold panniers) or the fender itself - two mounting points on either side. Thanks again! and do consider subbing! :-)

      @@autorevvv the bolt tightening torque and everything which is "clamped" by the bolt, does not introduce any torque on the suspension itself, because the suspension bolt hole has rotational freedom around the bolt. Same function as a ball bearing, which can not transfer torque. If this would not be the case, the suspension would always break even without saddle stay. When the swing arm moves up and down, the distance of the two suspension mounting points increases / decreases which compresses the suspension but always along the rod axis...all the forces which are not parallel to the axis of the suspension rod, only rotate the suspension around the mounting bolts but introduce no "bending load" on the suspension rod as you would need to hold it at least on one side against rotation to create a reaction load (newtons action and reaction law)...if you restrict this rotation (contact between saddle stay and upper suspension housing) you get the necessary reaction loads which cause a bending stress on the rod which it is not designed for. It has high strength against compressive or tensile loads but it is weak against bending loads. Like if you try to compress a pencil along the axis (not possible by hand) but bending it and breaking it is very easy. So bolt torque is only relevant for the bolt itself as long as the rotation of the suspension is not restricted. If the saddle stay introduces enough force that the bolt is damaged by shear stress, than it would be unsafe to mount there something...but the saddle stay loads are tiny compared to operational forces. (~few kg in the saddle bag compared to the max allowable load like rider, pillion and extra allowes luggage weight).
      I hope this explanation helps. But in the end you are still somehow right that if you leave this bolt alone, there will not be an issue there... I am just trying to say that when someone finds a cool saddle stay which mounts to this suspension bolt, it is wrong to say this is super unsafe and he/she should not buy it.... As long as it has not the same design flaw as the discusses one it should be okay - otherwise Royal enfield wouldn`t do it on the interceptor.
      Best Regards. :)

    • @gertk9633
      @gertk9633 2 місяці тому +1

      And what I forgot to say is: do not tighten the bolt by hand without the right tool - if you overtorque it, you either damage the bolt or might "squeeze" the frame (it is a rather thin sheetmetal) into contact with the suspension, which again restricts the rotation and leads to the same issue as with the saddle stay. So be careful and check the mounting manual.

      @@gertk9633 Thanks for the explanation mate! And you're right, if there's a good / safe and sturdy stay which mounts on the suspension, one can atleast can go for it and be cautious about the steps you've mentioned. Pinning this comment thread!

    A very well presented video and nicely worded too. Please accept my compliments. I am a proud owner of SM650 Celestial for almost a year having clocked 9000+ kms. My Red Bull has been to Ladakh and Gurez amongst other places, that too, Solo. No issues till date. Going with stock brake pads and chain set so far.....! All accessories fitted are genuine RE. Nothing aftermarket. Fellow Riders with decked-up bikes with after market fitments/accessories have been facing one or the other problem on a regular basis. I have by choice avoided extra lights, panniers/saddle bags and opted for a Guardian Gears 70L Tail Bag which has been a boon for me.

After market accessories are not worth the frustration these issues bring. But I do already have a few custom bits and I’ll see how times go and then decide next steps. Btw I have the guardian gears saddle bags too - Mustang 50L and they seem pretty solid. Thanks again and lovely to have connected ☺️

    1. Zana should recall the saddle stay in question and replace them free of cost.
    2. RE should ensure that all components /parts, maintenance kit & accessories are released simultaneously at the lauch of new bikes.
    During 1st serving of my RE SM650 only oil change & air filter cleaning were done due to non-availability of maintenance kit viz head gasket & air filter.

    Hi there. Just looking at your photos of the broken end of the shaft, as a Metallurgist, I can see that there a distinct signs of metal fatigue that's been happens for a while. Then the final break, where the metal was quite thin by the time you hit the large pothole. As I can't see them closely and live, or conduct any test, however, I suspect that there may have been a fault in the shaft and the metal fatigue propagated from there until it finally let go, maybe exasperated by the stay.
    I have a Super meteor and recently replaced the shocks with YSS performance shocks, which made a huge difference to the ride. Anyhow, I glad you are OK and the issue is sorted by RE. Ride well. Cheers

    • @autorevvv
      @autorevvv  26 днів тому

      Hello, very helpful insights there and quite possibly the reason why this happened. I've too checked out the YSS shocks for the SM and was planning to get them after my stock setup runs out for another 10k kms. Is the ride quality less bumpy now at the rear? and does it affect handling by any chance? I take my SM on a lot of twisties here in India and enjoy leaning it in corners as much as a cruiser can lean :-D and with stock suspensions it handles very well. Let me know what your experience has been w.r.t handling / mild cornering.

