Zhao served his purpose. He wasn't a super deep villain, but he largely existed to antagonize Zuko. I know people think he sucks, but let's be real. It's because you're comparing him to Zuko and Azula. Two of the best villains in fiction.
I like how Zuko for a second thought he'd be able to fight Katara on equal footing during a full moon at the most holy site for waterbenders, in a terrain where EVERYTHING IS MADE OF WATER.
I think understanding Zhau's motives throughout this whole season is important. He was a power hungry man who had to climb his way up the ranks to become general, he hated Zuko so much because he was born into royalty and in his opinion didn't deserve it. He wanted to kill the moon spirit to make a name of himself and become a "legend" in the fire nation.

Siege was lost, he stupidly tried to kill the moon and failed, and now he'll be saved by the disgraced traitor Prince. If Zhao had accepted the help, I do wonder how he'd be treated and viewed?
I've seen people mention this before and it made me pay attention to it: whenever Aang is in the Avatar State, he doesn't look like a kid, he looks like an adult. Probably because of his facial expression, he always looks furious

There’s a theory I once saw that speculated that the reason Yue needed the Moon Spirit to live when she was baby, was because she was supposed to be the next Avatar in the cycle. But since Aang was still technically alive, she lacked the Avatar Spirit she was meant to have, and so the Moon Spirit stepped in.
I don't remember where but I've also read a theory about how the spirits knows the future or at least their future and stuff, so one of the reason the moon spirit saved Yue is because it knows it'll die one day and Yue is a backup plan Potential Spoilers: The theory originated from Iroh for why he is so spiritual and can see spirits is because he been touched by a fox spirit and maybe he is in 'you know where' because he might be the fox's backup plan
To be fair, in the avatar-state, the knowledge and power, as well as the mentality of all the Avatars are infused into him. Knowing how ruthless some of them are, that was definitely mostly them.

Bruh, forget the comet, Zhao is the real problem and fire nation don't even realise why but only Iroh do. Without the moon everyone are doom. Fire benders can bend all they want but without the moon the planet will eventually fall forever. Zhao is trying to destroy everything. This first season is epic and special in this show as its the first challenge Aang had to do before focusing on fire lord Ozai.

Even when it is a new moon, aka there’s no moonlight, they can still waterbend though it is weakened. But when the moon spirit died, they couldn’t waterbend AT ALL. Which means the moon COMPLETELY VANISHED. If Yue hadn’t sacrificed herself, the current life on Earth would’ve been doomed. And so would future life on the planet.

The moon being a magical, spiritual body rather than a physical rock in the sky serves the narrative better, so that's the direction the writers chose. It's pretty clear in the episode that in the world of Avatar killing the Moon Spirit actually does make the moon disappear. In fiction, you don't have to adhere rigidly to the laws of physics of the real world if it doesn't serve the story, especially when it's set in a magical world that allows a lot more leeway for creativity in how that world works.

They didn't go out to the Fire Navy ships because they don't have a lot of waterbenders compared to the fleet that the Fire Nation possessed, and if they were to lose waterbenders fighting afar, they would have no means of defending once daybreak hit. The waterbenders were confident that they can hold off the Firebenders until the full moon hit, which they technically did if it weren't for Zhao killing the moon spirit, and to be fair, nobody could've predicted that. Even Roku didn't know the identity of the moon spirit.
true, although when you see how easily waterbenders freeze water, they could go out and freeze a large area, and ice and metal boats don't really go together. They could at least repair the damage done during the day, and maybe toughen their defences.
Personally, that really bothered me. Aang is literally a 12 year old kid. He hasn’t “known this for 100 years”. For him, the time jump was instantaneous. For him, all within the past year of his conscious life, he’s gone from thinking he was just a normal kid to finding out he’s the avatar (4 years earlier than most avatars get informed of that responsibility), then suddenly finding his entire nation is wiped out and everyone he knew and loved are dead, then he’s handed a task that no avatar has ever had to accomplish before (mastering 3 elements in a matter of months - most avatars take years to do so). Oh, and if he doesn’t accomplish this nearly impossible task, then the world is doomed - no pressure. The expectations placed on Aang are absolutely insane. The fact that he is not drowning in the trauma, and that he can find joy and show the strength he does despite everything is incredible. So yeah, if Aang wants to have an honest moment where he questions how he’s expected to handle all this on his own, I say that’s allowed, and I don’t really appreciate the attitude directed at him in that moment.

Katara had almost a month of training with Master Poophead (to use Aang's nickname for him). There are two reasons I love watching reaction videos. One is to relive when I first watched something. But also catch new details, sometimes on my own, sometimes through the insight of the reactors.
There is essentially 5 projects in the works that we know of. New live action series that re-tells the story of Avatar the last airbender. Then there is an animated film that is a direct sequel to the original series with Aang in his adult years. A new animated series covering the Earth Avatar that takes place 100 years after Legend of Korra. And 2 more animated films covering Zuko and one about Kyoshi.
Imagine just living in the northern tribe when this boy from the south shows up with the avatar, jumps straight into the dangerous mission, sits front lines on the assault, is hand picked to guard the princess. Sokka left that place a legend I'd bet

What's even worse is that Koh stole her face right before their wedding ceremony. Obviously this led to Kuruk trying to kill Koh. A little more lore on this is the explanation of why Koh was even able to steal a mortal's face in the mortal world. The reason is that during Yangchen's life she neglected the spirit world which caused different spirits to act erratically, one of them actually was able to enter the mortal world by creating pathways inbetween the spirit world and the mortal world. Presumably Koh used one of these pathways to enter the mortal world. This is also why Kuruk only lived to 33, his life force was continually drained waging a mostly unseen war against spirits.
Episode 17 is SOOOOO nostalgic for me I use to watch it on one of those car back seat mounted TV's when I was younger. I had to have seen it at least a dozen times as a kid.

I think the reason Katara didn't feel the effects of the moon is because it was more of a spiritual thing than a water bender thing. Aang is the bridge between the humans and spirits, and Yue was the moon spirit.
they are releasing a movie about aang and the gang 12 years after the show as well as a new series for the new earth avatar after korra all in 2025. and netflix is releasing a live action adaptation to the original series that releases sometime next year i believe
It’s very disappointing that only one person is new to this show right now and neither of the original 2 newcomers stayed or came back. This is the oomph that may have drastically changed their views of the show.
The Ocean Spirit goes on a rampage cuz they killed his partner the moon. Aang just helps it channel its rage as the Avatar. He is after all the bridge between the worlds.

I think the reason Katara didn't feel the effects of the moon is because it was more of a spiritual thing than a water bender thing. Aang is the bridge between the humans and spirits, and Yue was the moon spirit.
