Cleaning Solution Recipe
1 gallon plastic bucket
1 cup hydrogen peroxide
⅛ cup dish liquid
1 tablespoon OxiClean, powder
½ cup fabric softener
Dump on the carpet. Scrub with scrub brush. Rinse. Let dry in the sun.
How to Wash Your Area Rug
Step 1: Vacuum your area rug (top and bottom)
Step 2: Make homemade carpet cleaner solution
Step 3: How to scrub your area rug to get the dirt and stains out
Step 4: Rinse the rug with a hose and attachment and watch the dirt come out! So satisfying!
Step 4: How to remove the most water from area rug (and squeegee the garage floor)
Step 5: Hang your area rug to dry
This is A TON OF WORK
Really only good to do in the summer.

FYI: Avoid the fabric softener. It "softens" by leaving behind a residue that makes it feel soft. Problem is, that left behind residue causes dirt to stick more and makes it less likely to release when vacuuming. It's pretty gross stuff, really.
@Tiffany Moore Yep. The rug may be a bit stiff, like a line dried bath towel. But after a day of two of walking on, it softens on it's own. Or once it's dry, lightly give it a rib with a bristle broom to loosen the fibers up. ;)

Yes that's an easier option if you have one and it's not super cold (in the winter or would turn to ice).

I really really want to try this but I just had a few questions before doing so. I was wondering if I should add water to the solution for the carpet? Or do you just dump the solution on the carpet and then start scrubbing? Also do you have to use oxiclean...... Or is it okay to use another powder detergent? I just put it on and start scrubbing but read the level of the product you use to see best practices. You can definitely use another powder detergent but I’m biased towards OxiClean. Please share how it goes and good luck!
Use a squeegee on a broom handle to squeegee off soap and excess water. It’s what pros use

After rolling up the wet and clean rug, just put it in an upright position for a couple of hours and let gravity do the work for you.
Why not just pressure wash it?
