- The Mk3 Ford Focus RS is an impressive car. Four wheel drive with 350 horsepower and an epic sound track. So when Hendy Performance asked if I would like to spend a couple of days with their development car the is running over 500 horsepower I just had to say yes !

Lovely car, what I don’t understand is the Turbo lag, I have a Focus RS running the Dream Science tune Roughly 410bhp and there is no Turbo lag no matter which gear I’m in foot down GONE!!! I’ve now got their custom map, which means it’s sat in launch control all the time in Sport mode and the pops and bangs on overrun are ridiculous (I’m 47 and I just feel like a big kid when I drive this). The engine is pretty much standard and have had absolutely no issues with it in my 3 years of ownership. However, as fantastic as I find my RS and for the money I don’t think there’s a better car out there for B road bashing, I could never pay 55k for a Ford Focus no matter what it’s had done. Great review as always, keep those videos coming, it’s good to see these reviews from someone who isn’t just out of nappies😂👍

Petrol Ped absolutely, fair play to the younger guys and what they’ve achieved through UA-cam, but it’s refreshing to get a car review from someone who’s watched how cars have changed through the years and not just in the last 10 😂. Agree that it must be the size of the Turbo, but surely, with the amount of investment Hendy Ford have put into it, turbo lag is one of the things they should have rectified immediately. My RS is 410bhp, close to 4 seconds 0-62 and bang for buck, I don’t think there’s anything better. However when you start talking 500bhp and 55k your into hyper hatch territory. Amg A45s, Audi RS3, etc the car was built in 2016 and at the time every thing it was put up against it wiped the floor with them. Now however they are a great investment as no longer making the RS. But they can’t compete with Hyper hatches and shouldn’t be trying too
If any car could be classed as a hooligan well that RS truly is. Nobody makes affordable fast hatchbacks like Ford do!

With the turbo lag it reminds me of my old Renault 5 GT Turbo - put your foot down, nothing much happens... revs build quite slooooooowly until "oh bollocks!"

Some work has gone into that, forged internals very nice. It looks a fun drive but it would never be a sleeper, even without that wrap.

OK! I realise that Hendy have stuffed a lot of kit into this beast, but if I had £55k to spend on a car, it wouldn't be this one. It's too track focused for my liking.
Just looked at Autotrader and there's a nice GLC 63S for this money. And it's 0-60 of 3.8 seconds would do me :-))...

I've got to ask you this though. Is the Subaru Impreza STi Spec C Type RA yours? Did you replace the Ford RS with it? Certainly looks like you're having fun.
With regard to your videos, you need to "talk to your YT viewers". Tell them what's happening. In your last video, a silver Renault went past you under some "waved flag", and you gestered your disapproval.

Bit of old school turbo lag, love it! reminds me of the 99 Audi A3 t i had. No were near as much power as this RS you're driving, however similar characteristics when getting the most out of it. Such a fun car to drive.

Sadly they are selling the Viper for a customer otherwise they would have let me drive it 😢

I wouldn't have any issues dailying the focus & to have fun with it on the weekends. My car's turbo is a small
size & starts spooling up early in the
rev range.

the true measure of a cars power is when it accelerates uphill just as fast as it does normally,. My MK3 RS has a Precision NX2 which has pretty much all the lag dialled out, boost is in by 2800rpm. The map on mine is very linear, it feels like a normally aspirated car.
Also, It's not 4 wheel drive it's all wheel driv, there is a huge difference ;-)

It's not often that I can relate to stuff in videos like this, not driven many cars and all I have driven are your 2010's daily drivers, but I'm able to relate to the turbo lag experience, from driving a 2011 2.0 diesel Zafira B, that's how I can relate to driving an F40. :)
I don't know if it's because something else has broken with it, wouldn't be a surprise, but up to 2-2.5k there's nothing, then whoosh, revs shoot up and you feel like you're accelerating ten times faster (although that's going from a 60 minute to a 6 minute 0-60, not so comparable with an F40). :)

Reminds me of the Evo FQ400, bags of turbo lag and ok once you are on boost but not very good off it. It’s a lot of money when there are other cars that can do the job much better for a lower cost. But it’s cool they did it!

Pete, I'm in the US I found your channel a bit ago when you drove the Steeda Q Series Mustang (of which I have one). Then you drove the Boxter Spyder (I have a 981 Boxter GTS). Now a Focus RS! (I like those so much I have two!) YOUR DRIVING ALL MY CARS! Will be watching!

