I am from New Zealand, and my ancestors are from Dunedin New Zealand and Paisley Scotland. My father played the pipes in the Royal New Zealand Army Scottish Regiment. I am literally sobbing right now. I miss him so much. Thank you for posting this.
Mike G Mike G 0 seconds ago 2022 - reminiscing. I'm a Kiwi. ex military. Best work friend and I bought 2 tickets nearly 1 yr in advance of this Tattoo. We were both traveling (going walkabouts-like). Three days before finale - friend cant make it to Scotland. What to do? Had best seats in entire show. Center 2 seats, 2 rows below royal box with HRH Prince Charles present. On the night I que with me, myself and I. I approach 1 and all with no scalping - just please someone use the ticket! NOT A CHANCE. LIKE I HAD THE POX! 12 m from the entrance I overhear a bunch of locals saying to one of their own " sorry you cant join us but we'll meet you here ..." March up to them, stand to attention, Country, Name, rank, serial number, and reason why i have 2nd best ticket in town. They take a chance, I share enjoyment of a lifetime, they in return offer a lone Kiwi some local hospitality after the show! I'm an Irish Kiwi - God Bless the Scots.
Being a proud Scot this brings back memories of living just a 10 minutes, if that from the castle as a child we heard most of the pipes anw the different regiments marching their buses
in Denish. det er det mest imponerende jeg nogensinde har set og hørt. der er intet militær instrument der slår sækkepiber og trommer. det er bestemt det fedeste jeg nogen sinde har set.
My grandfather was from Glasgow and he loved the pipes. He never quite lost his accent even well into his 90s. He would have loved this I'm sure. I'm very proud of my Scottish heritage.
My Grandfather also was from Glasgow and Grandmother from Aberdeen; I was around 17 when I could finally understand what he was saying. Our Clan is Leslie. I have been a piper or trying for 62 yrs. and presently to retain our Scottish heritage and legacy, Pipe Major of the Erepa Grotto Pipes and Drums. This has been my favorite Tattoo since that day it occurred. Thank YOU for your post !
Makes this Yank proud of his Scottish heritage. All the way back to County Ayershire and the Dalrymple name. Thanks so much for the thrilling video! Edward Stair-Tennessee USA
Loved this!! I wish I would have had the honor to hear them in person when I went to Scotland...Beautiful place it is I will say that ... Also, Loved the thistle formation...I have gotten a tattoo of the Scottish Thistle because it is such a beautiful flower and it has a great story behind it too :)
+Missy Muffet Thank you for wonderful lovely comments about my country hearing the bagpipes gives me goosebumps and think you getting a thistle tattoo is fantasic where about did you come to scotland from if you dont mind me asking
Fabulous sound, took my dad to see this which he said was 'magical' & he was ex KOSB & was GC at Edinburgh Castle for 2 years. Very powerful and a moving performance.

Absolutely excellent! I had the honour to meet the Black Watch when I was in the German Air Force at Ramstein Airbase in 1983. Can you imagine what fun it was if a Scot tries to learn a German how to play the bagpipe? At first the loughter was on scottish side, at least on both... Something I never forgot.I´m proud that I had this experiance and that I´ve met these extraordinary soldiers.
Greetings from Turkey! What a spectacular show! I can't imagine this music' effect on soldier in battlefield. TBH id march even into hell with those magnificent marches. What a spirit!!! SALUTE brave sons of Scotland!
@vanth77 I'm not even from Gaelic or Celtic descent, at least not as far as I know. But every time I hear so many bagpipes, I just feel the same way as you. This kind o' tune is soo great for hand-to-hand fighting scene of WW1, WW2, and so on. LONG LIVE BRITAIN !! LONG LIVE SCOTLAAAAAAAND !!
amen. this is one of scotland's gifts to the world, and i (non-scottish, but admirer) grateful for it! hurrah for the pipes & drums, and thanks for scotland!
Strange that so many comments posted here have little or nothing to do with the wonderful display of these excellent bandsmen. Great post. Love the "Thistle" formation. Thanks for sharing.
My ancestors where from scottland...my daddy would share some jack and talk about what he knew while we listened to 33 lp's of bagpipes...this is some awesome stuff...I love it !!
