- While filming Porgy & Bess, a 9 year turbulent romance began between Sidney Poitier & Diahann Carroll. It came with divorce, lies, empty promises, and a brief engagement (if you'd call it that.)

"The door opened, he stepped inside, my life changed" is the first line of chapter 4 in the autobiography of Diahann Carroll. She didn't lie when you read about her tumultuous relationship with my favorite actor Sir Sidney Poitier, who was a typical, young ambitious man got married and became a father much too soon. His autobiography is just as interesting and emotionally damaging to his daughters as Diahann's only child. The most important lesson to all is don't marry and have children if you want to fool around with others. Protect your kids and certainly protect your heart because both will break.
It was definitely a lesson learned on both sides. Many today find themselves in relationships just like this, so it was eye-opening to learn of such a romance in such detail.
Diahnne treated Monty Horribly
Wow - I had no idea Poitier was such a crummy human being!
He was a human, flawed like we all are.
No, just young and stupid
They were both young and made a mistake, we are not perfect, we are all human. We can appreciate their art, they have both contributed greatly to films, they are our king and queen. rest in peace to both! I love them both deeply! They are my inspiration as an actress!
He was horrible and she was too gorgeous and successful to have such low self esteem!!
She was horrible as well
I love Sidney Poitier pioneer but in this day age we would say he ain't sh*t for that
I have never liked Sidney Poitier all because of the way he treated Diahann. Bastard.
