  • Sammy Davis, Jr., in 1976, was on the Diahann Carroll TV show and in this clip he did some tap dancing and then sang a duet from Porgy and Bess with the beautiful Diahann Carroll. Sammy Davis Jr. is one of the greatest entertainers in the history of show business, being able to sing, dance, act, play instruments and be funny as well. In Arthur Silber's book, Sammy Davis, Jr. Me and My Shadow, he explores the amazing career and inside feelings of a many who only wanted the freedom to pursue his art form. Sammy Davis, Jr. broke many color barriers in Las Vegas and New York City well before the big gains were made in the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, something he doesn't get credit for.
For more info about Sammy Davis, Jr. go to www.sammysbook.com
About Sammy Davis, Jr: Me and My Shadow by Arthur Silber, Jr.
Read the definitive biography about one of the greatest entertainers in history and all the great celebrities he met and mingled with along the way. For over 23 years, beginning in 1949, Arthur Silber Jr. and Sammy Davis Jr. were practically inseparable. They were not only business partners but the closest of friends. As Sammy began to carve out his niche as a solo star, they celebrated the triumphs, suffered the insults and braved the dangers in a world about to go through dramatic changes.
From Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack to Kim Novak and Eddie Cantor, throughout the pages of this book you will read stories never told, see pictures never seen by the public, and get the real story from one who lived it with Sammy Davis Jr. New York, Las Vegas, London and all places in between are visited as Sammy and Arthur make a journey of personal and professional discovery in the midst of fun, great and scary times as millions come to fully appreciate the absolutely mind blowing talent of a man now popularly recognized by just one word, Sammy.
    About Arthur Silber, Jr:
My first big professional break came when I was twenty and Sammy Davis Jr. hired me as his personal assistant and lighting director, a position I remained in for over twenty-two years. It would be impossible to measure everything I learned from Sammy about show business.
He was the consummate professional, a genius at his craft. During that time we became business partners and formed Samart Enterprises, which I still own to this day.
Some of the highlights of my years with Sammy were when I staged and produced his portions of three Royal Command Performances.
The first was for Queen Elizabeth in London 1960. Then, in 1961 I staged and produced Sammy's portion of Princess Grace Rainier Red Cross Gala in Monaco for their Royal Family, and finally, a performance for England's Queen Mother. Over the years I produced and co-produced many of Sammy's shows including Englandís Best TV Show of the year, 1961, Sammy Meets The British, and the following year Sammy Meets Girls. For eleven years I was company manager, production manager and lighting director for the Lettermen during the height of their popularity.
Since leaving the Lettermen twenty-two years ago I have been company manager, production manager and lighting designer and director for Vikki Carr. A few of the highlights of my years with Vikki have been as production design and lighting director of an NBC special, A Very Special Evening With Vikki Carr (that won the IRIS Award in 1979), the UNICEF All Children Show in Vienna, Austria and last, but certainly not least, production design of her shows for Presidents Jerry Ford, Jimmy Carter and a special show for President Reagan.
At the same time I have worked in one or more of these capacities for Bob Hope, Bill Cosby, Charo, Debbie Reynolds, Sammy Davis Jr., Danny Thomas, and Marco Antonio Muniz (known as the Bing Crosby of Mexico), to name a few. To date I continue to work for Vikki Carr as well as some of the biggest and most famous Mariachi groups in the world, including Mariachi Sol de Mexico, Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, Mariachi Cobre, and Mariachi Vargas.

@PolishViking Chris Brown and Usher? Seriously? Why would you name them? What's the connection other than race? Huh? Have you not heard of 6 time Tony winner, Audra McDonald, Emmy winner and Tony winner, Billy Porter, Oscar winner, Jennifer Hudson or Norm Lewis? Many of today's performers fit into the slots left open by Carroll and Davis.

      Jhonni,
During that period, people studied music, diction, etc so that they were true professionals that happened to have talent. Moreover her makeup was well placed and not over done. She looked natural and dressed in such a way that was not overly provocative. That is why this video that was probably done in the 1970's looks so current. By the way many women and men looked and dressed beautifully. TV variety shows rules. Today no one wants to look at the crap on tv or look at the so called entertainers. They are to raunchy, ignorant and disgusting for my taste.

Ronald McFondle But they could still
Do variety shows with the music of today and mix it up. I don't understand why someone doesn't just start up the variety genre again and modernise it. Things cannot always stay the same but why not innovate? Instead did just producing game shows and a factor and all of those shows which are essentially just game shows where people "win"'something. In the days of Dihann Carroll here, they were doing it just simply to entertain us. No one was "winning" - that's the main difference. The variety show ended once people had to start to always win prizes for being "the best singer or apartment block or losing the most weight or designing something etc etc." it's boring. Please just bring back sheer entertainment.

Not true. Hazel Scott, an African American jazz pianist and singer had her own show in 1950; the American sponsors pulled the successful show because whites, racists in certain states complained. Hazel was also the first African American to WIN a lawsuit against a restaurant in Washington State, in the Pacific Northwest, which REFUSED to serve her and her band members when they came in for meals on the road. Hazel REFUSED to perform in segregated venues and was escorted from the stage in Texas when she refused to play when she found the audience separated by race. Hazel Scott was married to Adam Clayton Powell, , they divorced in 1960, after 15 years of marriage. Hazel Scott has one son with Adam Clayton Powell; She died of cancer at 61 years old in 1981 in Mt. Sinai Hospital in NYC. She is buried in Flushing Cemetery near the plots of the Great Satchmo, Louis Armstrong, and the Birth of Cool trumpet player, Dizzy Guillespie, and Great Saxophone player, Johnny Hodges, who played with Duke Ellington's Band amongst others.

Can't think of which is a bigger embarrassment to her legacy; being married to VIc Damone or appearing in those dumb ass Dead Pool movies.

Diahnne Carroll is one of the last of the true GREAT legends left. Complete class, real TALENT not like what we have now where almost every other song is about sex and bad language... and I'm talking about the female singers. Hardly anyone sings anymore about love.. real love and relationships. This right here is 2 great legends giving us just a small sample of what they can do and that alone is worth 10, 20, 30 times of what we have now.

They were both so good! I don't think either were really appreciated while they were here, but in light of what we have now, we see that these two were two of the greatest entertainers who ever graced night clubs, records, TV and Broadway of the 20th Century. Miss you both!

Marsha Warfield played Dian Carrol in a Julia remake. Gary Coleman played Cory. It was a bit more "URBAN" themed. Gratuitous uses of the " M F' word. As well as repeated uses of the "N" word.