I'm an American, and I say Thank God for the Scots! What would we do without them? I have Scottish blood, and I'm so proud of it. What's not to be proud of?
Outstanding!! the guys with the drums with the soft err... sticks for want of a better word with the white ends.... do they have strings on the end so they can twirl them?
I always come back to listen to this video when i need reminded of how proud i am to be Scottish. The sound of the mass pipes sends shivers right through my body and makes me feel ultimate proudness.... It's like a rush ! We really are the proudest nation on earth ! Alba gu brath !!! INDEPENDENCE FOR SCOTLAND !
My wife and I have just returned home after attending the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo which celebrated its 60th year this year and it was well worth going,we were lucky to have seats facing the castle and had a perfect view.It was a wonderful experience and can highly recommend it.Massed pipes and drums, you cant beat them although I think the Royal Marine Band comes a very close second.
The name of the tune, as the announcer says, is literally "The Edinburgh Military Tattoo", composed by Major Gavin Stoddart, MBE, BEM, Senior Pipe Major of the British Army, now retired. It is played from the start to approximately 2:45, after which it segues into a medley of Hot Punch, The Bugle Horn and Bonny Dundee
Music reflecting strength and essence of life itself ! High time, these people stopped dying for Rothschilds ! And most of the time against Christian fellows !
always loved the bagpipes, even i am a Yank. they seem so peaceful and powerful at the same time. And wow all those famous regiments... me being a military history lover i know. right on!!!!
What a tremendous boost to morale it must have been for the brave souls who landed on the beaches on D-Day; to hear the piper playing behind them! Lest we forget!
After getting to the end of the video. Bagpipe bands leave me sitting in awe. I want to get myself a set of bagpipes to add to my songs in the future.... How hard is it to learn to play them? It's took me 6 years to get to a decent level of guitar playing.
"Woow this is so powerful performance. One question though this piper instrument where is this from originally? From every corner of UK people use this in all kinds of events is it scottish or irish or english or welsh?" Egypt. Brooklyn Rules!
It is good that they explain who are involved in the procession...I love the pipers and it is good to see all regiments involved from both the UK and NZ.. I love watching this on TV as it is a little too far and too expensive for me to go to Edinburgh but one day I will get there..Tradition is Tradition no matter what country you come from. I'm from European heritage and this is just awesome...
Can anyone tell me what the opening March music is called???????? the whole piece is fantastic, but I find the opening march brilliant, and think it would strike fear into any enemy listening to it get louder as the opposing army grew nearer. God bless ALL our armed forces fighting for the stability of this OUR United Kingdom & British Commonwealth!
What song is that they play at the end, the one with the KILLER drum solo around 7 - 8 minutes in? AWESOME, if there is a better bagpipe video on youtube lemme know, so far this takes the cake!
The Moment i hear the Pipes, every single Inch of my Skin gets Goosebumps . This is so great ! Im from Germany, but i feel like i had a Life before this 1 and it must have been in Scottland. This Music touches me really deep inside, every single Time i hear it .
I am english and i would march into battle anywhere with that band and music ringing in my ears ! makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end thank you for posting !
@LucidDream101 You might be better googling massed pipe band music if that's what you want to do. These narrated videos are taken from the TV versions that we see after the event. Glad you enjoy our national music as much as we do. MInd you, my son used to live in a flat close to the castle and was glad to move due to the constant noise while this and the Edinburgh festival is on!! :)
does anyone know the full tune listing?? i know bonnie dundee, itchy fingers and the bugel horn but dont know any of the others and wouldnt mind trying to learn them
@memmotronic1 For your information, the narrator is Tom Fleming, a Scottish actor born and bred in Edinburgh. He narrated for the Tattoo for about 40 years up until 2008.
@passie29 actually it was that a British officer asked for volunteer's to be parachuted from a plane into Normandy i think, half the group of Gurkha's stepped forward, the other half complained because there wasn't enough parachutes for all of them to go :) now thats Gurkha's for ya!
quick question could anyone tell me what song they were playing when they came out. im a drum major and want my band to play that song its really catchy