@@PetrolPed Well other than a few pick up trucks I have the other couple of cars I have would be tough. I have probably the lowest mileage 2003 Mercedes C32amg in the country and a 1989 Honda CRX Si with a turbo'd B16 with forged internal (nicer now than when I bought it!).
I do have a deposit down for a year now on the coming Corvette C8 Z06. Hoping it is released within the next year!!

The old style turbo lag was a bit of fun back in the day but it's not for me. For the money they are looking for you would have the choice of an 2018 M2, M4 or RS3 taken to stage 2 and still leave some cash in your pocket to fill it with juice for a while. Any of them would smash it on the track just as a result of the lag alone. To be honest it wouldn't surprise me if a stock tune on any of those 3 wouldn't do the same.

Amazing car, even the regular Focus RS is very very fast. Ford have always had a particular brilliance when it comes to producing hot versions of their hatchback and saloon cars, probably no other manufacturer can really beat their pedigree. Ford have tended to avoid the classic mistake of many hot cars in that it is not about power and torque but about being able to put that power and torque down to the road and handle well.
Love it. Now they need to tune the thing properly! Turbo lag should not be a thing in a modern car. Just bring it in calmer and lower into the rev range.
Mapped by among the best in the business, I doubt the choice of turbo was theirs!

Nice video Pete, was wondering when you would get a Ford on your channel, a nice change! It's no 5-pot Mk2 RS, but the Mk3 is still a great car. With regards to interior, fully agree, Ford interiors have never been amazing (my Mk2 is a classic example) however it's how it drives and how it makes you feel that counts in my opinion; I've had mine for over 8 years now and it never ceases to make me smile. Personally I couldn't give two hoots what the interior is like or what gadgets is got. Less is more...

Its a damn good job you know the roads down there or with that power you definitely going brambling in the hedgerows!!! You of course have loads of experience in lots of different fast cars so not a problem. However who gets to buy this car is lucky to get something unique ( I like Unique!!!) but they better know what they are getting. Colour is loud to say the least but there`s not another like it I suspect. That`s special, and thanks once again for a brilliant review see you on the next one Peter.

Nice beast Pete & review, I couldn't hear a blow off valve BOV ? in changing gears, as wouldn't a BOV reduce the turbo lag problem with pressurising the intercooler quicker? Enjoy!

Hi Pedro. Love it, i'm a big Blue Oval fan! This is a bit like a modern day Escort Cosworth, lots of lag then all of a sudden you get pinned to your seat! Bit of a loud wrap for my liking but as you say, that can come off. Keep up the great work :-)

Pete,loving the vlog,having had ford xr3i s in the past,there was no turbo lag,have they possibly over done it on the Henley Rs,maybe that's the RS characteristics these days,

Good evening sir. Not sure on these versions as opposed to the previous couple of generation RS Focus cars. They don’t look as intense. With that said, stunning performance of course. Loved that RS 2000 ‘Eccy’ biiiiig time. I must be getting older as I like to have more metal around me now when it comes to the power.
Totally mad car. Get rid of the wrap and it would be a very tempting thing. Except when it comes to getting it insured.

I'm a big fan of the Focus RS but I don't think I'd have that one. The lag would probably get on my nerves and without meaning to sound like a stick in the mud, I'd say you don't NEED 500hp in a Focus RS. Also, I know it's subjective but I'm not a big fan of how that particular one sounds.

surely a twin scroll turbo would have been a better fit to combat lag? I wonder if these RS s will have any value in years to come as they are high spec but with no rally history but seem to hold good figures 2 nd hand at the moment?

The car looks great but I'm with you in that i prefer a more linear power delivery. That much boost must be fun in the wet. The interior is not much to write home about though. The RS needs a different interior. Another great video though.

A friend of mine was loaned this mad RS Focus as a courtesy car recently when he took his Mustang in to Hendy for some work! To say he was shocked when he saw, this was his courtesy car was an understatement. When he went to refuel, it was popping and farting so loudly, it startled someone at another pump nearly causing them an accident 🙄

My first two cars were a mk2 & mk3 Capri but only 1.6 engine, it was all I could afford to buy and insure 😅 but my dad and one of my brother had the mk1 with the 2 litre V4 engine which I thought was cool having a V engine, but they put the same engine in the Transit van 😂 my dream car was the 280 Brooklands or the Tickford Capri. 👍

Ist would great to have that car with ordinary looks (e.g. boring grey) and then flooring the pedal. That would take understatement to the next level - for instance when overtaking BMWs or Porsches on narrow winding roads 🤣

Firstly, when did it become fashionable for cars to backfire all the time? Popping exhausts sound shit. Secondly, there is no point in having more than 400hp on public roads except on the autobahn. Thirdly, nobody in their right mind is going to spend £55k on a Focus, however tuned it is. Old man rant over!
