It's incredible just how successfully secretive Sega was with Sonic 3 coverage at the time. Unlike Sonic 2, there's practically very little pre-release material of Sonic 3, aside from the oddball 1103 build coverage and some extremely late build screens and video clips. The second game's pre-release coverage by comparison was all the place.
I wonder if the secretive prerelease for 3 was a direct response to how open 2's was? Sonic 2 is notably one of the first games to get hyped up before release so industry standards didn't exist yet
@fgfhjfhjfbhfghf5771 I think part of it has to do with the fact that Sonic 2 final was leaked just weeks prior to its release. When the internet today allows that to be par for the course in the industry (just look at recent Nintendo releases), seeing something like this happen in 1992 is absolutely wild to imagine because most people did not have access to any contemporary means to download or access games illegally, aside from on-foot bootlegging at flea markets, Hong Kong vendors, magazines, etc.. That Simon Wai beta *was* pretty prominent in pirate circles, IIRC. Also, most people, even amongst said circles, wouldn't have any idea what a prototype or beta of a game was. They have just seen the label or name and ran with it.

With how many screenshots there are of this VHS recording, I do wonder if a former Disney employee has their hands on the tape, or it's in possession of a former SEGA employee - it could be either one. Considering how we found the Sonic 3 Prototype, I do wonder what our odds are for finding this prototype are.
I personally doubt this build will be found, as much as I'd love that, there's simply too much going against any new Sonic 3 builds being found due to how secretive Sega was about the game during development, I believe even the TTS Sonic 1 build has more chances of being found, since at least that was shown off in a big event However, the next best thing would be to find the vhs tape that was given off to those magazines, since it seems multiple copies were made, one can only hope
I managed to find more than just sonic 3 stuff. I shared a few triple trouble screenshots with chainspike before finding the sonic 3 content seen in this video.
Knuckles's competition sprite looks different. It looks more like he has a serious face, just lifting his fists up, unlike the final game, where he has a much more smug face, and pulling his legs back.
I was playing around with water in Sonic 2 but for some reason there was some very strange behaviour with EHZ2 and HTZ2 and it might be some sort of cutscene
a game would have a billion prototype builds from testing new features. most found are big milestones of sorts, like how Sonic 2 goes from CENSOR to Beta 4, or B4 to B5.

Realistically speaking, would it be something bad for Sega if they were released early prototypes of Genesis Sonic games? I lean, they know fans are dying hard for it, they could even make money with the info, like limited editions of new games and stuff.

@@CrozyOMD All act transitions are hard-coded, so in order to do that you'd basically have to rewrite the transition code to load data from a level that isn't AIZ2.
