- How can one afford to buy health insurance after you quit your job? I quit my job 3 years ago and I survived! I was able to purchase health insurance and there are various discounts you can receive based on your income. Of course, when you quit, the insurance will likely be no where as cheap as buying it through your employer because they offer a low health insurance cost as a perk to you. In California, you have a health portal at coveredca.com which you can preview how much health insurance would cost if you just up and leave your current job. Yes... say goodbye to your boss forever! Keep in mind I'm not getting some random low coverage insurance but rather from Kaiser or Blue Shield of California.

It’s irritating when you see United Healthcare is going to post record profits this quarter since people aren’t going to checkups due to Covid. Shouldn’t we see a refund in our premiums?
I don't understand how a company that helps provide healthcare is even listed as a publicly traded company...? Shouldn't this be illegal? Are they working for the customer or the investors checkbook?

We need Medicare-For-All/A single payer healthcare system here in the United States, especially during this time with the Coronavirus pandemic! What is more "Pro-Life" than ensuring that every person in America has guaranteed affordable healthcare regardless of their job or social status? Also, if we all had access to basic healthcare, we would all have the "freedom" to live long lives and rarely have to worry about medical bankruptcies. Sure, taxes will go up, but the overall cost will go down so much that everyone will be paying less and saving thousands of dollars every year. Furthermore, if some of us need additional healthcare than Medicare, then we have the "choice" to get additional insurance, but for others Medicare would be more than enough. Finally, if every other developed country (Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand) can implement this system and save money, then why can't the United States do the same and help "Make America Great Again" for everybody at least on the issue of healthcare? Oh, and if American citizens die from lacking access to affordable health insurance because the Republicans believe that the government shouldn't provide it then we are failing our country's promise of defending "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" for its citizens as well as "promoting the general welfare" of all the people.
Why would they do that, when they can squeeze every penny out of every single American?
Americans wanted capitalism; here you go. Greedy healthcare companies making shareholders happy, large corporations taking over ... it’s all to make more billionaires.

I have guaranteed lifetime employer paid healthcare in retirement with minimum 10 years of employment with them - major golden handcuffs. This is a huge benefit.

When I was an independent contractor, I was shelling out $1800/month for health insurance for a family of four. Let that sink in. $1800-a-month! Fortunately, the contract paid well so it was worth it. And, yes, there are cheaper options via Bronze or Silver plans but, for our family needs, a Gold plan made more sense. As BTB mentioned, California has subsidies if you are in a lower income bracket and we also have Medi-Cal (aka Medicaid or free government insurance) for those in the lowest income brackets.
$1800 is more than what I spend in a month. OMG

Man i also live in CA. I am 53 yo and i just quit my job on May 2021 because i hated it. The only reason i stayed there because of the health insurance but i am so done with job. My health insurance with HealNet now is $515 a month with 70% Silver Coverage. It sucks but i need to be safe than sorry. This country's health insurance is rediculous, the worst ive seen because of the cost. I agree with you 100%, it is worth it even it is costly because i am free what i want to do. I am day trading stocks now and so far, i am doing fine. Thanks for your video because it validates that i made a good decision.

Another option that some may want to consider looking into are companies like Christian Healthcare Ministries or Medishare. The premiums are low and go directly toward members medical bills, not bloated salaries. CHM takes care of all medical events over $500 at 100% (no deductible). I know so many people (especially small business owners) who have had it for years and love it.

Single mom here 1099 make 32k b4 taxes and government kick me out of Tenncare cuz I “make too much to qualify.” Got few insurance quotes for me & my then 3 yrs old son it’s all btw $850-1100 per month. We have been out in the cold for 3 years without any coverage.

Have you ever considered doing a breakeven cost analysis comparing the cost (risk) of an out-of-pocket catastrophic event versus the annual health insurance premium including the deductible for that event? I've often wondered what the itemized cost for a corrective procedure or treatment would be out-of-pocket versus the cost of carrying an annual health insurance premium.
I realize that not carrying health insurance is kinda like rolling the dice but the insurance is getting so expensive that it may be approaching a break-even point in just paying out-of-pocket in the event of a catastrophic health care event.
Don’t spend your HSA on healthcare. Pay out of pocket so you preserve your tax exempt money

I use Sidecar health for $1300 every 3 months for a family. It’s not considered health insurance, but it’s a great option for people who usually only go to the doctor for check ups and want some protection for any emergencies.

