  • Sailing down the Atlantic coast of Portugal is a delight, yes there are big Atlantic swells but the sun is out and we have some wonderful places to explore.
    We are sailing with the ARC Portugal so there is great camaraderie amongst all the boats, races, painting competitions, and lots of drinking! Don't miss the interview with Gunner and Tove on board there beautiful, and fast! Swan. This Norwegian couple have been everywhere and done done it all, a mine of information and lovely people.

    OUR ADVENTURE:
    We are sailing slowly around the world in our classic cutter rigged sailboat 'Fair Isle'. With the children leaving home we decided to sell our house in the UK and buy a boat in Holland. After two years refitting our Hans Christian 48T we have now set off a world voyage.
    We are retiring early because we want to attempt this voyage in good health and while we're fit and strong enough to really enjoy it. We will have to work a bit as we go until we can draw our pensions and we honestly don't know how well that will work. In our real lives we are journalists and filmmakers so it was only natural for use to document our travels by filming the journey. We aim to produce a professional standard vlog of the whole trip and try to give the viewer a real insight into what it's like to live and travel on a 48 foot sailboat.
    Our first aim is to sail South. After a winter getting iced in on the Markermeer in the Netherlands Judy insisted on warmer weather! So if you start from Episode 1 you will see us setting off from Eastbourne in the UK and travelling along the South Coast to Plymouth to enter a rally called ARC Portugal.
    Our first goal is to reach the Mediterranean and that means sailing across the infamous Bay of Biscay. This was a very good test for our boat as the bay lived up to it's fearsome reputation and split the whole fleet with a force 10 storm. Storm Miguel cut through our path and meant we had to run to mainland Spain to escape the massive seas and fearsome winds. Six boats couldn't make it in time and spent several very uncomfortable days at sea. The fleet had several broken boats, but thankfully no injured people. And this was just Episode 2!
    The excitement continued for the rest of our trip to the Med. Dolphins played in our bow wave, we sampled fantastic local foods and wines, great port in Porto! We found some beautiful anchorages and visit some wonderful historic places like Lisbon in Portugal, Cadiz in Spain and the fascinating port of Gibraltar.
    We will show you what it's like to winter in the Mediterranean, how much it all costs and give hints and tips on where to go how to save money with your boat and the places you stay. We are also talking to other sailors. After years of broadcasting journalism we know how to get peoples stories and we regularly film other sailors to show their boats and lifestyle as well as ours. We can always learn from others.
    Our long term plan is to spend a few years in the Mediterranean, on our list of place we want to visit are; Mallorca, Malta, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Italy, Tunisia, to name but a few!
    When we feel we've seen the best of what the Med has to offer we will cross the Atlantic to the Caribbean, we are hoping we can fit in a trip to the Azores on the way.
    We have no idea how long we might want to stay in the Caribbean but we do intend to have at least one excursion up the Eastern seaboard of the United States to visit the wonderful sailing areas of Florida, Virginia, sailing Meccas such as Chesapeake bay and hopefully get all the way up to New York.
    Of course the South Pacific is somewhere every sailor wants to go and will be a real draw for us. So going through the Panama canal will be a real milestone and we really look forward to having the big doors shut behind us and sailing into the biggest sailing playground of all!

    Hi Guys. Well.... stuck in Mar Menor...worse places to be, just a pity about the weather. We cannot quite see you. We are up in the mountains above Garrucha. Luckily we have our own farm so lots of room to move around and not get bored. We did ARC 89 and spent the winter in the Carrib. Loads of fun . I came from a background of offshore racing so being out in bad weather was quite normal. Quite funny to look back at the mess that others got into. Our idea of electrics was a torch. Just navigated with a sextant. Will watch next episode after supper.. Alan and Inky.

    Wouldn't waste your money on the shock wrist strap, not sure if it stops you being sick because it never works properly. It needs total contact with wrist and the backplate of the 'watch' using conductive gel. Might work if you are not sailing and can sit there holding it in place, but as soon as you start to move around, flex your wrist, use a winch or wear clothing it gets displaced, any minor movement and you lose the contact. Not cheap either, got one in a drawer somewhere. I take a tablet early after breakfast and keep busy, if you start to feel ill don't huddle under the sprayhood, don't go down below, you'll never come back up and do something like a turn at the helm. Importantly put your big boy (or girl) pants on when leaving port and soldier through!

  • @waderogers
    @waderogers 4 роки тому

    Nice setup on the preventer. That's exactly how to do it. If you can find a lower spot to put the line that runs forward to the sampson post, that'll reduce the line's tripping hazard. Otherwise, well done. Love the line management on the whisker pole. I run something similar with mine. As for a downwind headsail, unless you're going to spend a lot of time going nearly dead downwind, I'd look for an asymmetrical spinnaker in a sock. The sock makes dousing the sail quick and safe. Plus, I'd go for a heavier weight like a .75 oz weight or higher. Those asymmetrical spinnakers can get quite loaded up with wind in a hurry! Portugal look absolutely beautiful! I crewed on a Hans Christian 38 for a couple of years on various races here in Alaska. Great boats for passage making. We once were in 4-5 meter seas going downwind and surfing down the waves. That was about the only time I got a little seasick and I've been sailing for 45 years (I'm 60 and recently retired). Cheers!

