    Great point with the catalyst crop and the 12mm. So much more room to correct the footage.

      Thanks Mark, and awesome to hear from you again:) I’m a big fan of catalyst since I just let vids render while I have to do stuff for the day job. Therefore the wide starting point is a real ‘have cake and eat it’ situation.
      After a 10% crop in post you have around a 20mm f3 in full frame terms with great smoothness - pretty good outcome for me:)
      Hope you’re doing well and having a kick ass weekend 👍💪

    My ZV-E10 arrives today! I'm pumped. I decided to go with the kit lens while I save up a bit for that "perfect" vlogging lens. I've been debating in my head between this one and the 10-18 Sony. I have a couple of Samyang and Sony full frame lenses for my A7C and I feel like the Sony lenses have a much better quality, but maybe I didn't give my Samyang's enough chance to really shine. Thanks for the review, this should help my decision!

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому

      Great to hear from you Jill and exciting times! Congrats on the news purchase:)
      I do generally agree that most don’t lenses will be a better overall experience than the Samyang. I think the key here is a combination of value and the wider aperture-that sold it to me and after my testing I was actually pleasantly surprised by the quality.
      I’m way too in to bokeh to live with the f6 equivalent of the 10-18 as much as I like the other features of that lens 😂
      Hope you’re doing well and having a great weekend 😁

    • @mbvglider
      @mbvglider 3 роки тому +3

      Tamron 11-20 f/2.8 is a solid choice, too. Yes, the 10-18 is stabilized and goes wider, but the ZV-E10 can use active stabilization, and then while that's a heavy crop, at 11mm, you are probably going to be fine. As for the Samyang, if you want the f/2, you should get it. Remember that most third-party lenses have kind of iffy corner performance, but if you're using active stabilization, you're cropping the corners anyway, so you're using the strongest part of the lens. I personally think Sigma 16mm f/1.4 is by far the best wide lens for the system, but I think if you want to hand hold your camera, it's probably not wide enough unless you have giraffe limbs.

    Just got my copy of this lens to replace my manual version of it.
    Continuous AF for f2-2.5 is literally garbage for any focus area!
    I dunno if I got a bad copy but everything else works fine.
    Minimum you can use for video is f2.8.
    AF is okay for photos across all focus modes and areas.
    Images are as sharp as the manual version.
    I'm using an a6300.
    Hopefully Samyang can release a firmware update to fix the continuous AF concern.

      Hey folks, really sorry to hear about the AF issues. It definitely sounds like the body is part of the issue here - on the ZV-E10 the af works great in good light and more patchy in low light, so not sure if bad copies of the older body focus systems are the problem. I hope you get solutions and let me know if you have better experience with replacements!

    This looks like a viable lens for vlogging or filmmaking. The 18mm full frame equivalent of this lens with very little distortion is a great choice to have. To me, the low light test was rather unusual in that I would not choose to shoot in such a situation. There was very little light on your face, and I would challenge any lens to focus as well. Maybe a comparison with another lens? The price isn't too bad, either. By the way, my a6400 arrives today. Great review.

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому +1

      Hey ATF, awesome to hear from you again:) Agree that I was pleasantly surprised by how well the lens did and I’ll definitely be getting plenty more use from it.
      On low light, you’re right: the test is trying to simulate how you might vlog in low light without having your own light - so basically the least optimal situation but showing what the lens can do in tough situations. The extra bit showing even a tiny light gets you back to good performance was to try and show what a more sensible setup might look like:)
      Congrats on the new purchase too! Exciting times and hope you have fun with it:)

    DB firstly, you are so suave, Secondly, your lighting is awesome. Totally spot-on. Thirdly, your articulation and succinct breakdown of the lens is dope! Because of your review, I'm returning my manual focus Samyang and upgrading to the AF. Thank you, sir! Heya I have the Sony ZV-E10. I notice the wide angle is different when on photo vs video mode. It crops in on video. Why is that? Have you suggestions on settings to keep the ultra wide in video mode? I need to shoot exercise full-body shots, in a ultra small studio.

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  2 роки тому +1

      Bill thanks so much for the kind words:) I don’t think I’ve ever been called suave before but I’ll take it 😂
      As for the angle difference: it might be the aspect ratio of the photos - this can be changed in the photo settings menu. By default it’s 3:2 whereas video is always 16:9 which is comparatively a small crop in. That’s the first thing that springs to mind so fingers crossed 🤞

    Great video, as always. I have the manual version of this lens, and it's actually one of my favorite lenses. Love the colors that come out of it, it's got a lot of character. I also have the Crane M2, and it works really well on that. Always in my backpack, in case I feel I need the ultra wide look, it's so easy to carry around because it's so light. I don't know if this version is heavier, but mine is really feather light. Also, I got mine on Ebay for $125, brand new, so it was a no brainer for me, and I use manual focus most of the time anyway, so I'm happy with it. Keep it rockin', great work.

      I’m not sure about the mf version but the AF is around 213g, so definitely light 😂
      And for 125 that’s a real bargain - nice work!
      Definitely a strong setup on the m2 and mitigates the stabilisation drawbacks of the zv-e10 for anyone looking at a light and not too expensive vlog setup m.

