  • There are a few songs that can be considered rites of passage for guitarists. One of these is the Lynyrd Skynyrd classic “Sweet Home Alabama.” Released on the band’s 1974 album Second Helping, it is considered by many to be one of the greatest southern rock songs of all time. “Sweet Home Alabama” isn’t overly complicated to play on guitar, and even if you’re only ready for level one, you’ll still be able to play along with the original recording! If you want to get people up on their feet, dancing and singing along, it’s a tune that’s hard to beat.

    About Ayla Tesler-Mabe:
Ayla has been making waves in the world of guitar playing as a professional guitarist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and composer, since the early age of 14. After only playing for two years, her first UA-cam video (a rendition of John Mayall’s “Hideaway”) put her on the map and kickstarted her music career. She has since been featured in Rolling Stone magazine, become a member of the Ernie Ball and Fender family of artists, and earned various Berklee College of Music scholarships. Musically, Ayla finds great pleasure in exploring the numerous avenues available to her through various styles of music, as seen through her work with Calpurnia and Ludic.

Ayla is a gifted guitar player who teaches to any level without making it about her own ability to command a song. So many teachers, even in "beginner" lessons cannot keep themselves from showing off. A teacher needs to check his or her ego at the door. I find that female teacher/players are much better at recognizing this and implementing their lessons with this in mind. Her delivery is clear, concise, and without any trace of condescension. Great job, Ayla!

This style of lesson definitely works, and for someone down at the lower levels, here are several reasons why:
Even your lowest levels still give the feel of the song, many beginner interpretations don't.
We can see what it would take to move up to the next level and can practice those skills.
We can also see what it might take to get to our eventual goal of playing a song like the original and can make the determination of how much work it would take to get closer to that if we want to go that far. Or we can decide if there's a sweet spot lower down, that we'd still be happy playing.
I vote for more of these.

I totally agree with Surgeon. There's NO way to bite off this song in one chew (at least for someone at my level). Sneaking up on it helps me understand the song, not get frustrated, let me build my skills into it, and ... it's just great.

Great lesson. I am a 78 year old beginner. Actually tried playing at 16 years old, but dropped out as I had no help,or teaching. I‘m also doing the Rick Beato course, which is v good, but it‘s also v motivating to be able to play this fantastic riff, slowly and badly, but recognisable😉 I‘ll certainly follow this excellent teacher.

Great lesson. Thought I was at level 5 but had drifted away from the exact licks a little. This brought me back nicely and quickly. The Skynyrd guys always said that the reason bar bands covering their songs often sound off/wrong is they don’t get the licks the way they are on the records. It really is all in the details.
I still marvel at how perfect Ed King’s signature licks were for this song when he recorded them ..48 years ago-wow. And the irony that the licks and solos in an iconic Southern rock song …were composed and played by a guitarist from Glendale, CA (LA) who didn’t care for Stratocasters much and only played one because the other LS guys played Gibsons

I love your '5 Level' concept. Because you very accurately break down the complexity of the song(s), and then ramp it up in intervals - in the same way most people learn when listening to others playing. At first just the rough shape of it - then building it up.
It's very intuitive and at the same time teaching us the finer details with every step up.
You're a gift to the scene.

Glad some like yourself in the newer generations still appreciate the masterful guitarists of the 60's and 70's and are teaching others, including yours truly. Your 5-step process is very helpful so I hope you keep these coming. I am almost 70 now but only started learning the electric guitar when I retired a few years ago. This is the best Sweet Home lesson that I've seen on YT. I like how you include the tablature under your fret board hand and slowly go over the fingering. That really helps. I haven't tried playing it yet, but based on what you've shown I could probably play up to about Level 2 or 3. I'd need to do a little more work on Levels 4 and 5. Love this style of learning to play. Great teacher. Keeps me interested learning bit by bit while not being overwhelming.
