I grow up with pretty bad anxiety, the X's over peoples eyes in this movie spoke to me on an intimate level. That is what public spaces are like for some of us. I've spent the last 8ish years working through it and have come far. I was about about 4 years into progress when I watched this movie. I have never seen a film where I connected with a protagonists so well. I never bullied a deaf girl, or anyone really, but his retreating into himself is what I did for the first 20+ years of my life. Makes me cry every time, beautiful film.

Such a great movie. Everyone should have to watch it. Causes a lot of soul searching and introspection.
On a side note, you can tell a lot about a person by how they react to movies. You...are a good person. I truly admire your good heart, your intelligence, and your empathy.

I can relate to Ishida a bit. If I think back to my school days, I remember certain incidents where I did or said something shitty...maybe not as bad as Ishida's bullying but I probably made some people feel bad or sad. Those incidents still haunt me sometime and I'd like to think that I am kind and thoughtful to everyone now. Either way, all you can do is continue forward and try to be a better person and leave a trail of happiness to make up for your past mistakes. Calling life quits just leaves your mistakes, so that is not the answer. I'm glad this movie addresses that.
Side note: I appreciate that you don't hide all your movie selections behind a paywall (e.g. Patreon). I follow dozens of reaction channels and I can't afford to subscribe to all of them. Plus...I can't really pick favorite channels because it is more about the video content than the people. Anyway...thanks for taking suggestions from comments. This movie is definitely one of my top requests. 🙂
Helpful suggestion: get a Ko-fi page so I can do a 1-time donation (buy you a "coffee"), which is way more doable for me.

34:42 Every Western viewer cries out "don't bother taking off your shoes." But it's almost IMPOSIBLE for any Japanese person to enter a house with shoes on. It's a deeply ingrained habit. Also, he has barely no idea about what she's doing there. Or just beginning to figure it out.

I'm so glad A Silent Voice is getting more and more recognition. Still watching your reaction as I'm typing, going from your reaction of Chernobyl to this feels a bit bizzare tho. 😅
    Edit:
I apologise in advance that this comment is gonna be long, but I really never get bored of talking about this film and It's always fascinating to hear someone else's take from their perspective. In essence, the main theme of the film is about forgiving, and most importantly forgiving yourself. Both Shouko and Shouya felt immense guilt about their past to the point where they'd rather unalive themselves, but they're able to overcome it and forgive themselves in the end. At first glance, people might think that it's a romance / love story with Shouko as the main character, but it turns out that it's about a journey to forgive oneself through Shouya's perspective. Oh and the soundtracks. Unlike most soundtracks which are there just to accompany the visuals, they're literally part of the film and storytelling. The goal is for Shouya to reach the 'light', and the final soundtrack before the credits is titled 'lit' because he did reach it. Both the visuals and music in this film is the embodiment of art.
I watched both this and 'Your Name' in the cinema multiple times, and while they're masterpieces in their own rights, 'A Silent Voice' hits very different for me. After watching it, I often woke up in the middle of the night, remembered the film, and then teared up. This happened in a course of a full week because I couldn't get it out of my head. The film is very poetic and there's just something so human and down to earth about it that I can't find anywhere else. I then proceeded to watch it in the cinema 3 more times to let everything sink in, lol.
Thank you for watching and reacting to this film, I'm really hoping that it continuously gains new audience.

You are absolutely right. It's a must-watch for everyone, I think. I watched it twice, because I wanted to show it to someone. Man, it was even harder the second time. Now I can't even tell someone about it or summarize the plot without tearing up. But it's a most important film.

Before I comment on the movie, let me just say this. Read the manga. While the movie does a great job of representing the core of the story, it does a horrible job of representing the side characters, especially Ueno. For example, when in elementary school, she was in love with Ishida, and the only time he gave her the attention she desired is when she helped bully Shoko. This is why, at the crosswalk, when they are older, she tries to reconnect with Ishida by doing the only thing he ever paid attention to her for. Ueno also only bullied Sahara because Sahara got praise for learning sign language when Ueno helped Shoko she only got in trouble for not doing a good enough job. This also led to part of the rift between Ueno and Shoko because instead of standing up and voicing her concerns about the teacher not making better accommodations for her, she just smiled and said she was sorry. Thus, the conversation in the ferris wheel. This also explains why she was so angry at the hospital. Ueno warned Shoko that her blaming herself for everything would end up hurting people around her. Which ultimately it did, namely Ishida, the person Ueno loves the most. Now, I'm not saying all this to excuse Ueno's actions. They are inexcusable, but you do get a better understanding of why a child and a teenager would act the way that she did. In the manga, the other characters get fleshed out just as well, and you really understand that all of the elementary students were victims of the teacher. That part of the manga can be hard to read because you realize the teacher not only allowed it to happen but actively promoted it.

So an interesting fact I decided to learn.
The reason they use "The Shape of Voice is because that's what the actual Kana (「こえのかたち」) translates to. The Kanji (「聲の形」) however translates into "A Silent Voice" proper.

