Knowing that if a record producer would have kept his warped opinions to himself and kept his mouth shut - we would still have Karen. He told a shy upcoming self conscious young girl that even though she was a major talent she would never be good enough because she was "too fat". WHAT MORON DOES THAT? People think about what words actually come out of your lips. Be mindful about what you are commenting on posts. He literally killed her. I absolutely adore Karen and admire her God given gifts. How privileged are we to have her music continue to touch our souls after all these years... thanks for your reaction Tasha.

Another person who was awful to Karen was Bette Midler. Midler sang a version of "Superstar" before the Carpenters covered it n for a Platinum record... Midler thereafter often and qyite publically made fun of how Karen looked ... Midler apologized after Karen died. Thanks for nothing.

    • @michaelbarlow6610
      @michaelbarlow6610 3 місяці тому

@tinasmallwood9546. It was NOT a writer or a record producer whose comment that Karen was "chubby" that caused Karen to become an anoretic/bulimic! It was actually her domineering, Felix Unger to an extreme, neat freak mother Agnes Carpenter who hero-worshipped her son and viewed him as a genius musical phenom, but alternately viewed or treated her incredibly gifted daughter as a no-talent, second class citizen/loser that caused Karen to develop her mental illness because Karen felt unloved by her mother!

Karen and Richard did all the harmonies on their records by overdubbing in multiple tracks. When they toured they had the band members fill in the harmonies which worked out real well. You should check out the Carpenters on the Ed Sullivan show in 1970 doing a live performance at Walter Reed Army Hospital outdoors. singing a medley of Burt Bacharach hits. Karen is singing and playing drums in this video and the band members are adding to their harmony. Excellent performance and quality for it being 1970 and singing outside.

I remember being in the backseat of the car while my mom and grandma were in the front. This song came on and I just thought one day my Grandma won’t be here. One day my mom won’t be here. Yeah I had those deep thoughts. Hahaha. My grandma lived with us years later. Got to know her so well. She taught me to crochet. She died when I was 15. Big loss. She was a strong sweet woman. My mom just turned 88! Remarkable women in my life. I’m rambling but this song always brings tears to my eyes. And I’m still not sure why. Her voice is just incomparable. Love it. The harmonies on the records are Karen and Richard. When they performed live, the band members would join in. But on the records, it was just Karen and Richard. The effect was created by over-dubbing. They would record their first track with just the two of them. Then, they would play it back and sing the harmonies again with the track, so that the sound was doubled. They could do this over and over. One of their songs on the "Close to You" album had 32 over-dubbed harmony tracks. There's a video on UA-cam that you should watch: "The Carpenters - Richard explains overdubbing.

Perhaps others already mentioned this, but Richard took note of a short verse of We've Only Just Begun on a local bank commercial on TV. He recognized Paul Williams' voice & since they were both under contract at A&M records, Richard caught Paul in the parking lot and asked him if there was more to the song... and there was. Also, as others have said, Karen and Richard recorded multiple harmonies of their voices and over a dubbed them on tape. The other players on their records are hired professional musicians on staff at the record studio.

Richard in addition to singing and playing piano and keyboards, he did all the arrangements, wrote some songs and was the producer in most cases. The backup singers you hear on this video was an overdub with Richard's voice overdubbed a couple of times to make it sound like more than one voice. If you're doing a deep dive into the Carpenters, dig deep. Their non-hit material is just as compelling. Songs such as "Baby It's You", "A Song for You", "Road Ode" and many, many others are worth a listen (and review). They multi-tracked their two voices to create the backing vocals. Not until their Christmas album did they dare add other voices to their recordings. What you hear as a "choir" is just the two of them. That's why it blends so well. Richard's arrangements were key to showcasing Karen's voice so well. You couldn't pick.a better group to dig into. You won't be disappointed. Saw them live in '73. They were truly on "Top of the World".

I loved your reaction to this, one of the most beautiful songs ever performed. And also, Karen played the drums in this song. She was the drummer for some time.