    Just subbed, quality video again. How's the overall editing experience by far? With using Catalyst and lav mic, I guess you stabilize one by one, but how do you sync the sound? Do you connect the lav into the camera? As I learn more and more, it seems like quite hard work to make youtube videos.

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you so much and welcome on board- fantastic to have you 👏😁
      Audio is synced automatically as I’ll plug my mic directly into the camera.
      You’re right about catalyst, it’s limited to stabilising videos one at a time, but I usually let it render while doing tasks for the day job so it’s not too bad:)
      YT vids can definitely be a lot of work depending upon n the production style, editing and other things you want to achieve, but it can also be very satisfying and rewarding so there’s two sides to that coin:)

      Hey DM, always great to see you- thought I’d replied to this but clearly not - sorry 😂
      I’ll add to the video idea list but short version: catalyst requires post production and high shutter but is gear free and therefore super portable;
      M2 gets everything done in camera plus can get types of shots you just can’t get handheld; but it and extra thing to buy, balance, carry and charge so it’s not hassle free 😂
      Both are great at many things alongside having unique strengths so it’s useful to consider your shooting style and workflow for each situation:)

    But it is not wide enough. For interior design, you need wide glass. Im really liking the samyang 12mm but now i wonder, should i save the money and go FF instead?

    I just tried this lens and zv-e10 combo. I reay like the video. I also tried to take a photo and it gives me some dark corners on right top and left bottom. Do you think this specific lens has a defect?

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  2 роки тому

      Hey Dainty, I honestly take very few photos but some amount of vignette (slightly darker corners) is common on some lenses. I’d suggest seeing if your photo editing software has some vignette removal/adjustments and seeing if there are vignette tests for the lens out there before concluding it’s a faulty lens.
      Hope that helps:)

      Update! It was not a vignetting. It was literally dark corners on one up right and down left. And got a replacement and this one is totally fine! I must’ve had a defective one. Thank you. Love your reviews!!!

    I had this lens but sold it because of the constant micro noises pick up by my short gun mic. The noises seem to be produced by the focus hunting of the lens. And the constant focus hunting seem to happen mostly when there is a dramatic change in lighting condition. Like when taking video from indoor to outdoor, and I realise when the hunting started, it will not stop. The noises produced are extremely soft...the camera's internal mic will not be able to pick up the noise, but when attached a short gun mic, the noises is so audible. I used this lens on my a6500. I m just wondering do you have the same issue? As I actually never hear other youtubers mention abt this issue at all.

    As a Fuji shooter where the system is plagued with a lack of good, budget, wide angle options... I'm probably definitely picking the 12mm for sure.
    Mostly just as a glorified selfie cam with my girlfriend. Btw, is the ZV-E10 any good for casual photos?

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  2 роки тому +2

      Firstly, fantastic name. I like potatoes but their general lack of professionalism is the one lingering issue;) 😂
      And yeah, the zv-e10 is essentially the same photo camera as the other recent sont crop releases: a64/61/6600. Lack of viewfinder but slightly newer and slicker autofocus are the only significant differences. So should be more than powerful enough for casual photos or more:)
      Hope that helps!

    Thinking of getting rid of this lens, having regrets on selling my sony 10-18mm for this one, autofocus perfomance is terrible my viltrox 23mm and sigma 16mm performs way better, if only the autofocus performance is on par with the viltrox and sigma i'll be happy with this lens, also flaring is bad

      @@dbvares8745 It was terrible in lowlight keeps on focusing on the background, in goodlight the af is not very smooth sort of creeps into focus with lots of hesitation but was able to get better results when I switched the af tracking sensitivity to high

    • @sugarshanesmith
      @sugarshanesmith 2 роки тому +1

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Shane, sorry to hear that - sounds legit frustrating! I think you light be right about the AF in the a6300 being part of the difference-that’s 2-3 generations of refinement behind the zv-e10 I tested with and the camera might be carrying some extra weight and doing the lens a favour. Either way I hope you can either find a fix or an option that works better for you 🤞

    Samyang has a reputation for flaky AF across their range of AF lenses. Not surprising since they are so new to making AF lenses. However, at the 12mm length I would prefer to go full MF with Laowa, or… as is actually on my shopping list… choose the Zeiss Touit 12mm f2.8. Due to the Zeiss/Sony lens partnership there is more sharing of lens tech between the two company’s compared to other third parties. My Zeiss Batis and Sony/Zeiss lenses, like the 55mm f1.8 all AF without any of the Samyang issues, so I have high hopes that the little Touit may be a good match for the ZV-E10. The Touit seems to fly under the radar in recent times, but I would love to see someone putting it up against this Samyang in a comparison review some day.

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому

      Hey Artistjoh, awesome insights as ever:) And good shout on the Touit stuff; in the uk at least they seem both under the radar and a bit rare - I’ve hardly seen them when looking across all available lenses with the larger retailers. Now my curiosity is truly piqued 😂
      I quite like MF for b roll but I do like the comfort blanket of af for vlogging and subject tracking so it remains a nice incremental addition for me:)
      Hopefully if the channel can grow I’ll have more funds and opportunities to try lenses - so many I’d like to test but at the moment it’s limited to things I think I’m likely to keep and can justify the price of 😂
      Hope you’re doing well and having a great weekend 👏