  • @pvdneste
    @pvdneste 5 років тому +2

    like your setup for the spinnaker pole. You could perhaps improve it by adding a (snatch)block through which you guide the yankee or genoa sheet. It helps preventing chafee on the sheet

      Well, long story. We are talking about the 70s and 80s. Only instrument was a compass. And channel 16 radio transmitter. We got our position info from passing tankers. No weather reports. When the Northern winds come at force 8 from central Europe they hit the Alps and come at you from above, perpendicular to the sea ! A few boats and skippers got lost. I mean swallowed by Poseidon...

      A funny story .... 2 days out of Marseille, approaching Sardenia. Late night, am at the helm (no auto pilots then), and suddenly out of the sea, at about 250 yards, a huge grey creature jumps out of the water making strange noises. In panic I call out the other 2 experienced skippers who were in deep sleep. They burst out laughing at my terror. It was an American submarine, which I almost rammed, coming up for air !!

    Love the production value of you "vlog" your previous professional experience shines through, thank you for sharing. You mentioned in this episode the cost of Lagos marina, if you are looking for ideas on what people may like to be informed about, this is certainly something I think would be of interest, i.e. marinas versus anchorages while trying to balance a cruising budget, provisioning, basically hidden costs that new or potentially new sailors may not consider. I have heard of sorts a general rule of thumb of 10% maintenance costs of the value of your craft and would be interested during your journey if this is actually a fair assessment, obviously this is with respect to the maintenance of your boat rather than being inclusive of marina fees. Look forward to watching many more episodes of your adventure. Fair winds !

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  5 років тому +1

      We will certainly be mentioning cost throughout as that is a big concern to us! I think the 10% rule is probably too much ( depends on the cost of your boat though) We maintain Fair Isle to the highest level but that doesn’t equate to 10%, more like 5%. If you managed to get a bargain boat though & maybe something 20 -30 years old, you probably would end up spending 10% a year to keep her in good condition. If a boat is structurally sound with a good engine the only really large expenses barring an accident is redoing the standing rigging and sails. Rigging would be about 7-8 thousand pounds for our boat. Should be done every 10 years, most people don’t... My fathers boat had the same standing rigging for 35 years! We will have ours done before we do the Atlantic. Other large expenses are really cosmetic or luxury’s really I.e. better chart plotters, watermaker, extra sails new furnishings etc.
      We will also try and compare cost in different cruising areas. We know the Med will be expensive compared to the Caribbean for instance, but don’t really know how much. The cost of marinas in summer in the Med can be shocking but the 6 months from from Oct. to April seem to be less than prices in the UK. After we have some real world knowledge we will try a do a video just on costs. Steve

    I have recently bought a down wind sail for my much smaller yacht; only 10 meters nothing compared to yours. I wanted a spinnaker type sail and went for a furling gennaker. I bought it from Elvstrøm sails. It works really well, simple to deploy and not a “kite of fright” as some call a spinnaker. They also produce a sail that is like a code zero but is two sails joined together and so can be a code zero or spilt into a goose winged larger sail. I think that is more suitable for larger yachts like yours. There service wasn’t great, but maybe I was just unlucky. Certainly there are lots of other sail makers that produce furling gennakers. I really enjoy your channel, it is a pleasure to watch. I hope to follow in your wake in the not too distant future. I look forward to watching your next episode.

    What a great find! We'll be following in your wake next spring so all the information is very usefull! I'm not familiar with the Hans Christians and came across the old listing for Fair Isle while having a look see. You've done a LOT of varnish work! Oh and a quick edit. Peter Sanders at Sanders sails Lymington made a great gennaker for me. The sail does exactly what I asked him to achieve and the service was truly excellent. No affiliation just a wholehearted recommendation.

I can tell you pottering around in shorts & tee shirt in sunshine & 20 degrees makes it a whole different experience to trying to find 3 days in a row where it wouldn't rain between October and April in the UK! You'll love the cruising life, welcome to the party!

      I own a parasailor, a spinnaker and a light wind genua, but on longer downwindpassages especially over night we always use two genuas ore genua and fock with two poles, its much easier to control, especially in the night. The other sails we use on shorter trips during daytime

    Again, nice video. Like the feel of the various interviews of the others in the rally. To me a downwind sail has always been a bit of a bother. It takes skill, and time and money. Better to put up a big genoa and pole it out imo, or a code zero on its own furler.

