    The best career advice that I learned is don’t ever attach your-self to a PERSON, a place, a company, an organization or a project. Only Attach your-self to your mission in life and your PURPOSE. That’s how you keep your power and keep your peace!

    Just give your kids lots of love. Give hugs when asked. Offer hugs whenever you see they are upset. Don't promise unless you know you can deliver. If you can't, apologize and explain why. These simple acts of kindness and love can do wonders to any children include those who cannot delay gratification. Sometimes science search for something that is already known, just to add a few data points in their experiments without really changing the results.

    I was the youngest of 3 boys. We did not grow up with much means. I recall countless times, we’d get a treat, like a Kit Kat or a Twix bar. I’d slowly eat 1 Twix bar and save the other, my brothers would inhale there whole candy bar then pick on me and try, sometimes achieving stealing my saved half. Needless to say, one is a drug addict and the other buys and lives way beyond his means and has made many poor decisions in his adult life, setting him back for the years to come.

    I know I am commenting on a year old video, which in itself is reporting on a 60 year old experiment, however, I have often wondered about little nuances that may have gone unnoticed in the children and so, not recorded, and therefor not researched in later visits. For instance:
    - if the child ate the marshmallow, but lied about it saying someone else came into the room and ate it -- was later found to be a pathological lair.
    - if the child ate the marshmallow, but lied about it saying that the adult didn't leave one in the first place -- was later found to have short-term memory issues.
    - if the child wanted to negotiate with the adult regarding exactly how long they had to wait and if they waited longer could they get 3 marshmallows -- later became a politician
    - if the child argued with the adult about getting the second marshmallow up front and then do the waiting afterwards -- later became a used car salesman.
    - if the child put the marshmallow in her pocket, but then wanted to argue the point that she had not eaten it, so now she deserved 2 more marshmallow -- was later found to be my ex-wife.
    ...the list is endless

    It's funny, I showed my daughter a video on the Marshmellow Test when she was 6 years old. It didn't mention any possible errors. But all the same, she just took it as true and applied it. Now, she's top of her class, works to make and save her own money, while making time for friends and computer. She just accepted it as true and integrated patience and hard work in her value system.

    I think recent tests trying to debunk the Marshmallow Test are in themselves flawed. For example, a parent who is aware of the test is going to try and adjust their parenting. Most college educated people are required to take psych 101, and learn about this test. It also doesn't account for societal differences between now and then, after 50 years. If I weren't aware of the marshmallow test, I probably wouldn't have stressed patience/delayed gratification and rewarded it when raising my kids, and I'm sure they would be worse off for it.

  • @andymanaus1077
    @andymanaus1077 2 роки тому +11

    The experiment hasn't been debunked. It has merely been explained more deeply. The marshmallow test could only examine a single point in time of a child's development and compare it to later single-point development. It is informative and useful to see the reasons why children's momentary impulses were gratified or not, but that doesn't disprove the test.
    The next step of explaining why a strong impulse control exists or not, helps us to develop a childhood environment that promotes a child's impulse control, thereby giving him or her the power to give up immediate gratification in return for long term success and even freedom from addictions. But that was not in the scope of the original test. Without the marchmallow test, the subsequent tests and examinations could never have been performed. You have to start somewhere.

      how do i switch to being able to have delayed gratification

    • @andymanaus1077
      @andymanaus1077 2 роки тому +2

      @@girlbossincorporated I struggled with this for a long time myself. I have found that having strong and well-defined financial goals makes it easier to resist impulsive purchases. It might help to put photos of your goals in places you will see them every day. When you are tempted to spend money, imagine that spending that money will make your real goals move further away from you. (That actually IS what is happening, you just need to strongly visualise it!)
      Coincidentally, in a couple of weeks I'm paying cash for the first property purchase I've made in 25 years. So yeah, no matter how much you earn, it works if you create a determined mindset.
      Making a conscious decision to look for ways to NOT spend money can become a habit and can be fun. But you have to really want to make it happen.
      Build some "fences" to protect your money from impulse buying. For example, some of these things that might help:
      1. "A dollar saved is a dollar earned" is an old saying but it is false. Every time you are tempted to spend, remember that "every dollar you don't spend is actually equal to two dollars earned". This is because visible and hidden taxes take at least half of your income. So when you are tempted, remember that that $6 coffee actually costs you $12. Ouch!
      2. Say you manage to save $5,000. Something you "want" costs $1000. That is a whopping 20% of your savings! Remember how hard it was to save that money? Ask if you REALLY want to give up 20% of your savings to have it.
      3. Buy now, pay later schemes should be avoided at all costs. Even if there isn't an apparent cost to you, the costs are hidden in the price. More importantly, "buy now, pay later" schemes encourage you to spend money you don't have, often on things you don't really need. Then the bill comes in and you get caught in a debt spiral. This is a deadly financial trap.
      4. Have two bank accounts. Keep enough money in one to pay the bills and for spending. Put any money that you don't need for essentials in the other account and cut up the card to that account so you have to make a real effort to get to your money. You don't have to give up luxuries completely, you just have to decide which luxuries are worth the cost.
      5. Avoid places that tempt you to spend money unnecessarily. This might be eBay, a club with poker machines, stores, fast food joints... You will know the places you are most easily tempted.
      6. Get rid of credit cards. They are the worst trap for anyone (myself included) who has impulse control difficulties. If you have a credit card debt, talk to the bank about getting the balance/s transferred into a personal loan with lower interest rate, a fixed repayment amount and no withdraw facility.
      7. Look for places that sell cheap essentials like groceries and clothing. The savings you make can turbocharge your saving for those major goals that you want to achieve.
      8. Learn how stores psychologically manipulate you to spend your hard-earned money. UA-cam has heaps of videos on this topic. Realising the tricks they use will help you to resist them.
      Anyhow, I hope some of this helps. Using these methods has helped me to change my spending habits and put my finances into a much better condition. The most important thing is being willing and determined to make real changes. You really gotta want it for it to happen.

    what if the kids have easy access to marshmallows or they don't like them so much, so as to be motivated to take another one? I agree on the connection btw capacity to postpone gratification and discipline and success. But it highly depend on what motivates one. I hope when doing the test they used other items as well, depending on the interest of each subject. Otherwise the test cannot be relevant.Besides, there are some people who postpone gratification just from a sense of scarcity. They don't like marshmallons, but having more somehow makes them feeling secure. They probably will wait until they get 20 marshmallows and then keep them until they are not good anymore.

    This test assumes healthy parenting. It doesn’t account for children whom make decisions out of fear not self-control. A child can delay eating the marshmallow will probably delay eating two more out of fear of what the parent will say. And if the parent is reporting 10 years later the parent might lie. The child might be in horrible situation but not based on their own self control but abuse in the home.

      I'm 52 years old and my best friend from childhood is 3 days older than me. We were both raised in old fashion households where children were expected to do heavy shores and spankings were common. But while I remember my parents with love and understand they raised me the only way they knew how my best friend resents his father to this day and feels he was very abusive towards him. The same input can have very different effects on humans. The mystery is to know where do resilience and self control come from.

The correlation does not explain whether they ate the marshmellow because of the experiences of being poor, or whether their family is poor because their mom is a marshmellow eater and they picked up her vices. Your rationality that poor people are driven to consume doesn't make any sense because conserving the few things you have for later would also be a good survival strategy. I disagree the comments that children have poorer self control because of lower social economic status because candies are very inexpensive. Children learn from what they observe from their family members and peers along with certain hereditary factors in personality traits.

    It's disgusting that you are still spreading this BS. The study was debunked, it shows nothing. You mention the debunking, but go on to assume the results are valid: they are not.