I was SO excited when I saw you actually watched it :D Your name, Weathering with you, Suzume, and A Silent Voice are animes that stay with you - but this one is a special.
It takes up subjects that other movies never touch. The consequences of bullying. The form of "justice". The "do you deserve a second chance, after you have done horrible things"? And most importantly: can YOU forgive yourself, even if others already forgave you?
This movie never fails to make me cry and remind me to always try to be a better person.
I highly suggest you to watch Weathering with you and Suzume one day :D And Howl's moving castle with Spirited away. Even those people who aren't into anime movies are loving them, and with a good reason! (I say "I want to eat your pancreas" too, but that will destroy your soul for a few days maybe. Very beautiful but extremely sad one. I know the title sounds very wtf but the movie is about a dying girl's relationship with a passive, "idc about anything" type of guy who changes a lot. I can't tell anything more)

Your reactions are wonderful.!!!! I'd like to share some of my thoughts:
Why does Nishimiya accept Ishida? Her parents are divorced 🥀, her younger sister is ridiculed by classmates 😾, and she herself is isolated and ostracized at school. These painful experiences have led to her extreme self-deprecation; she blames everything on herself and never others.
For Nishimiya, it's impossible to hate Ishida; his bullying is not the source of her pain. What truly hurts her is her classmates' refusal to accept her, treating her as an outsider 🎭, and even causing her only friend, Sahara, to stop coming to school 🚶‍♀.
All her life, Nishimiya has had one wish: to fit into society like anyone else 🌍. Yet, despite years of effort, she hasn't made a single friend. What did she shout during her only confrontation with Ishida? "I'm trying too!" She has been striving to integrate into her class and society, but those around her have never given her a chance 🔒.
At one point, she even gave up, tossing her communication notebook into a sink and not picking it up again 🌊. This is the true source of Nishimiya's pain. In her eyes, Ishida was never a "bully" but someone who "couldn't make friends." Five years later, having reflected on his actions and learned sign language, he returned the notebook she had discarded and even offered his friendship, moving Nishimiya to tears 🌈.
This isn’t Nishimiya forgiving Ishida; it's her seeing hope in him-a hope for integration into society, a validation of her efforts since elementary school 🕊.
As the bullied, Ishida perhaps saved the bullied Nishimiya, but as a disabled person, no one truly understood her throughout the film. The sensitive and delicate Nishimiya, who blames everything on herself, eventually gathers her friends for Ishida’s sake 🛡. While she becomes stronger, it is still heartbreakingly sad 😿.
In the end, only Ishida truly transforms 🦋. The others do not fundamentally change. The bullies do not show any remorse; bystanders do not think they are at fault, and outsiders never really grasp the core of the issue 🔍. Only a few, who are involved in their own lives, come together after nearly losing Ishida, but the brief duration of the film isn't enough for them to truly change at the root.
All of this is so realistic, it’s hard to accept. 🎬

A interesting fact is that the movie title in Japanese would be “the shape of the voice”giving us a idea of how we can communicate in different ways, as in the first part we see how the teacher touch Shouko’s shoulder to tell her she can introduce herself to the class, writing in the book as Shouko did or with gestures as she later tried, all this ways were rejected by Shouya, 1.he didn’t touch her shoulder when he wanted her to look to him, he threw little stones, 2. He threw her notebook and 3. He threw her sand when she used the gestures to said “become friends” and answer with violence. This movie is a 10/10 has a lot of symbolisms that are beautiful,
Shoko not taking the notebook back when Shouya throw it, means she lost the hope of being part of the class, at her introduction to the class, she wrote that the notebook was her “voice”, once she didn’t took it, was a way to show us that she gave up and stop communicating with the world. But when in the bridge the notebook felt,She immediately jump for it, cause she wanted to communicate again and is shouya who found it and gave it to her, like saying that shouya is returning her voice….
Shouya using gestures when they reunited is a way to recover one of the amount shapes that voice has, later they recover another when Shouko use the phone to talk to Shouya(as a substitute of the notebook) and the final is the touch when he grab her in the balcony and thought how he didn’t really understand Shouko but finally after waking up and recovering all the different shapes of voice they understand each other….
Sorry this movie is too much…

Very good insight in all the characters. Especially that Ueno is not really the over the top villain. She is the blunt personality who cannot stand others not really speaking her mind. I'm not sure if it was in the movie, but for sure in the manga, Sahara learned to be more outgoing and outspoken as she developed a friendship with Ueno in high school.

Fun fact: the Piano music in this movie was recorded from the inside of the piano, so deaf people can feel the vibrations and feel the music...
Another annoying not so fun fact: this movie lost the oscars to Boss Baby... Freaking Boss freaking Baby!!!!! 🤬🤬🤬

Okay, I can recommend a much lighter and more warm anime series that also features a deaf MC(though with NO story connection to this movie).
    *A Sign of Affection*
I definitely recommend the subbed over the dubbed because the dub doesn't translate all the text that it should so you end up missing out on a good bit of context at times. So definitely watch the subbed version.
It is not nearly has heavy a watch as this movie is. More a slice-of-life romance that's very sweet, and a very good follow up to this movie.

There is a GREAT Anime series I can recommend - fun and funny and with a cool sci-fi edge, called THE MELANCHOLY OF HARUHI SUZUMIYA. There's two or three seasons and then a movie that caps it off.

Watch the movie through forgiveness and personal growth (even for the bullys). And you'll probably give it 5/5 stars. I think is more valuable for the actual zombie society the forgiveness and empathy capabilities than others topics in movies. I like Your name, but i think is better for this reasons A silent voice.

    Absolutely agree, a 4.5⭐️ movie based on a manga that’s a 6⭐️!
If you love this movie, the manga is a must read. The movie does a great job, but struggles to fit all the arcs and relationships, making it miss the mark just a little bit.
