Thank you very much for this review, I can see that you really try to delve into the movie and I think that is what makes it so fascinating.
I didn't love this film in the same way as I do other Kore-Eda entries but I found it fascinating - and frustrating (he typed - just as Luke said it!). There are a couple of great performances here (or maybe three) along with a really brilliant story. So although it was a relatively lowly four for me (if that isn't an oxymoron) I strongly suspect it is going to rise in my estimation as I re-watch it. The other thing I'd add is - how weird the Japanese legal system as depicted in the film seemed to me. But the extra material seems to think the court scenes were a reasonable depiction. I have felt more comfortable with the Iranian court scenes in Kiarostami's films. Go figure.
