    Thanks so much for mentioning drying off in the shower - a place already prepared for wetness. I am 76 and when I was a kid my Mom taught us to "drip off" with our wrung out wash cloth before stepping out of the tub. It captured all the excess water and our towel did not become soggy. We essentially stepped out of the tub already dry. When I eventually met people who left a soggy mess of wet foot prints outside the tub and very wet towels, my kid brain was shocked. Why go from a waterproof surface wet?
    I enjoy and use as many of your suggestions as possible. Thank you so much.

    In our household we have always dried off in the shower before stepping on to the bath mat. I find washing them every Friday ensures they get a regular wash. I also have a non-slip mat inside the shower area, which after a good rinse goes in the dishwasher, also every Friday. I find a designated day helps to get the job done regularly.

    I treat mine in the same way as the towels (they're not rubber-backed). I don't know if this works for a top loading machine, they tend not to be a thing here, but I was advised by our washing machine retailer to do a potentially unbalanced load with a very low spin speed setting, then do a normal speed spin afterwards. The first spin removes most of the water that leads to unbalancing (you can always open the door to redistribute if necessary).

    I'm weird, but, I don't want what I call, "feet germs" mixed in with my other stuff, so, if I have a towel I use sometimes instead of a bathmat, or a bathmat, I always wash them by themselves so not to contaminate the other towels with "feet germs". I'm just really weird about that kind of stuff. But, I watched this out of curiosity, and while I did learn new things, I thought, proudly to myself, I'm already doing what a professional is doing and I didn't need anyone to tell me!! But, thank you for filling me in on stuff I didn't know, like vacuuming before washing. I usually just went outside and gave it a few fierce shakes outside and then washed, but, I'll vacuum from now on.

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  2 роки тому +4

      LOL. Yes, you already had it right. And shaking it out also works, I just find that in most homes we are cleaning we have a vacuum two feet away, and it saves us a trip outside. Thanks for the true confession about the "feet germs" I really enjoyed that. 👏

      I do this too for the exact reasons! I look at them and think Feet! Ewww, so I usually soak my laundry before washing. I put the bath mats in a plastic container separately and soak with a laundry sanitizer. bath mats are then washed in the machine with shower curtains and a few towels all previously soaked and sanitized.

    Off topic question: Could you suggest anything to put in the washing machine for cleaning towels saturated in food oils? Not stains, just the oil buildup.
    In the massage industry the towels get saturated in coconut oil, we put dish soap into the washing machine but I know this isn't advised.

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  2 роки тому +2

      Yes, 1/4 to 1/2 cup of white vinegar in the fabric softener tray. The vinegar is fantastic at cutting the oils and will leave your towels odor free and fluffy. Keep me posted and let me know if this resolves your issue. :-)

    Our shower is not big enough to dry in. I would break the shower glass knocking it with my elbows & head, lol. Cleaning it is a challenge in a small space.
    Instead I have a thick bath mat on the floor (foam, toggle, or tufted etc) but on top I set a foot towel (same material as bath towel). I hang the foot towel over the rail & the thick bath mat (if damp) I dry it out on the balcony, in the sun. Foot towels are so quick to dry too.

      According to a A Clean Bee website, towels can become yellow when they are washed in too much detergent, the water has mineral deposits, the white towels were washed with other colors, or too much chlorine bleach was added to the wash. Use a plastic pants hanger w/the clips like at stores to hang your bath mat and even stretch out your bath towels and hang it on it's own hanger to dry. I can hang these easier in this fashion due to limited hanging space from stretching out a towel. Depending where you hang them (on a short towel bar, over the shower rod, etc), they are open to air on both of it's sides. Thus, they dry faster.

    • @AskAngelaBrown

OxiClean is trademarked by Church & Dwight Co, Inc. the company who owns Arm & Hammer baking soda. OxiClean is the miracle cleaner for so many types of stains and is safe on most surfaces. That is a curious practice. And while it makes sense to have the towels for easy washing, what then is the purpose for the actual bath mat? And when do you wash that?

    Do you use the oxy clean with your regular detergent or by itself?

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  2 роки тому +4

      The OxiClean is the detergent. We don't use any other detergent for washing the bath mats. The vinegar is released into the wash in the final rinse so they are not used at the same time, nor do they cancel each other out like they would if you mixed them together in the same tray.

    You could probably get away with washing them once a month if you don't have family members that soak the floor, and put a small towel over the mat whenever someone uses the tub/shower, hang to dry over the tub between uses and clean that with your other towels weekly. Always dry as much as you can in the tub/shower, as mentioned in the video. Wring your hair out too, if it's long enough.

    I was a little confused, she said to only wash one at a time but then threw two at a time in the machine…? Also I wasn’t sure what she meant about “balancing the load?” I know you’re not supposed to overload the machine (never more than 3/4 full) but didn’t understand the meaning of “balancing” the Load.

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  2 роки тому +2

      Great eye. One bath mat with a rubber backing as they are heavier mats. In that load we added a terry towel mat. You can wash your mats with other towels or towel mats to "balance" the load. This means if you have three or four rubber mats in your washing machine the machine can rattle and shake because the contents are too heavy and not evenly dispersed in the machine. You want the mats to tumble so they can wash evenly.

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  2 роки тому +1

      In bathrooms we remove the shoe covers because we get in and out of the showers and tubs to clean. The floors are usually wet and it's a safety issue not to slip. When you get out of the shower the soles of your shoes will be wet, so you don't want the shoe covers to get wet or you will track that on the customer's floor. Clean the bathroom and as you leave, and vacuum and mop your way out, at the door, you put your shoe covers back on.

    It’s outrageous even to have a dirty like that shower!! How can be possible to shower in such a filthy shower?! Seriously, talking about bath mat how to keep it clean instead of the shower how do not use it disgustingly filthy?! I m not a freak or anything closer but cleaning your bathroom 2 times a week will prevent your feet to get fungus from that dirt and keep clean your bath mat. Nice to have a clean mat but it’s ok to shower or just to step on that filthy shower 😣🤔. I only use feet towel and never leave it on the floor after using it, change it weekly or every 5 days. I find rugs for bathroom disgusting and people who have them barely clean them.

      Hi Jules, welcome to the wonderful world of house cleaning. We get to see tubs and showers in all stages. They key is not to shame anyone, but to focus on cleaning those icky places and turn them into welcoming places where the homeowners will WANT to take a shower. Fortunes have been made from people who are willing to pay a cleaner to create a safe haven and a welcoming space.

    • @jules9056
      @jules9056 2 роки тому

      @@AskAngelaBrown I dont disagree with your comment above but showing how to keep the bath mat clean should start with cleaning the shower/bath. Less germs and fungus on the feet first and passed to the mat or towel. It’s like putting on a clean shirt without taking a shower. Just saying. Nothing wrong with learning how to clean the mat but that should be done together with cleaning the bath.