    • @svfairisle

    Your series have been delightful and, of course, inspired a certain envy in this charter sailor. I do hope you get to Cartagena, Spain.My father, who was in the US Navy, was stationed there from 1958-1960. Although I was only 9 years old, l remember it as the time of my life. My parents gave me free rein to explore the city with my Spanish friends. There was a ruin of a castle or villa right near the waterfront, which was known as “ Castillo de Los Patos”. - castle of the ducks. That’s now been made into a lovely park; but at the time it had tunnels underneath to serve as air raid shelters.The harbor is beautiful natural harbor, ringed by hills that have 19th century fortifications. Some were still in use; some had been abandoned.To starboard as you pass the sea wall are two WW2 era submarine pens blasted into the side of the rock. These were to service Nazi U-boats operating in the Mediterranean. The US government converted them into ships’ fuel storage. The city was the landing point for the Carthaginian army during the Punic wars. Apparently a number of ruins from that era have been excavated. The city is not on the tourist route, but you might going it worth the trip. Better-known Alicante and Valencia are not too much further up the coast,

      Bruce BECKNER Hi Bruce, yes we’ve heard lots of good things about Cartagena and are looking forward to exploring, sounds like you had a great time doing just that. We are going to drop into Cadiz on the way down too, another big former American navel base and of course we’ll be passing cape Trafalgar where Nelson defeated the joint French and Spanish forces lead by Napoleon. Certainly lots of history! Steve

    You asked for some new sail suggestions.
    Go for a parasailor (less roll, less difficult to handle, can be used up to +20kts winds) instead of a spinnaker, a code-zero is nice to have as well.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  5 років тому

      Arh you see I've had so many mixed opinions on the parasailor. Love the idea of one, but to be honest I just think it's too much for us short handed., Would love to be proved wrong! One of the boats on the ARC had one and I was looking forward to seeing the fly it but they never did, mainly because they were short handed. That says to me it might be a step too far? Have you actually used one? Steve

    • @steenkigerrider5340
      @steenkigerrider5340 5 років тому

      @@svfairisle Yes I have. A family member has a 15 meter yacht equipped with one. When sailing with them it was used a couple of times. I found it a lot friendlier to handle than a classic spinnaker. We got it up and down with delightful ease with two people. I wasn't familiar with that type of sail at the time at all. It just sat up there and did what it was supposed to do without the quirky (and sometimes intimidating) behavior of the classical spinnaker. If you have the chance get somebody with some real practical handling experience to demonstrate it to you. In the meantime enjoy yourselves and watch out (before you jump in to the water) for the (huge) White Shark cruising around Majorca.

    That ship will point up with the best of them. But, down wind, pretty crap, big fat dragging undersides. Comfortable though. But you need, as you are slightly short handed, a code zero and a symmetrical spinnaker, sock launched. If you are truly "cruising" ie attempting to go downwind with the trades, etc, the yankee is too smal as your head sail. I would use something yankee size or even bigger as your furling 'staysail' and pole it 'it' out instead of trying to use your main for downwind. Your mast is set further forward than a Bermuda sloop, so a secondary track for a storm tri sail should be in place, perfect for beating out of a tight spot in a fecking big blow.

    How do you both get on with the low freeboard??
    Did you decide on a sail??
    What about a top down furling asymmetrical spinnaker? Be perfect for that bowsprit of yours ??

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  3 роки тому

      Thanks Gary. I don’t find the low freeboard to be a negative, we’re still a really dry boat, the only time we’ve got splashed in the dog house was rounding Cape de la Hauge in France & that was 20ft steep waves coming from all directions, it was before we started the YT channel but took a shot at the time, we used it in the old titles. Of course much less windage with the low freeboard too. I think we’ll go for a top down furler but we haven’t been able to work on any of our usual projects since lockdown so big items are on hold for a bit.

      hi again Peter, sorry doing these in reverse order as I work down the page! We stayed in Oeiras when we were there which is a very nice marina with lots going on. I haven't really got any first hand info on best stops as we did it rather quickly with the ARC. One of the downsides really as you stick to a fairly tight schedule. If I were you though I would head right down to Lisbon. That whole area looks like a good area to explore if youve got the time and we heard good things. Our onl;y other stop on the way down was Sines which is nice, but foggy when we were there! Hopefully the Northerlys have set in now and you'll get a decent sail. Enjoy, Steve

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  5 років тому +1

      It wasn't mooring fees as such as we were lifted and had the boat on the hard for a month. The price was €200 for the lift, same to put back in (Much cheaper than the UK) and €11/day to keep the boat on the hard, which again is very cheap. I know of marinas where they charge you the same on the hard as in the water. By comparison to leave the boat in Lagos was about €80/day. if you're just wanting to visit the Faro area the best option by far is to anchor, which of course is free! Thats where we are now, anchored off Culatra which is lovely. Hope that helps, Steve
