I wouldn't say that it is the only similar game. The battle for middle earth games and rise of legends touched on similar gameplay and themes. total war warhammer is only thematically similar and based on thematic similarities you could also include warcraft 3, spellforce and some others.
It was a great campeign, in a way it demonstrated HOW to make a good RTS campeignneven if it was at times rather bland. The music, everything, just firts perfectly into this tellable, yet cheesy, story.
I can't understand why he dislikes characters, from my older brother Arkantos to my gf Reinleif and the boi Eitri and Chiron the CHAD and Gargarensis the terrifying psychopath 👌 They meant a lot to me as a kid !
Thanks for the review! Great to see some love for Age of Mythology. Some personal options on the campaigns. I personally think that the Fall of Trident campaign (Arkantos' story) is actually great and it is one of my favourite RTS campaigns ever. It truly feels like a Greek epic but intertwined with other mythologies. All the mythological/historical characters are done justice (I just love how you get to see and play with or against heroes from various myths), the original heroes have their unique personality and the missions have a great sense of scale (sieges actually feel like sieges and not 10 units capturing an entire town). Also, I feel the scenarios were pretty varied and, if nothing else, did not feel like simple skirmishes. Besides some wonky voice acting (and only at times), I really can't think of another substantial criticism. Honestly, I would probably purchase a remaster/definite edition even if just to replay it again even without doing much else.
I definitely agree with that. Even after having played multiple amazing games, both RTS and not, I still look very fondly upon the AoM campaign and still enjoy it whenever I replay it. I absolutely adored both main campaigns and I wish there was more of it, that isn't Tales of the Dragon. As a bonus, I also loved the little descriptions they had for EVERYTHING if you looked in the info page, from just regular old normal pig info to descriptions of myth units with scientific names and a whole bunch of lore.
Also it is so funny at times! From the sarcastic remarks between the characters to entire group being turned to pigs (thanks Circe), I laugh quite a few times during the story. I especially love the moment where Arkantos and Odysseus coming up with the idea of the Trojan horse and Ajax being like "Will it fight?", and in unison Arkantos and Odysseus turn their heads to look at him lol (that and Agamemnon's pink helmet feathers!)
I still remember that I dreamt of having a massive army with colossus vanguard against the enemies on battlefield... Well, I am hearing that AoM probably has much promising future than a simple Definitive Edition, and after watching AoE4 trailer, I'm hoping that my childhood fantasy may come true.

