    Very glad to have found you, I love that your channel features more actual sailing in contrast to endless boat projects. It is reassuring to see how a heavy displacement, skeg rudder and full keel boat copes with the various sea conditions and overcoming the difficulties of maneuvering in tight berths. Both of you are very articulate which makes for pleasant listening. Your city and other tours afford just the right amount of film time to provide enough content to tic off those trails I myself would like to follow.
    PS. You chose an excellent name for your boat, quite clever might I add.

Wife and I and the ship's cat.The big plus doing it alone and not 'flotilla' sailing being that you can visit nicer ports and there's no time pressure.We were given great advice before our journey by some trusted delivery skippers, and met so many others with whom we are still friends.

      It was a 2 year long search for the prefect cruising boat (which of course doesn't exist!) But we think we came as close as possible with Fair Isle, certainly for our needs. We're just working on a video that goes through the whole selection process actually and the experiences I've had with other boats / experts we've talked etc. that have influenced that decision making process. So look out for that if you're interested in what makes a good cruising boat.

    Greetings! After watching a few of your adventures, I just had to join the club! What is it that draws one to your channel? Well it all starts with the boat! Fair Isle is a beautiful sailing vessel with all her brass and teak and traditional lines, one can only admire such a beautiful vessel. What comes next, is getting to know the crew, you both are very likable people, and that is what keeps me watching. I sail a Tartan 34C myself here in Long Island NY, and just love the classic lines of Fair Isle. I look forward to watching all your adventures now that im a subscriber I can work my way through all you adventures. Thanks for all your efforts in filming and producing your adventures. I've had her for 15 plus years. Quite spartan below compared to that beauty you have! But I do appreciate the teak she has topsides . I dont sail her that much these days, but she's always in the water, ready to go. I cant imagine how awesome it must be to own a vessel like you have. Good luck to both you and the lovely Judy! Ha! Yes I had a 16th century house with a cast iron loo, this isn’t much different! I wouldn’t swap it for anything though, it’s solid bronze and absolutely bullet proof. • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  5 років тому

      Hi David, well I’ve sailed all my life from a small boy, so 50 years, lots of different boats. My father lived on a boat for 35 years, just stopped living on it it a month ago actually, at 82 he thought it was time! I’ve sailed all over the world on other people’s boats and with some very famous sailors in my capacity as a BBC cameraman. I also did a circumnavigation of Great Britain in a 32 foot Sadler for the BBC.
      But as far as qualifications go I have none! In fact Judy has a RYA competent crew so she’s more qualified than me! I think sailing like most things is about experience so I’m happy with that. Also I think if you’ve got a practical -methodical brain then sailing isn’t difficult. Why do you ask? Are you an aspiring sailor or an experienced one? Steve

    Hi guys great videos and really enjoying the coastlines. I know Alvor in Portugal well and love it. Quick Question - what software are you using for your nav as it looks really good and I think you said you have it on a number of ipad devices. Im planning the route you have done in April 2020 and would welcome some info on the nav side. Thanks.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  5 років тому

      Hi Sean, I use Navionics on the ipad & really like it. I actually got it as a backup to the boats chartplotter but I prefer the ipad as it's much more user friendly, just as accurate and you can have it on all your devices (tablet and phone) for a fraction of the price of the software for the chartplotter so it's really good value. I even have a high quality bluetooth GPS dongle that uses all the worlds gps systems that can feed the tablets to give a super accurate position (the ipads is good enough to be honest), but it's another backup and means if you have a tablet or laptop without gps it can get it from the dongle.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  5 років тому

      Hi James, well there's a question! I'm afraid I'm going to cop out of the 'how long' part a bit in that a lot of it is obviously down to your aptitude. What I can say is that while there's a place for formal 'training' the way to learn is to actually sail,. Just get out on a boat with someone who knows what they're doing and if you've got a practical type brain you won't have a problem, the longer you sail the more you will learn. As regards sailing Fair Isle, just because she's a bigger boat doesn't necessarily make her more difficult to sail. It does mean that any mistakes will be more expensive! Single handing is possible, it's not the sailing the makes single handing hard, it's docking! Centre cockpit is good for single handing, you would have to bring the mainsail lines back to the cock pit, something I wouldn't usually advise. Hope that helps. Steve

      Não tenho certeza se conseguiríamos legendar todos os idiomas, mas obrigado por lutar com os ingleses. Steve

    La, c'est un carénage rapide...!! Vivant, aussi.
    Sur la video du carenage..la traduction disait que vous étiez à "Pharaon..!!" (Faro). Ce qui me fait dire que votre bateau (splendide..cuivres..roses, laiton, porcelaine...dans les wc..) est..Toutankhamon..!! Bateau, que je vais allé visiter lors de mon prochain visionnage.
    Je comprends qu'a 8mn 25, votre "Sirène"...arrête de pomper. (je voyais la..."un Shadock").

    Bonne journée a vous.

    Ok, be honest here. How humid is it inside the boat?? I mean things like your bedding and cloths, are they always damp when you get in to bed or put on a shirt? And please get a nice Honda 4strq outboard. LOL.

      You might not believe it, because I wouldn't have, but there is no dampness on this boat! The only thing that has ever got damp aboard in a bed sheet that was stuffed into a low down cupboard with no ventilation so it got some mold on it. But that was in winter in Holland when there was ice outside! Steel boats will always have damp, even in warm weather, i know because my dad had one for years. Glass boats can be bad if they're not lined well. Fair Isle has teak staving covering the whole of the inside of the hull, this along with the fact all the storage is ventilated properly (except for the aforementioned cupboard!) means we just don't suffer with it.
      As far as the outboard goes, yes I know I should give up a buy a new one but 4 strokes are so heavy & it's really difficult to get new 2 strokes now.

      How about getting an electric outboard? Lightweight, easy to manoeuver, starts when needed, carry a spare battery and you will have plenty of range. Great video as always and hugely envious ;)
