      @@redfieldwong717There are 36 schools of airbending. To earn the tattoos an air bender needs to master all 36. Aang had mastered 35 of the 36 teachings and his invention of the air scooter, being an all new way of airbending, allowed him to be made an air bending master without having mastered the last teaching. Nevertheless Aang had mastered 35 of the 36 schools necessary.

      @@SWTobito0702isn't the theory that the last technique/teaching that he hadn't yet mastered was creating a vacuum?
      Tied to the theory that the way Gyatso killed an entire room full of firebenders, and himself, with no visible damage to them or him, was by pushing all the air from the room, creating a vacuum and suffocating them all
      With the way Gyatso is sitting when they find him, I can picture him sitting crossed legs on the floor, meditating and waiting. The firebenders all rush in to take him, and in that instant, without a pause in his meditation, all the air is gone and they all die together

    Some nice details and other trivia:
    When the Moon Spirit died, everything was grey, except for fire and Yue's eyes, showing the Moon Spirit was still alive inside her.
    The Ocean Spirit is push, the Moon Spirit is pull. When Aang was the Koizilla he only used push to waterbend.
    Katara couldn't heal the Moon Spirit because there was no Waterbending and therefore no healing...
    The Ocean Spirit was the one who took Zhao, Aang was already out of the Avatar State. The Ocean Spirit used it's last bit of energy to take revenge on Zhao
    Zuko really just asked Katara for a rematch, you know, a Waterbender... In the middle of a snowy landscape... DURING A FULL MOON
    Yue's father knew this day would come, so it is my opinion he saw Yue and Sokka liked each other and therefore asked Sokka to protect her, because he knew Yue would die soon.

      @@lanafrank6086 to be fair, its a kids show in a sense that it was on nickelodeon. But its meant for people of all ages. What it did was not treat kids as complete dumbasses who dont know how to think for themselves. It did a very good job at portraying “adult” topics and framing it in a way children could understand and learn from. Which also means it didnt talk down to children, but allowed the parents to watch along and not feel like they were watching a boring show only aimed at toddlers and kids under 10. Like look at SpongeBob for instance, its a silly show but back in the earlier days of the show they were throwing a lot of stuff for the parents that may have been watching along with their kids. I think nick in the early to mid 2000s was incredibly good at being entertaining for all age demographics.

    ATLA was a show made for kids, but it's certainly not a "kids' show". It reminds me of a quote from Roger Ebert's review of Spirited Away:
    "Miyazaki says he made the film specifically for 10-year-old girls. That is why it plays so powerfully for adult viewers. Movies made for "everybody" are actually made for nobody in particular. Movies about specific characters in a detailed world are spellbinding because they make no attempt to cater to us; they are defiantly, triumphantly, themselves."
    ATLA is the same thing. It doesn't shy away from difficult topics, but the way those topics were addressed was easily digestible for kids. And that's what makes it so powerful.

    16:32 if you remember in S1 Ep 3 iroh said “so this is how the great commander Zhou acts in defeat, disgraceful.” The avatar escaped his capture not because of an army, but by a loan warrior without bending. Then Zhou burned all his river boats without restraint. Culminating to now, where he finally accepts defeat. Or as he said to Zuko a few moments ago, accepted his failure.

    I have watched Avatar at least five times all the way through over the years. But i've only _just now_ realized that Aang's kaiju form only happened because the ocean wasn't being pushed back by the moon spirit anymore! I have always wondered why it never came back later on. It can't!

  • @Darkstar72SR
    @Darkstar72SR Рік тому +4

    Aang’s arrows indicate a mastery over airbending. It’s also been stated that the Avatar must learn bending according to the Avatar cycle. Since Aang is an Air Nomad that would be: water, earth then fire. He of course would learn his own element first since it’s the one he has an affinity for.

    • @cctomcat321
      @cctomcat321 Рік тому

      But he technically learns fire before earth... He just refuses to practice or use it, anymore. So he doesn't _have_ to learn them in order... because he didn't. And they never brought it up saying, "no, I have to find an Earthbending Master, first", or whatever.
      It may be tradition or recommended, but it isn't a necessity in order to "unlock" the ability to bend the next element.
      It's not explicit rules, I guess.

    • @brewdaly1873
      @brewdaly1873 Рік тому +1

      @@cctomcat321 probably swap out "learn" for "master." Jeong Jeong specifically said he wasn't ready to learn fire because he hadn't mastered water and earth, and the one time we see Aang try to firebend early it goes terribly wrong. Korra knew how to bend every element as a toddler, but she still had to take time to actually learn, or master, each element. It's like the difference between having the ability to punch and actually knowing how to throw a punch.

    • @Darkstar72SR
      @Darkstar72SR Рік тому +1

      @@cctomcat321 ya think half an afternoon of instruction is “learning” firebending? And some Avatars stumble upon the other elements by accident. A certain water tribe girl comes to mind. ;-)

    • @Darkstar72SR
      @Darkstar72SR Рік тому +1

      I also feel that Jeong Jeong has a jaded view of fire and firebending. How it’s only good for destruction. A future character has a distinctly different take on things.

    • @cctomcat321
      @cctomcat321 Рік тому

      @Bobby Clarkston ...it wasn't one afternoon, it was multiple days. Stance and breath. Patience and control. The basics. And, yes... Katarra has been a Waterbender from episode 1. And I haven't watched most of Korra because it's mid, but even I know she had the first 3 elements aside from air because plot, they didn't want to redo Aang's story. Either way, you kinda made my point for me. Had plot not gotten in the way, Aang would've learned firebending before earth, which is my entire point that an order might be tradition, but it isn't necessary to unlock each subsequent element. If Aang so chooses, he could firebend. He isn't a master, by any means, but he has more than Katarra had in terms of originally teaching him waterbending...
      So, again, they don't _have_ to learn in any specific order. That's not how it works. But it is recommended for *Mastery* over the elements. Aang doesn't have the self control, because he's yet to learn some of that in life, and other parts in earthbending. Which is why we're talking about bending, not ability to do or what would be considered "mastery".

    This reaction and the way you cut and reacted to it... reminded me one aspect that brought Avatar The Last Airbender to legendary level of greatness that no other American animated series has ever done. The dialog is witty, the pacing and storytelling never overstays its welcome, the characters are perfectly balanced and written.. but the one thing that elevates avatar above all else - is its beauty. I was reminded here how beautiful Yue's story was that it can bring tears to people of all ages even after only knowing the character for 3 episodes.
    It makes me so sad that the head writer(s) Aaron Ehasz and wife, Elizabeth Ehasz (who were the actual true masterminds behind all the genius writing) left after Avatar the last airbender and the sequel decayed into what it did, devoid of the same magical intrigue and beauty.

    16:43: Think about it for a second. What do you think would have happened if Zhao went back to the Fire Nation and then tried to explain that on his very first voyage as an admiral, not only did he lose, but he also lost dozens of warships along with thousands of soldiers.
    The Fire Nation is not only an honor driven society, but it is also extremely militaristic. Being demoted or dishonored would have been the least of Zhao's concerns.