The Chinese DLC is ok. It feels more like a mod than a studio made add-on though, which if you look back through all the developer posts before it came out... it basically is a mod because of how hard the engine is to work with.
Personally I was pretty disappointed, it felt too cheap, too generic, too much like a player made mod. I think the DLC actually makes the game worse. And that's coming from someone who regularly buys DLC's
@@reistje If i know how terrible that DLC is i wouldn't waste my money on it. The extended edition is good enough. The extra units added in the DLC is bs. I know AOM has some relation with AOE but that DLC is clearly just AOE theme put into AOM. It messed up the flavor of AOM in a bad way.
I played this game when I was 12 years old, and it made me really happy, the setting, the characters, the aesthetics, the music, the campaign is very good and it also had a lot of information about the history and mythology. beautiful game. I hope they release a definitive edition, and a sequel :)
You can play extended edition. I got back into it after picking up the game at 12 and playing for a couple years. I just returned this summer thanks to a tournament video I came across. It has been fun.
It still saddens me that this game got virtually left behind while everyone slobbers all over AOE2. I'm glad it gets some recognition, even if it isn't by much. Maybe it was the less than stellar remaster and the disastrous final expansion, but I dont know, I just wish it were bigger - and had more of a scene. Its just more fun when every faction isn't exactly the same with a few bits swapped in and out. I would've focused more on the asymmetrical aspect of the factions - how different the resource gathering, pop management, structure building and research all are between the faction. To some players like myself, this is what keeps the game interesting, while AOE2 feels like a samey snoozefest. You missed out on that DLC though. Totally worth it on sale. Most of the campaign is unbelievably bad to the point of comedy. The voice acting, awful scripting, attempts at matching the original game's ambitions, it's great. The chinese faction could've been worse too... slightly...
It was announced that thre ill be an AoM DE after AoE 4 is released. So there is a lot of time left to wait, but maybe end of this year or next year i still believe there will be an AoM DE
Did you guys play AoM in Voobly servers? That was a golden era. I love the music, I would even go out and take walks with the OST in my MP3 device. The game was perfect for me. I was so obsessed with the Norse Mythology, to the point I was thinking to learn a second language like Norwegian or Swedish. After meditating it I decided to choose English instead. The game also helped me to learn the language, after many years I was be able to move in a country where everyone speaks English ! This game will always have a place in my heart.
Bro I'm so sad watching this. Nostalgia games hold such a place in my heart. Every weekend I used to go down to my grandad's house. He used to have an old computer that could run Age of empires, populas, alien nations, DK2. So we used to play them together. He's been gone now for about 6 years but man this sort of stuff brings back way more than just nostalgia for games.
I wanted to Major in Classical Civilization because of this game. Took it for A-Levels around it's release, but the University I ended up going to in the US didn't offer it, so now I have a History Degree, probably thanks to Age of Empires II. I ended up moving towards contemporary multilateralism career wise, so thank the gods for AOE.
Custom scenarios is the best part: one could say that AoE2 have a ton of custom maps, but are just a tiny tiny tiny bit compared to AoM. The new mechanics allow for many fun scenarios, I specially loved Olympics and Tiny maps. Also, the campaign is the MOST ICONIC of all, at the same level of the ones of Age of Kings!
I know i am very biased because i played it as a kid, but i absolutely love the campaign and how it takes you through all these different places and factions and scenarios. And it has a lot of variation of missions
Even though UA-cam is somewhat over saturated with gaming content, I still think your style, content and approach will have an impact. I can definitely see this channel growing a lot coming months. (I, for one, already subscribed.)
@Talion Ranger The OP didn't say there's anything wrong with it, but too much of the same thing (that's what oversaturated means). Too many guys doing the same type of content.
I don't know how prominent it was at the time. However one thing I always apreciated was how the music felt dynamic. Every time you attacked a fortress or a city center, the music would become epic and unique. My other experiences with it are in BFME and Total War, so I can't tell whether other franchises have done the same.
I owe all my knowledge of history, mythology, geography and philosophy to this game, I was 7 when it showed me how intriguing and amazing these things are. Ironically, I really suck at it when playing online, I was more interested in the campaign and in building little cities and armies as a kid.
The story is great. The best campaign in the franchise in my opinion. The probem is its scenarios: after the troy part, it becomes monotonous "build a base and destroy the enemy". Unlike in aoe2 and aoe3 where you have to do other things like recruiting other factions, defending, succeeding in setting up a trade route, converting units or buildings, taking over spots, etc.
I really liked the campaign, maybe because i played it as a child but it gave me the same feeling I had when I read about the greek heroes and gods for the first times. I mean, everyone knows about athena, zeus, achilles or heracles, but we all have that day when we decide to look a little deeper in their stories and read for the first time his many stories and be amazed. AOM campaign gave me that feeling. I knew about the story of atlantis and most of the characters present, but its original twist gave me the need to know more and complete it
The campaigns blew my mind. I think they were super interesting and fun. Especially for the time. I was younger as well, sure. But I have super fond memories.
My buddies and I still play AoM to this day. It's a staple of the games we play. To me, it'll always be a timeless game that I can go back to no matter how aged it may be to others. It's this game the made me grow to love ancient mythologies and history.
This game was perfect, it taught and laid the foundation of mythology for me and after that I've never stopped reading, watching and learning mythology of different cultures and now I love to pass the knowledge.
When I played through the extended edition, the very first thing I noticed that was a notable change was that you could select more than 30 units within a group. I had very fond memories of this game because it was a really good entry point into the RTS genre for me back then.
@@Zade_95 I think it's worth getting it only on sale. It spices up the game just enough. However, the campaign is pure garbage and many of the units are reskinned versions of existing units or of each other. The Titan also looks like shit.
AoM is one of my favorite games from childhood. It is still very special to me today and I always prefered it over AoE 2 (which I still love very much) even though I played AoE 2 before AoM. Always loved the campaign and its characters, and spent some amazing time online back then, with all the amazing scenarios created by talented people. Cannibal survival, Build your Titan, Sumo-minotaur, Mutation, Cats and mouse, Gods are watching, RPG... There was even a Sim simulator for 6 hours long games ! So much amazing creators.
I remember playing this game and Rome total war way back in the days when they came out. They both taught me history and ancient mythology, esp AoM. I disagree with the campaign being a 12year old kid playing this it was so awesome esp for it's time AoM had its spot at one of the best RTS for it's time, they were competing with huge titles such as Cossacks, Starcraft and Warcraft.. I've played Cossacks back to war, AoE2, Starcraft 1, Warcraft 1-3, CaC Red alert 1-2 back in the days and none of theese games can be compared to the campaign and story in AoM exept Wc3 wich really brought the RTS genre to the next level.
@@kaldrdoombringer7246 story worse than twilight, i mean it. balancing out the window. most of the sounds are legit copied from other units that were already in the game. if you play cs the ai on one of the new maps, they dont know how to attack (that might have been fixed). its even annoying that in the main menu they implemented their own shitty main menu song. i could go on. but you know... shhhhhh ;)
That brought back memories. I enjoyed Age of Mythology given I love history and the different cultures. The music was nice to listen to and the creatures you could get were fun.
I'd say the original format of the game isn't as good as I thought it was as a kid, however, the Steam rerelease made some major improvements that I personally really appreciate. Even so, the game naturally doesn't quite hold up. But it's one of few older titles that still offers a fun experience. Especially if you play the campaign. Though I do think the remake is certainly warranted. But out of all the games installed on my pc and playstation, AoM is the oldest that I still find fun to play.
The problem with the Chinese release was that they introduced bugs that affected the entire game. Want to click on the red exclamation mark on the unit box? Crash to desktop. Random stuff popping up in your production box in the lower left? Yeah you have to deal with it. Random unit animations breaking? Lighting changes from the eclipse god power causing the world to end? Yeah. I understand that they have patched many of these issues out, but for the love of God it was almost unplayable, and many glitches can still be identified that weren't present in the disk set. It feels like the QA for a freaking microsoft team was non-existent
As far as I know the studio which updated Age of Empire 1,2 and 3 want to redo Age of Mythology. Someone asked them (thankfully) if they did forget AoM or if they will do also an update. And they responded something like: no we didn’t forget AoM but it won’t be just an update like AoE series we have planned something different. So fingers crossed we get a hole rework or ground up update of this (imo amazing) series. Which shouldn’t have had part 2 and 3 already years ago. But at least it gets a special treatment and we can only hope it gets the attention and love its deserve. Maybe we will hear some new during this year (hopefully). Just wanted to leave this quick news here.
Tale of the dragon is not worth it for the campaign if that's your jam but it's fun to add if you play a lot of multiplayer because it adds some diversity if you've been playing the game for 18 years now