    I went out and looked at my Super Meteor and discovered that the saddle stays where they attached to the top of the shocks are in contact with the shocks. This could prevent the movement of the shocks forcing the rod in the center of the shocks to bind instead of moving freely. I used a die grinder to remove all the meatal that was in contact with the top of the shocks. I put a small amount of paint on the top of the shocks. If there is stay metal to shock metal contact the paint should get scratched. If it gets scratched, I will remove more metal.

    • @autorevvv

      THAT there is another reason to avoid saddle stays. The intrusion on the bolts with the suspensions itself is a big concern

    Very similar thing happened to me -
    The front alloy on my Super Meteor 650 cracked after going over a broken brick at 50-60 kmph, just two days after taking delivery.
    The RE guys were shocked as they had never seen this on a Super Meteor, and after some back and forth and a strict Mail to RE, I got a so called "goodwill warranty"

    very informative video . I still didn't get the exact reason .
    can you suggest that is the same logic applicable on auto engine racks as I have recently purchased them

    • @autorevvv
      @autorevvv  Місяць тому

      Thanks mate, glad you found this useful. The exact reason is still unknown. Possible explanations are:
      1) My Zana saddle stays were mounted on the suspensions (on the inside) with other 2 mounting points on fender and chassis. Moving and still parts wearing could have resulted in this. Fact that there are a few more people with Zana saddle stay have reported the same in the comments here could mean it's a specific ZANA issue.
      2) The torque used to mount the saddle stay on the suspensions could have caused this. Tighter the mounting, more chances of it affecting the movement of the suspensions
      3) Bolting the saddle stay on the inside of suspension joint (this is what the RE guys told me) caused this. Whereas bolting on the outside of the suspensions - how your Autoengina mounts will not have the same risk. But I've heard from other experts in my group that it doesn't matter if its mounted on the inside or outside
      So, my take away was - don't get a stay that mounts on the suspensions at all, why take the risk?! So i picked the LCB which mounts on the chassis and fender. You take a judgement call basis all the presented facts / opinions.
      Hope this helped.!

    Hello from a fellow SM 650 rider from Pune, also from your video I reckoned that we have probably crossed path during the anniversary ride as I too had the reporting in point near BBC, Baner. Was sad to see the ordeal you faced and completely agree with the rear suspension issue that most of us SM650 users are facing. While the logic of static pannier mounted on moving suspension head seems probable but still in no way the snapping of suspension rod is acceptable. Are there no precedence of such mounts and if there are , are all of them breaking apart😮.
    RE should really think hard on their SM650 portfolio !!

    • @autorevvv
      @autorevvv  2 місяці тому

      Hey there oh yes we would have probably crossed paths that day!! So while uploading I thought I was the only one whose suspension broke. I found 2 other in the comment section who had a similar incident, both cases had Zana saddle stay mounted on shocks. While most saddle stays are mounted at the same spot, it seems it’s Zana’s stays that are causing this. But equally confused then why would others not break. Regardless, saddle stay or not, suspension snapping in two is very strange and I was lucky to not have been doing triple digit speeds at the time. Anyway, let’s catch up on a ride sometime!! The wound and the ointment is the same for us bikers 🥹😃

    Hi from Idaho Falls Idaho USA. I don't have the Zana racks I have a different brand that says Royal Enfield on the bags. They hook on to the outside of the shocks just like the Zana ones. Hear are my questions for you. 1. When your shocks broke did the bolt that holds the shock on the top brake? 2 Did the metal around the bolt attached to the frame of the bike or any of the weld's brake? 4 How much weight was on your racks when the shocks failed? 3 Have you noticed more, less, or no difference in movement of the top of the shocks now that its back in stock configuration?
    In my opinion Royal Enfield is trying to pass the buck. If there is no difference in the movement at the top of the shock with or without the staddle stay in place, then you can rule out over torquing of bolt due to the saddle stay being the cause of the failure. If the bolt was not broken, then you can also rule out over torquing and weight placed on the bolt being the cause. Most saddle stays on the market attach in the same way as the Zana ones. If the bolt did not fail, and the welds that hold the shock to the top of the bike did not fail then the shock failed due to manufacturing defect. The act of going over a big bump may have been the cause not the saddle rack.
    The only reason I could think that the sadle stays would have caused this would be if they restrict the movement of the shock in its mount Unless the bolts broke. If the bolts broke, then you could blame the extra weight of the stays.

    • @autorevvv
      @autorevvv  3 місяці тому +2

      Hey mate, thanks for stopping by. Shock mount bolts did not break. Welds did not break. The cartridge inside the suspensions broke and the black cowl over the suspensions came off. The silver part remained attached to the chassis. No weight on the saddle stays when this happened. No saddle bags / panniers. I was riding solo with just a backpack. That only leaves to manufacturing defect as per your post. So it could be that. But I dont think the actual incident of hitting the bump caused this, some wear/tear was building over time and hitting the bump was just the breaking point. Either way - RE should be held accountable to a large extent.

