  • Erik, the Asian Movie Enthusiast presents:
A review of “The Third Murder”, a Japanese drama/mystery from 2017 that was directed by Hirokazu Koreeda and stars Koji Yakusho, Masaharu Fukuyama, and Suzu Hirose.
Shortly after his release from 30 years in prison,twice-convicted killer Takashi Misumi is arrested again on suspicion of committing yet another murder. He immediately confesses to killing his boss at the food factory from where he was recently fired, but his defense attorney is having doubts about what really happened.
This is a high quality, deliberately paced mystery that adds complexity and uncertainty in a very methodical way.

Very very good review, thanks as always!! :-)
I really enjoyed The Third Murder, but am actually desperate for a second viewing to try and catch some details I feel I might have missed. Koreeda is definitely now one of my favourite directors.

Thanks! I agree that it will probably take multiple viewings to catch the details of this one.

This movie does require your attention and keeps you double thinking. I was still contemplating after i was finished . Agree great acting and loved the visuals as well.
I am excited for his new movie that just won at the Cannes festival. And I've been wanting to see Nobody knows for a long time. Hopefully I will see it soon.
    As usual great review Eric.

Just like you said, Suzu is awesome in movies like this, Rage and Our Little Sister and another one I've seen recently called "Let's Go Jets!"

I honestly consider Koreeda as the single most important Japanese filmmaker working today, but I gotta say that "The Third Murder" was a tad disappointing. It obviously is a competent film, but I found the subject matter and the commentary a bit overdone, there were even a few shots during the last few minutes that were meant to be symbolic but really just looked tacky. The performances were by far the best part about the picture, but in the end, the direction didn't really do anything for me, at least not this time. That being said, good video, buddy, I always dig your reviews :)

Good movie from a great director.. excellent performances by all three lead characters..but slow pace and without Mistry..well I think director focusing humain aspect of the story rather than suspense.quite aspected from him..

Yeah. I definitely understand your opinion on this one. It's not quite as purely interesting as some of my favorites from him.

The underlying Christian themes in the movie were really interesting too.

Recently watched "Laplace's Witch" with Suzu and directed by Takashi Miike. "Laplace's Witch" was kinda disappointing. It had a great first 20 to 30 minutes and then was derailed by flashbacks and long-winded speeches.

    Thanks for the review Erik!
I've got mixed after watching this movie.
It's an interesting story ( how the justice in Japan works plus what is really the true story), but i had to pause it twice during the movie, because i couldn't stay focus to follow it. The pace is to slow for a 2 hour film.
After the movie i didn't feel satisfied.
    The acting was good.
I like Masaharu Fukuyama ( Galileo series and films, Scoop) and the very talented Suzu Hirose ( Let's go Jets and this years very good jdrama Anone).
She has an older sister Alice Hirose ( Flare) who is also a talented actress.
The story was good enough with twists that make you guess throughout the film i agree with you.
Maybe i should watch it again later this year haha.
    I found a interesting horror/mystery movie "Inerasable" (2015/16).
With Yuko Takeuchi (plays a mystery novel writer), Ai Hashimoto ( the student resident of a haunted appartment and who send a letter to the writer for advise).
The film doesn't use a lot of scare tactics and the protagonists aren't scream queens ( like you see in a lot of horror movies 😊).
But it tells a story about the ghosts and what happend to the former residents who lived there.
What for me this movie did very good was not the jump scares, but to create an uneasy and restless feeling. Even after the film.

Thank you for your thoughts on this one. I should watch "Let's Go Jets" and "Anone" when I have a chance.
I really like "Inerasable." Like you said, it does not have jump scares and is very good overall!

      Thanks for your reaction.
Yeah Inerasable is a good movie and glad you like it too. So ill see your review at the Asian Horror Reviews (2016) segments haha.
If you like dancing girls, laughter and feel good movies then Let's Go Jets is for you.
If you like a serious (slow pace) coming of age drama with twists and every character has their on baggage (history) then the TV Series Anone is for you. :)
Hope you will enjoy them like i did.