They fixed a lot of the game on the last few patchs, it had serious problems before, like workers and bullcarts getting stuck inside gold mines Can`t fix tale of the dragon thou
Sure you can. Pull a AOE2 and rewrite the campaign. They did that for several of their campaigns and honestly they got better, even if I enjoyed the originals.
Okay, I'm extremely late to the party, but I didn't know this could be played on Steam. On the bright side at least, I know what I'm doing with my week now. ^_^
My biggest problem with these early 3D RTS titles is that the unit-to-map/building/tree scale is stupid. The unites are massive, while the geography/buildings/trees are tiny in comparison. Warcraft 3 is the worst offender, but AoM is also quite bad. AoE2 is so much less offensive in this regard and thus aged way better.
I could agree about the houses (even though it's not THAT bad/I've seen way worse... *cough* Cossacks *cough* ) But the trees !?! Just look at the game... AoM is the least offensive of any Age of game in that regard (yes, including AoE2, even without the mod that reduces trees sizes that all the high level players use)
AOE2 was my first RTS game but AOM stole my heart. I never really got into AOE3 but I've put over 100hrs into AOE4 so far. Currently watching this vid to remind myself of AOM and decide if I want to play more of it.

My impressions from revisiting this game recently: - Campaign: Great! Very good, especially the OG one. - Gameplay: Pretty good, but worse than AOE 2 and 3. - Unit pathing: Trash - Controlls: Pretty bad - Music: Great - PvP: Good, but still worse than the AOE games Overall it's still a solid game, but I believe the campaign was the best part of it. I still think AOE 2 and 3 are better games overall, but if I revisit Age of Mythology, it's because of the campaign!

@@RustingPeace No, not really. If I wanted to just play a strategy game set in the classical period, I could play RTW, or heck, even Praetorians. For medieval, there are a lot of options. For mythology however...
I wouldn't say that it is the only similar game. The battle for middle earth games and rise of legends touched on similar gameplay and themes. total war warhammer is only thematically similar and based on thematic similarities you could also include warcraft 3, spellforce and some others.
To some extent, I see Titan Quest as the CRPG counterpart to AOM.

The campaign was incredible, I loved it
I would very much disagree about the quality of the campaign
I think the cheesyness adds to it’s charm
the campain was one of the best parts
Its better than the campaign of AoE3.

