Backward Locomotive Pulls Train By Itself Passing 4 Engine Train With DPU, Emptying The Yard On CSX!

  • Powerful Norfolk Southern Locomotive Pulls Train Long Hood Forward Past CSX Freight With 4 Locomotives! Listen to the locomotives working hard on both trains pulling up grade. These trains are in Cincinnati, Ohio just north of huge Queensgate Yard. The CSX train with mid train DPU pulled up to wait for the shorter NS train to pass. Right after the NS train passed the CSX train, the CSX train started working hard to get their train up to track speed. Notice the NS locomotive running long hood forward like they use to do back in the N&W days. The old Baltimore And Ohio Railroad CPL signals are still in use here. This location is known as Canal Ridge. Amtrak and Indian & Ohio Railway also use this track although they are difficult to catch especially since Amtrak only passes here 3 round trips a week.

    The "DP" means distributed power". this means that this locomotive has the DP equipment installed. This allows it to be the lead locomotive in the DP consist mid or rear train. This type of sticker is attached to locomotives which were not originally bought DP fitted but have had the equipment installed at a later date. it is only another version of radio controlled switchers. As a train can be controlled from a caboose set up for the job. It is possible if the correct cameras are fitted,in the lead unit of a train for the engineer (Aussie Enginedriver) to be in the lead unit of a mid or rear train DP consist and drive the train including sounding the horn for road crossings etc. In the Pilbara, Rio Tinto drives the trains from a building near the Perth Airport with no crew, three GE locomotives and 35,000 tonnes trailing at a max of 75kph(40 mph). Another Aussie Special is the Tronox Mineral Sands Train which runs from Broken Hill New South Wales to Kwinana to Kwinana South of Perth, with two or three crews who travel on the train in a specially modified Railcar, and between the crew car and the locomotives is a fuel car carrying about 68000 litres(18000 US Gals). This car is fitted with an automatic system which fills the locomotives whilst travelling. Fuel locations are remote and costly on the Nullabor Plain where this train runs. Also by having the crews on board and fuelling on the run, the actual train time is reduced by up to nine hours for the return trip. The crews get enough claimable hours in one week to reach over the fortnightly cycle maximum, They work about five and ahalf days in actual total time and have the rest of the fortnight off. If called whilst on the break, it costs the company in paid hours 8 to call them and twice the nunber of hours worked as paid hours. EG a six hour job can cost the company 20 hrs pay. The Tronox train is about 12000 tonnes and travels 1740 miles each way. Look for Tronox Mineral train on UA-cam

    Just a few months ago you were elbow to elbow with other fans at this location and now you're a party of one. Single long hood forward was a great catch. When CP got some of their first GE's they tried single units on midwest SOO sections it was dropped due to them plodding along @ 35mph or so plus the occasional road failure on single track. Get a kick out of the Wisconsin Central covered hoppers coming home for yet another load of roofing granules. CSX train had two obscure cars in the consist The red GRY Gary Railway coil car which is probably ex South Shore and then the gon past the DPU ex EJ& E. Note DPU is about 80% of the way back and sometimes is done to expedite yard setouts. Poor Norfie is getting an overload of activity flailing away at the stick. A fun trackside day

    DP is an entirely separate arrangement to control locomotives that are physically separated from the lead unit (s) and therefore impossible to connect via Multiple-Uniting. The first locomotive at the head of the train is called the "Lead unit", and "Remote units" can be located at separate positions throughout the train.

    Interesting little stat from Mike over at WWOT: I never noticed it before, but this video confirms it. Over there, they had a BAD derail with a sheared knuckle all at once. There was only one car involved but that front truck was MANGLED. On the rear? That was the first triple-axle railcar I'd ever seen, put it that way. :O That train had about 110 cars, maybe??? He made the comment of how, compared to CSX and CP, how Norfolk Southern used very few DPUs, "and here we are at another NS casualty. Use more DPUs, NS! One would figure they'd learn that by now," was basically the comment.
    Now, here you have a NS loco pulling a train solo...Go figure. :O

    The 'DP' is for railfans who may be watching who speak Spanish... 'Disfruta Plenamente'... 'DP' ... and means 'Enjoy Fully' = Disfruta (enjoy, command or imperative form of the verb 'disfrutar'), Plenamente (fully, the 'mente' makes 'plena' an adverb). You'd think they'd just spell it all out, but no, railroads are all on a tight budget due to increasing fuel costs. It seemed so apparent to me. Gracias por tu video, Señor Jaws. RT sends... envía... 3:09 mark - nice to see a couple of covered hoppers with the SP [Southern Pacific] and SSW [St. Louis Southwestern aka Cotton Belt] on the NS drag. Of course, both cars had the UP shield. The CSX had a plethora of coil cars still displaying their original home: NW, NYC, GTW, and Conrail. What we're seeing here is a business that has reduced train crews from four to two and the use of one crew to take care of essentially a minimum of two trains in one.

    FYI; The Southern Railroad also designated the long hood as forward. It wasn’t until after the merger of the Southern and N&W that they started designating the short hood end as forward. I use to pick up a Southern train and hated having to run the long hood forward.

      Never liked the long hood forward concept or the old Alco's with the nose splitting the view between the engineer and the head brakeman. Back in the day as a brakeman for the SP out of Houston, I often saw Southern, N&W, and L&N engines at the power/caboose yard on Hardy Street. I suspect they came off the Beaumont sub that leads to/from Louisiana because I never saw those engines on any other sub.

They did not have any F-units in freight service and did what they were used to in the steam days. Now with visibility beng more important they don't run long hood forward as much.

    That third loco [grey] on the second set was smokin like crazy, it looks different, is that an older unit? From what I've read, the newest locos are more efficient, and it took a while to achieve the standards.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 2 роки тому +3

      Yes, it's older. #509 is an AC44CW (essentially an AC Dash-9) which was built in 2001; the design is from the early 1990s. The other two locomotives on that train are Evolution Series locomotives. The lead locomotive, #3317, is a tier-4 emissions compliant ET44AH, which looks like it was built in about 2015; #970 is an older tier-2 compliant ES44AC-H, built in 2011. The crazy smoke is because it's an older, more worn-out locomotive, rather than the emissions standard of the design -- when new, it wouldn't have smoked like that.

      @donaldstanfield8862 2 роки тому +1

      @@beeble2003 Thanks, I'd read about the tier-4 standard some, amazing how emissions have dropped since the days of coal, it's incredible the amount of freight is moved with so much less pollution.

    Another AWESOME video
    That second train. Had some odd

    The first video of that push, pull train

    This video was from 2021??

    Does the graffiti on those cars
    Have any meaning to people
    Who ride the rails
    Or just someone's idea of art

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 2 роки тому +1

      Not sure what you mean about odd-shaped tank cars. If you're counting the single-loco NS train as the second one (second train to be seen in the video), that ends with five completely normal tanks. If you're counting the CSX train with the DPU (second train to pass the camera), that ends with four covered hoppers, nine completely ordinary looking tanks, a box car, two covered hoppers, two coil cars and another box car. Did you mistake the coil cars for tanks?

      @@michaelhewitt258 OK. :) BTW, they're not actually containers. The car is a flat cat with cradles to hold the coils, and the container-like part is just a removable lid to keep the weather out.
