Love Brainbombs and awesome to see you doing a video of them. I was SHOCKED to find the shop in Seattle by the space needle (think its connected to SubPop somehow?) carried a number of their albums! Never would have thought Seattle's trendiest store would have a band like them on the shelves.

The craziest thing about GG was that no one has ever come out and said that he actually SA'd them or anything like that. He was definitely a degenerate , but probably not any more so than many of the so called "rock n roll stars" of the 70s and 80s. Jimmy Page, Iggy Pop, Axel Rose, David Bowie, the list goes on and on, all on record as having slept with girls as young as 13, which is beyond disgusting and utterly reprehensible, and yet they are still touted as "music legends." GG's girlfriend Liz Mankowski was 17 and he was 35 or 36 when they dated which is absolutely f*cked up, but then again, Jerry Seinfeld dated a 17 year old when he was 38 and yet he's a "comedy legend" and has suffered zero repercussions, it's all very weird. He happened to set out to become the most shocking musician of all time which he achieved, but there is such a massive hypocrisy in so many people calling him "the most degenerate musician of all time"

@@Nantosuelta Good point. The depressing thing is that once you know this stuff, it's like, "Do I just throw out half of my record collection/delete half of my playlist", as my late wife - fair play to her - did, or do you (try to) take the attitude, similar to when you watch a Roman Polanski film, "I'm gonna focus on what's important here, the art, not the artist" half of the time that you press play, forcing yourself to practice all sorts of cognitively dissonant acrobatics? I mean, what decent person now listens to Gary Glitter, let alone The Lost Prophets - well, specifically, Ian Watson(?) - and yeah, he was literally, like, about 'The Worst' - _literally_ literally! I hesitate to spell it out, but for those who don't know, he inflicted sexual GBH on actual 'infince'. But unfortunately, it's not really a case of 'These people are Scum', and _'These_ people are just Lovable Rogues', it's more like a sliding scale... And yeah, like you say, half of the people in 'The Canon', if they were just 'Joe Shmoe', and living in your neighbourhood, you'd clutch your children closer and cross the road to avoid them if you saw them walking down your street! Now, I should say much of what I'm going to say here is, at least for me, hearsay, but I think it's all generally accepted as true even if not really known to the casual punter... It is said that when Stephen Tyler's underage girlfriend refused to get an abortion after he got her pregnant, he (allegedly, ALLEGEDLY!) tied her up, or otherwise incapacitated her and set fire to the house she was in! (She escaped, Thank Christ!) The comedian Bill Hicks, super 'edgy' for his time, but a man I've never heard anyone under 60 say a bad word about, and who is in fact hailed as a genius (imo, he's funny, but he ain't 'laugh~out~loud' funny) would do routines where he would openly talk about sex with his 15 year old girlfriend. Now, even in the '70's, it was clear that this was meant to provoke, and was his way of getting up people's noses... But unless I'm missing something and 'she' was just a device invented for that purpose (highly doubt it!) those hailing him today, who no doubt queued up to throw brickbats (rightly so) at the Catholic Church for the hypocrisy and the cover~ups of _their_ clerics' sex crimes, seem to be more than willing to overlook this inconvenient little detail. Similarly, one of my favourite writers (Yeah! I know!) novelist William S. Burroughs (who'd already shot his wife dead playing William Tell, and had gotten off on _that_ charge), and his acclaimed poet mate Allan Ginsberg didn't just move to Tangiers, Morocco, to escape persecution for their Homosexuality, as the received legend has it... Tangiers in those days fulfilled much the same role for the World's 'creep' set as Thailand does today!
Slightly down the scale of reprehensibility, but still displaying a level of misogyny that even though I'm far from being a feminist, I still find dismaying; members of glam metal band Motley Crüe, to amuse themselves on long tours, were running a (probably notional) book amongst themselves to see who could go longest without washing their private parts before a groupie would balk at performing a BJ on them, (or be sick)! It's not just in the field of sexual misdeeds that these people are despicable, either... Both Keith Moon and (I've momentarily forgotten the guy's name, it's on the tip of my tongue, probably on account of my having done too many drugs back in the '90's... All fun'n'games until someone loses a leg. Or a life.) -- but, anyway, the actor who played the legendary Ferris Bueller, [EDIT: Matthew Broderick], just as with Moon, have both gotten away with manslaughter for running people over when pi55ed as newts.
Keith Richards and Anita Pallenberg got a couple of naïve rural French teenagers - if even that - hooked on smack, 'just because', leaving them in the lurch, and in agonizing withdrawals, when their dad inevitably found out and ran them out of town - at the point of a shotgun, no doubt! On another occasion, when the couple were jaunting around the countryside somewhere in South America, they came upon the scene of a road accident, with somebody lying, bleeding their life out in the road. So they did as any of us would have done, and stopped the car. Not to try and proffer assistance, _God,_ No! In fact what it was, was the opportunity to soak up the blood of a person expiring _right there,_ in a handkerchief for use in some later occult ritual was just _too good_ to pass up!
Presumably you'll be aware of plenty other examples of beyond~a~joke behaviour, absolutely sh¡††y parenting and so on and so forth. I suppose the truth is that even right back to the otherwise more uptight times of the Romantic Poets, we've been willing to - mostly - cut (famous) artistic types a bit of slack for their moral outrages, on account of their genius and their 'demons', and their highly strung natures... Didn't work out so well for Oscar Wilde of course, but certainly the case could be made here that it was his own hubris that put him in chokey!
I'm gonna go out on a limb here (hate posts to the usual place!) but I suspect we've seen something of an _over_ correction in recent years, where sexually tawdry - but consensual - behaviour is frequently classified as 7ape, or at the least, sexual assault. It is good though, that artistic genius is no longer seen as an excuse for criminal acts, sexual or otherwise. Of course, the attendant fame can still work wonders, as can those perennial trump cards, wealth, power, 'pull', and an army of slick handlers and mouthpieces.
Tbh, I don't know what to say by way of concluding. Depressingly, like the poor, I guess, human smegma will always be with us! Matter of fact, with hot & cold running 'gonzo' and super~dark, twisted, fetish and kink, porn available at the touch of a fingertip we are probably cultivating _hordes_ of such 'squirming brain' people. As against that, the modern intolerance of Toxic Masculinity and generally more sympathetic and understanding police forces may mean that more victims can receive justice, even if the scars will always be there, and it may be that more monsters are caught earlier in their offending career (notwithstanding that too many perceive 'Toxic Masculinity' as being the norm and not the exception, and too often, Police today can be overly credulous when it comes to allegations of sexual assault; "Listen and Believe" is absolutely appropriate for counselling agencies; unfortunately though, police have to be more willing to employ a degree of scepticism, or at least, reservation, in relation to allegations... 7ape victims do not lie about 7ape. _Liars,_ on the other hand will, and do, lie about 7ape, and anything else under the sun!)
Anyway, good comment on your part (if you've managed to persevere this far!) Sorry for ending on a bit of a discordant note there, and sorry about the length of this... essay. If not out~and~out dissertation! 🙄