The only thing that annoyed me was the population limit having less than 200 while having military units costing 2 to 5 pop space.
That's why it didn't grow as much as AOE. Having to fight over settlements and infinite gold trade killed the game for me. Story mode is fun though.
There was a mod to break that limit to infinite but THE ENEMY KEPT MAKING HUNDREDS OF UNITS. My game crashed when I gave the enemy a visit lmfao
I still remember that I dreamt of having a massive army with colossus vanguard against the enemies on battlefield...
Well, I am hearing that AoM probably has much promising future than a simple Definitive Edition, and after watching AoE4 trailer, I'm hoping that my childhood fantasy may come true.
@@MrREAPERsz the TC mecanic in Aom makes the game far more complex that the aoe TC mecanic, cause they are always on strategic places and fight for them I really fun.
And the gold mecanic makes the game long as far as you want, I had competitive games that last like 1 and a half hour and never stop being so fun and hard to play.
Watch a Matreuss game or a Boit video and youll see what im taking about
Because of CPU/RAM limitation for that times.....Try to create 6 vs 6 with middle battle and play deathmach, and wait for fight ....fps will drop to 15 or less. You can not play normaly 6 v6 on old desktop pc from 2000s
The Chinese DLC is ok. It feels more like a mod than a studio made add-on though, which if you look back through all the developer posts before it came out... it basically is a mod because of how hard the engine is to work with.
The campaing doesn't work in chinese gameplay. I was playing a level and the AI was spawning hundreds of units. It made impossible...
The enemy mainland was fully occupied with units. This is real...
Wasn't it made by some random Chinese developer?
The chinese faction could've been worse too... slightly...
Hopefully AoM get's it's own definitve edition, now that all AoE games are done :)
You haven't seen the "Rise of Empires" commercial?
It was one of the ads I got on this video.

Some of the campaign missions were so much fun that I would replay those rather than multiplayer because they were so satisfying
Grave dug
The AOM custom map making community back in the day was second to none. Something AoE2 has always been missing
Absolutely loved both the original and Atlantan campaign. I found Arkantos’ journey to be epic and entertaining
We need AoM Definitive Edition!!

Ironically I came across a video from 5 years ago wherein the guy said "reviewing games in UA-cam is dead."
Thanks mate - appreciate it!
@@Zade_95 we appreciate you! you're my goto guy for in-depth, entertaining, funny and smart RTS talk. Amazing content!
@Talion Ranger The OP didn't say there's anything wrong with it, but too much of the same thing (that's what oversaturated means). Too many guys doing the same type of content.
@Talion Ranger Still doesn't mean what you think it means.
I don't know how prominent it was at the time. However one thing I always apreciated was how the music felt dynamic.
Every time you attacked a fortress or a city center, the music would become epic and unique.
My other experiences with it are in BFME and Total War, so I can't tell whether other franchises have done the same.
Stronghold does a similar thing - makes it feel very alive
I would give a kidney for HD version of the ilustrations of the gods, especialy the titans, Theia Ouranos and Hyperon look so majestic.
I owe all my knowledge of history, mythology, geography and philosophy to this game, I was 7 when it showed me how intriguing and amazing these things are. Ironically, I really suck at it when playing online, I was more interested in the campaign and in building little cities and armies as a kid.
You just described me in your comment as well!
Strangely enough, the story of the campaign was one of the biggest selling points for me. I really enjoyed it.
AoM campaign and WC3 campaign is my entire childhood. Heroes of might and magic 3 aswell
Thank you algorithm.
This Game has such a great OST, "Eat your potatoes" is my favorite. Great video man.
I greatly enjoy the title theme "A cat named Mittens".
thank you! praise the algo
The good old Majestic AoM❤:')
And dude, you are so wrong about the campaing!!!! I still enjoy going through it once a year!
Well, it can't be "as good as you remember" if you never stopped playin'!

Sure you can. Pull a AOE2 and rewrite the campaign. They did that for several of their campaigns and honestly they got better, even if I enjoyed the originals.

Yes. It is. It’s amazing. I got back into it recently and am making scenarios and replaying the campaign and I bought it for two of my best friends.
Yeah scale in 3d rts's used to annoy me so much lol. Empire Earth 2 was particularly bad
I could agree about the houses (even though it's not THAT bad/I've seen way worse... *cough* Cossacks *cough* )
But the trees !?! Just look at the game... AoM is the least offensive of any Age of game in that regard (yes, including AoE2, even without the mod that reduces trees sizes that all the high level players use)
I'm glad your views are decent but you legit deserve 9x subs