    I haven't had good experience with the service center guys or even the engineers for SM650 from RE. My SM keeps going left when I leave the handlebar while riding. They kept my bike for 3-4 days and finally said it was because of the aftermarket backrest I had installed, which is again, Zana. Even when I told them that it was like this from day 1. They sent my back after removing the backrest, with the problem still being there. So for any problem, their first reaction is to put it on the aftermarket accessory. So I doubt that led to your suspension issue as well.

    • @autorevvv
      @autorevvv  3 місяці тому

      I swear my Thunderbird had this same issue of steering misalignment. Never could get fixed by RE, eventually I learnt to live with it. Your Zana backrest causing steering issue is too much, I can;t imagine how backrest could affect that, They are clearly bullshitting. In my case, I do think maybe RE could be right because this saddle stay was bolted right on the suspensions...So yeah but I totally agree with you on RE pushing the blame on everything else most times. Ride safe buddy and go see one of those legendary "bullet" mechanics in your area. These guys are sometimes way better RE service guys.

    The only reason I could think of is the angle created which might restrict the linear movement of the shock and putting pressure at the thin point, leading it to break due to a bend angle … and hence the outward break … might be wrong though …

    • @autorevvv
      @autorevvv  3 місяці тому

      That is a NEW line of thought and seems very much a possibility of them breaking. Especially the part where they came off outwards.

    zana fucked up big time, clearly the saddle stays are hitting the top of the shockers. RE official panniers are available now and come with bushes for all the bolts and are a very good fit.

    • @autorevvv
      @autorevvv  Місяць тому

      Yeah doesn’t seem like Zana tested their stays well. RE panniers looks great and fit very well. My only concern is practical usage, the compartments look pretty small to carry decent amount of luggage.

      @sandy30634 Місяць тому +1

      @@autorevvv yes they are small but can carry enough for 3-4 days for the rider, the real pro is that it doesn't effect the riding dynamics because of the light weight, the biggest pro imo is the aesthetics and the rigorous R&D by the company.

    It's a shame that even after 1 year of launch, RE has failed to provide OEM panniers for their flagship vehicle and people have to go to third party brands who are making hell of money by selling cheap products at high prices. Guess, we should make a group of SM 650 owners and protest it in a civilized way so that our request is heard by RE big bosses. Hope you are not facing any issues with Rhino racing exhaust. Saw some users posted videos facing problems with their Gasket, rocker cover for exhausts getting burned or damaged after installing Rhino racing exhausts. I want to go for Rhino racing but still having second thoughts. Please share your feedback regarding the exhausts.

    • @autorevvv
      @autorevvv  2 місяці тому +1

      It really is a shame mate. Not just panniers, they were also supposed to launch a raised touring handlebar. Not come. Part of a group of SM owners, done all kinds of protest against RE, nothing works. They have a templatised response for everything. Rhino Racing exhausts are pretty good. Opt for the old design and insist on stainless steel. Only issue I had was they first delivered a mild steel version which caught rust within weeks. I complained and they shipped a Stainless Steel version at no extra cost. The SS version is fine and the sound output is too good, not very loud but a beautiful bassy rumble.

      To an extent yes! but it seems like this incident was caused by Zana saddle stay interfering with the shocks movement. But it is completely REs fault for not launching genuine accessories soon that’s why people go aftermarket

  • @Preetinder_Ramana_Dhaliwal

    The Zana stays here are the culprit .... they have a manufacturing defect n touch the top of shocker preventing its complete articulation .... Thumpers Caffe Chandigarh tried his best to help me by connecting with Zana chaps for amendments/replacement but no avail .... poor managment and customer service Zana Motor Cycles .... Shame !
    Eventually I had to get it redesigned and move the saddle stay rod connecting to shocker to Chassis.

      Such a beauty beast lost a lot of trust. I own sold my Himalayan within the three months after so many arguments with ASM due to quality of product w.r.t. harness wire, ECU, meter and most important brake and braking calipers which failed many times during long ride and I lost my confidence over Royal Enfield product. I sent mail about the same but everytime faced ASM BLbad attitude as service center helpless to support in this regard without approval from RE ASM.

      Oh yes they have been launched, quite a coincidence, I made this video and within a week I started seeing OEM panniers! :-) Do you like those panniers? I love the design and how they're neatly tucked in to the sides on the SM, BUT - don't seem too practical. Storage space is less, and internal layout isn't great to carry even 3-4 days of luggage. I've seen the video about TB 500 suspensions - looks decent, might get those or YSS ones after I complete 20k kms.. Thanks so much for your comment bro, I love my SM too :-D