@@richiehoyt8487 I did read your entire comment and am thoroughly in agreement. Its a good thing that people are being held accountable these days, even if perhaps some have taken it too far and cancelled celebrities on here-say alone. It still boggles my mind that so many musicians and artists who are still alive have somehow completely avoided ridicule, even with very well documented evidence against them. I was recently discussing the topic with a group at a dinner party and at least two people said "well it was a different time." and that absolutely baffled me. This isn't the dark ages we're talking about where most died at the age of 30. This is a few decades ago ,well within a lifetime. I still don't understand it, and I really struggle with it myself. Bowie and Zeppelin were two of my original inspirations and knowing the truth is hard to deal with. I don't really have a conclusion, but to be honest I don't really listen to a lot of that music anymore because its seem ruined for me.

In 2011 I did a small tour with a Texas Punk/Noise Rock band “Cop Warmth”. Up the east coast & back down the Midwest. Somehow “Brainbombs - Obey” was the only tape we brought with us in the van. We listened to it nonstop for two weeks straight.
We played Ohio & slept on the floor of this nice couple we met at the show. While drinking & listening to records in their living room we saw it… OBEY on vinyl! We all laughed & told our hosts it was all we had listened to since Texas & their response was just “seriously… how the fuck are you all still alive?? How have you not killed each other?!”
    Sigh, better times.

Can music become too perverse as to cross a line into being immoral, or void of any true value. A lot of art deals with horrific themes but those themes are related with a higher meaning which contains a lesson or helps to understand the world in a deeper way. I feel brain bombs is just perverse. Unfortunately I really like their sound. The most recent brain bombs albums are way less explicit. Two tracks I recommend from their newest stuff is Shadows, which actually has lyrics dealing with spirituality if you can fucking believe that coming from this band, and They All Deserve To Die. Which is a top track for me from everything they've done. I can't help but blast it as loud as possible. There are subtle variations in the distortion which gives the constantly repeating groove a sense of aliveness and an addictive head nodding catharsis. But I do not listen to the band anymore. I feel like they crossed a line as I mentioned before. I guess I'm becoming a bit of a prude as I get a little older. But I feel guilt if I listen to that. Still. Instrumentally they fucking rock. I dig the entire sound. The dead pan vox, the crushing asphalt distortion, the braindead groove.
    As loud as possible.