Fun trivia fact. This was taken from a coffee commercial. Richard heard it, and created a whole new arrangement for them to record!! Absolutely brilliant.

I was producer for Discovery back in the early '90s, interviewed and did a TV deal with Richard, a confident, supremely talented artist while also modest and personable. Re: Karen, he said they tried everything, finally had to give up. He said there were numerous 'issues' at hand.

A to of background that you hear, whether it be instruments, or vocals came from session players. The Carpenters (like so many others) used the LA session group known as "The Wrecking Crew." These musicians were an eclectic and amazing group of pros who appeared on so many albums back then...There is a great documentary on them..Very interesting.

Richard and Karen would record a song, then in post production, they would record their own backing vocals. Also, this song started out as a jingle for California-based Crocker Bank. Richard Carpenter happened to be watching TV when the ad for the bank came on. He heard the tune, which at the time was short, and immediately began looking for its composer. As it turned out, Paul Williams, who had penned a lot of music and was himself a recording artist, had written this tune. Richard Carpenter worked out a deal with Williams, and they flushed the song out, the result being what you hear on this video.

Similar to Patsy Cline, Karen Carpenter's voice is iconic, sliky smooth, & like no other. Patsy is my #1 favorite, followed closely by Karen in the #2 spot. No one else can compare or compete and both taken away from the world far too soon. Just imagine the vast library of wonderful music we would have received from these two naturally talented ladies, had life not been so cruel.
Please check out Karen's last recording titled "Now" (1983).
It makes me cry every time I hear it as her voice is so hauntingly beautiful...

As I sit here with tears in my eyes, it takes me back to our wedding - there could never be a better wedding song. It's been 50 years and the music is still with us. It is so sad - her death was a real loss to so many of us. I can't help but think if she was still with us, she could fill a stadium with just those who had marriages and love stories to this music.

The reason Richard Carpenter hated the photo on the cover of the "Close To You" album was because it made Karen and Richard appear to be a married couple, when of course they are actually sister and brother!

Many people, before the Carpenters hit it Big, thought that it would be Richard, that would be the star of the band. But when Karen started singing, her Star shone Hotter than Richard. Fortunately, Richard knew that Karen was the Star, and thus Richard composed and arranged all their songs to showcase Karen's singing voice and talent. Richard was a Good Big Brother. He did great.
There is a video with John Bettis, who was in Richard's jazz band, along with Karen. They asked John, "What did Karen sound like, the first time you heard her sing?" His response was, "She sounded just like she does today, and she was only 16 years old. Karen had that God-given voice from Heaven, but she didn't want to sing. She just wanted to be the drummer."
But, fortunately for us, once she started singing, they pushed her into the spotlight. RIP, Karen.

This song was written for a TV commercial for Crocker Bank, targeted at newlyweds looking to finance their first mortgage. I remember seeing it when I was a little kid. The ad got such a positive response for the song that it was offered to the Carpenters, who expanded it and put it out as a record. HUGE hit. But yeah, it was an ad in its first incarnation!
If you look hard around the internet, you may be able to find a film called "Superstar" by Todd Haynes. His first film, which he made with a home camera and a bunch of Barbie dolls. It's the story of Karen Carpenter and her battle with anorexia, but he couldn't get the rights to her story from her family, who wanted to deny and bury what had happened to her, so he had to use the dolls. (He also couldn't get the rights from Mattel to use the dolls, so the project never got a release until the rise of the internet, when it leaked online.) Do see if you can find it, because her story is a great cautionary tale about the ravages of fame.

The "Christmas Waltz", "Merry Christmas Darling" and the "First Snowfall" songs are awesome. Richard Carpenter works magic with arranging songs. Those arrangements complemented Karen's voice. He is very talented in his own right.

In the 60s and 70s, there was an organized group of session players in L.A., called The Wrecking Crew. These were musicians that hadn't got their break yet, or weren't able to go on long tours for whatever reason. The Carpenters utilized them often.