The cheapest insurance for my wife and I is $700/mo, and that’s with a $11k/yr deductible. Even if you just visit the doctor a couple times a year for minor stuff, that’s a few thousand more out of pocket. We could move to Thailand and live off that amount and also get better medical care. It really is some crazy system we have here. A friend of mine says it’s not health insurance, it’s wealth insurance, which is basically how I think of it now. It’s the insurance cost you have to pay to live in the US similar to how you can get kidnapping insurance or something.
I live in Chiang Mai. Thai Health Insurance for a foreigner like myself(55 to 60) is about $2000 per year(no monthly premiums allowed). Yes you pay it all at once,. “The Grass is not always greener on the other side”.

I recommend finding ways to leave the system and establish multiple forms of income for yourself (even if you have to transition into it). I recommend watching YouAreFree TV and Infinite Waters Diving Deep for good information and inspiration.
You can join the reserves in the military too. You get super cheap Tricare Health Insurance and you only drill once a month for two or three days at a job. It's an ultra part-time job, and you even get paid for it AND a pension.
Only works if you're under 42.

Beat the bush. I been offered a job in Jeffersonvill Indiana which business is growing and amazaon fulfillment center there. I made friends there which the weather is only issue. A house cost $150,000 compared to my home in Southern California. I am afraid of taking that risk. Downey California

I remember working right out of college as a contractor and was furious how much I had to pay covered California, when I was green and not making much. Trying to save money was difficult bc the premiums was insanely expensive.
What you really need to talk about is the insurance we had before the ACA.When people were filling for bankruptcy.

What u showed on the screen is comparable around all the states that i came across.
A while back, I got the best plan in my state and they paid none of my medical expenses. Now my state has only one plan and no doctor in my area will take it. If it weren’t for the ACA I wouldn’t be able to get health insurance because I had a rare (but resolved!) complication of an appendectomy. Even though I was healthy I was deemed “uninsurable” just prior to the implementation of the ACA. So while I am glad we have some aspects of the ACA, currently in my state it’s not so great. Certainly our healthcare system needs to change!
These laws can really screw some people and sentence them to death basically.

Good video, health insurance is always a big deal, especially for people with 3-4 family members. I got the best plan (100% coverage, include eyes, dental ) for free, 20K saving each year, keeping my job is worth it for me at least.

Very nice. I am thankful that I have insurance through employer, and continue that even though I'm medically retired. The healthcare game is expensive. Health insurance is only about half of what the expense is. People going to doctors, then seeking second opinion, then seeking a specialist, then specialist prescribes treatment/medicines. Pharmacy Benefits managers get a cut, and hospitals get a cut, and other people. You probably don't want to go seek healthcare over in Hong Kong.

Great information on Insurance. I live in Thailand but am a resident of Florida. Even though Healthcare is super cheap in Thailand I still get ACA health insurance just in case I need to go back to the USA and in case ACA goes away some day. I am hoping I am grandfathered in if it eliminated. Florida is definitely cheaper than CA for ACA health insurance. I like ACA bt the runaway costs need to be addressed. I personally don't believe killing ACA and starting over is the safest option.

Insurance tries to cover everything, even the simple things like a bandage on a cut. There's too much insurance. Health "professionals" charge maximum since insurance will tend pay.
I travel to Vietnam to live. I can get a annual healthcare plan that covers everything for $600 per year

@@BeatTheBush Actually paying cash should be cheaper. Then then don't have to submit all the insurance paperwork. Admin costs are high.
In my experience, paying cash has not been cheaper. My insurance has apparently negotiated significant discounts.
i felt odd complaining to kaiser recently that i was paying good money to put up with their recent limitation on appointments due to covid which felt like pretext. hospitals should be more open during pandemic and not be closed. i asked for refund on co pay

Obamacare is really expensive a 63 year old relative of mine lost their job and after decades of high stress/long hours really did not want to find another job. This relative had over a million dollars saved so you would think early retirement would be no problem right? They would have had to pay $ 1,800 a month which was too much even for them and they had to seriously consider going without insurance, getting the most stripped down version of Obamacare or only withrdrawing 40K a year from their savings/getting a subsidy. 40k a year would have been a hardship they had been making 100 to 150k at their job. I understand having to pay my own insurance but when costs are this unreasonable it puts fire out of reach for all but the wealthiest. You were very lucky to only be paying $300 to $700 a month.
I'm kinda lucky I guess,maybe, perhaps. I retired a 5 months ago after 33 years and was able to continue getting health insurance with my employer for just under 4300.00 a year and have a 4800.00 deductible though preventable care is free as long as it stays within the guidelines. I still have about 3 more years till I can get medicare. I have diabetes so it would cost a lot more to go out into the market place. Over all I consider myself lucky to have worked at a great employer. I hear people say this all the time that the people they worked with where great it was their boss that weren't. LOL for me I had some of the greatest boss over the years and with most of them we are still friends and keep in contact and that goes from lower management on up.