I always come back to Nietzsche on these questions, with morality being something that has shifted drastically from the 20th century till now, an inversion/trans valuations. As such, I find that actual bad things, bad behavior, exploitative things, are generally allowed and not truly critiqued; usually held under the banner of “art,” and expression. Just pure degenerate liberal values manifesting. What I do find funny, is the several topics which are currently no go’s, and yet are not utter filth or degeneracy, but instead a critique of those behaviors. We live in an interesting time as far as morality, and the Overton window has shifted dramatically since I was a kid in the 90’s. Take your porno or gore grind associated bands, and then realize that’s all totally fine and dandy, and yet Varg or the certain elements of the black metal scene are automatically blasphemous and transgress against the dogmatic humanist order. There’s “safe transgression” in art and film, things that are pure exploitation and exist to allow escapism into something ultimately nihilistic and lacking any eternal or transcendent value associated with or beyond it. The moment you get into anything with substance, then it’s automatically real deal transgression, as it represents power. Reminds me of the old Conan the Barbarian film, those eternal values manifest are what makes anything value; art, culture, literature, etc. They can be transgressive, but are never transgression for transgressions sake, which is where I think the issue is.
Modernist or postmodern art puts the individual and the ego first, in an attempt to “shock,” a la Damian hirst, and yet the joke is no longer funny in essence. It’s manufactured shock, as there’s no substance behind it. True art should have truth behind it, even ugly and dirty and dangerous truth.
As an example, I researched bad lieutenant the other night, just added to the criterion streaming service, all time favorite film, but it is utter transgression, but transgression in the service of ultimately an attempt at redemption. It is the best representation of Catholicism in film, and yet was an nc-17 film. It has such a power, especially near the end, that I usually start to tear up a bit. That film has such fundamental power because dragging itself through the muck and the filth is ultimately in service to a much higher God, or a value or principle that Carrie’s absolute power. That is true art, and I would say in my humble opinion it is, but I think it’s an objective fact. High art deals with values expressed though various means, but always in service of something greater. Never a Crowley-esque dive to the bottom.
My two cents anyways on the art questions, cheers brother.

I had only heard "it's unforgettable" somewhere online so I purchased a digital rental. One of my roommates/good friend and his girlfriend came into the TV room, asked what I was going to watch and decided to join me after I said, "It's French and supposed to be really good!" They loved Amelie afterall as did I so what could go wrong? They made it through the club scene with one or two "Oh fuck..."s but about 3 minutes into THAT alley scene, my roommate's girlfriend ran out of the room tears streaming down her face while yelling at me, "Why would you watch something like this?!" My roommate grimaced at me as he followed her out. He wasn't mad at me but I bought him a six pack the next night anyways because I did feel a bit bad I inadvertently exposed his very, very, very sweet, bright, cheery girlfriend to that flick. Had I known about Gaspar Noe back then, I would have picked something else lol.

I wish someone would be up to do a real deep-dive on Costes. His recordings, and especially his live performances (many with Lisa Suckdog) should be more legendary than they are. And then throw in his novels and film work, and you have a very twisted body of work. Unfortunately, i don't speak French so I can only fully appreciate a small amount of his work (around 10% of his music is in English. And one of his novels was translated.)

He paints with blood and it’s actually amazing art! I have his books, music and art and some is signed in blood. He paints other Black Metal artists like Dead from Mayhem and even GG Allin.

i am so in love with brainbombs. i found them about 3 years ago and i was so intrigued by their awful disgusting music. ive burned CDs, done art, the "cult following" thing is so true. on reddit people say their fanbase is strangely mostly female. it definitely rings true to me. its almost like coping, sexual violence is a horrific thing, and consuming media that covers such awful and brutal topica in such an unforgiving qay is almost cathartic. i hate them, i hate what they write, what they sing, how psychotic the music is. but their single riff songs are just so alluring. it brings me comfort that other women listen to brainbombs for the same reasons i do. its inexplicable...but this band has changed my life

You should check out Rectal Hygienics! Very Brainbombs inspired but heavier with more of an emphasis on feedback worship (imo check out Ultimate Purity, ppl tend to gravitate to Even The Flies Won't Touch You but honestly it's pretty overrated and the nuances of their formula aren't as developed yet) Just as perverse but they feel a bit more poignant than Brainbombs, to me they kind of operate as the opposite side of the coin of punk's typical sloganeering, whereas a typical punk band takes the political approach of "i hate our enemy, im on your side, we're in this together" Rectal Hygienics is more like "We are a portrayal of everything you should hate and we don't really care if you don't see the separation there between the portrayal and the person, the seed to be a complete degenerate is in every one of us, we are men and this is what men are and you should be disgusted" (the clearest example of this to me is the track When I'm Alone)

Also this band is so appealing to me because their music is SO effective. They strike the perfect balance, not just the fucked up lyrics but, the vocal delivery with that accent, the repetition (they really drill those riffs into your skull), the shitty lo-fi recordings, the creepy sax, the overall atmosphere & feeling I get from listening to this gets under my skin. It’s perverse, disgusting, UGLY music, it’s perfect. That’s how music like this should be. It feels so real, I can’t see how people see it as “edgelord” or whatever.
If you’re gonna go for broke then crank it to 11 like the volume knob in Spinal Tap! Don’t set out to make the most hideously, perverse, cacophonous, music ever then puss out halfway through. Make me feel uncomfortable afterwards.
I don’t listen to Brainbombs & want to become a necrophiliac, just like my love for horror movies & violent video games doesn’t…. well, you get the idea.