Healthcare is literally the only reason why i have stayed at such a crappy job for 7 years. My coverage for my wife and I per month is $168. After 7 years of this i am ready to quick but unfortunately cant because her works coverage is$400+ per month. Not to be exaggerative but I feel trapped and honestly feel like being dead would be easier.

Just keep your annual income below poverty rate while retired to get on medicaid. Your income is tested, not wealth.

And some foreigners I met tried a long time, when I saw their CV and motivation letters they were crap, so no surprise they were never selected. I rewrote CV and made some calls and they all got a job. Salaries are pretty high here and social security system is much better than US too.

Starting in tax year 2019, there is no penalty for not having health coverage. But you risk paying a lot more if anything happens.
BeatTheBush let’s say you don’t have health insurance. You later find out you have diabetes..couldn’t you get health insurance afterward? There is no pre condition. You might get into a car accident but you can increase your auto liability for that. This sounds like you are taking advantage of the system for a healthy adult but it does make financial sense.

Auto liability insurance pays the other person when you are in an accident, it doesn't pay you. Accidents are not the only expensive thing that can suddenly happen to a person, I used to work in a hospital and most people were not there for accidents. Examples... a person in their early 30s and got a collapsed lung after working out in the gym...they had no prior health issues, another got a pulmonary embolism, also in their 30's, and there was a person in their 20s that had a stroke. I had a friend who had a boating accident while on vacation that caused significant brain damage, they didn't have insurance and lost everything (house, car, all savings). Hospital bills are big if one is admitted. Medical debt is a major cause of bankruptcy. If someone has no money and is living off the government programs anyway, then it doesn't matter. Everyone else should have medical insurance.
Zeric E No, that is not correct. You can buy liability for medical care for yourself and passengers. And of course there is unexpected risk to going without health insurance.

From *Nationwide Insurance* _"Auto liability insurance coverage helps cover the costs of the other driver’s property and bodily injuries if you’re found at fault in an accident."_ And from *Allstate* _"if you are liable for the accident - liability coverage helps pay for the other person's expenses."_ and from *Progressive* _"...instead of paying out of pocket to cover another person’s medical bills or repair their car, your insurance steps in to pay for some or all of the injured party’s expenses"_ The definition will be the same for all companies operating in the United States. What you may be thinking of is Auto "Medical Coverage" which does pay a small amount for injuries you may sustain, in the case of a major injury, it's not going to do much as the limits are typically just a few thousand dollars and a major accident will result in expenses that far exceed the limits. *Feel free to call your own insurance carrier so they can explain it to you.*
You said at the end you spend 400 dollars then right after that you said you spend about 1500 a month. Are you spending 1500 dollars a month just for your own medical insurance?

My dad didn't quit his job he lost it due to covid so now he has no health insurance he can't afford it and when I signed him up to covered CA they reply saying he wasn't eligible because his income was very low (unemployment). I also live in the bay!

What are your plans for leaving CA? You should do a video on actions to take if Biden wins. Your taxes next year could be over 60% if you are a CA resident and make over $400K. You may want to put your house on the market the day after Biden wins if you will be pushed over the $400K income level? Or if you are eventually planning on moving do it now! Wife refuses to sell our home or move out of CA. :)
Do you have a HK ID? You can hide money under your Chinese name in China... I know a person that has his US name and a HK ID with a different Chinese name. He buys real estate in China and has accounts in China and the US has no connection to his Chinese name. I think he tells the IRS he gives money to his "cousin" in China. :)

Okay here are your three levels of coverage. For low cost here you are not basically getting more coverage. here you can pay this much and get this much coverage. @@BeatTheBush the health care cost are so much lower in Japan, Malaysia, Spain, Portugal....etc. if i were you , i would move out of US.
@@kylengkyleng One has to consider the total cost of living, not just insurance. Japan and Europe are not cheap to live in overall for example. Some parts of SE asia are inexpensive as are some parts of central america.
@@Zeric1 my family is from Osaka, Japan. The cost of living is definitely cheaper than California.
@@kylengkyleng I'm sure it depends on what part of Japan and what part of the USA someone lives in. My comment was just for general overall cost. SE Asia and Central America are popular places for people leaving the US for a truly lower cost of living.
