I'm loving the addition of these herb propagation tutorials! Many people just say growing herbs is easy, but not many take the time to show HOW they easily grow those herbs so that we can do the same. It's also wonderful that you take the time to make your entire presentation in one video (start to finish) instead of having us click through multiple update videos, waiting to find out what happened. I really appreciate this attention to what your viewers want to see and that our time is valuable to us. Also, I'm excited to see how your lettuce plants in different nutrient solutions turn out! Shout-out for those "dollar store" one gallon containers they're in! Happy to wait for the edited video of the entire growing process and final evaluation, though. Keep up the great video making!
Shiso is a great herb. Definitely one of my faves. I live in Japan so it's easy for me to get the seeds, and I have a big planter full of it. It's great with fish - I make a Shiso mayonnaise just by chopping the leaves and adding them to a good mayonnaise. Better than tartar sauce!
I loved your video. Love purple and red shiso so much. I tried planting and rooting. The roots took forever to sprout and wouldn't take when I transplanted. I'm putting my plant in the ground soon. I want it to spread like a weed. We had some basil planted about 4 years ago and have it coming out of our ears. Lots of pesto. But shiso? Not so much luck. Will buy manure though. BTW, fish emulsion will kill this plant within days. Don't use it near or on shiso, ever. I love to make a basic shiso vinaigrette. Great on pasta and on salads!
This is very helpful thank you. It's helpful to know that it's like mint. I can't grow anything but I can grow mint so I feel like I can grow this too.
Nice video. I just brought home 4 shiso plants - they're young. Can you add how best to harvest the leaves? From where on the plant, how often, etc? Thank you!
I've grown these for years as ornamental because they grew anywhere, with absolutely no amendments except water during droughts, and they came in all different colors. Today I find out they are edible. Cool. And they have never spread by seed. Maybe now that I have wood chips they will give me the wonderful burden of becoming a weed.😊
I bought 3 plants last year, but they didn't grow well because they were overpowered by faster growing plants which crowded them out. However, after gathering all my soil from potted plants together into a few large pots, several shiso plants started popping up in the early spring. Five different plants came up and fared quite differently. The biggest grew to about 2.5 feet tall, and 2 feet wide. I am tempted to plant these in the ground and let them do whatever they end up doing. I tend to nibble on several leaves daily. They have a cinnamon like taste, in my opinion.
I have some in my house also in pots and yes they do re-seed very easily. But I am wondering about the Japanese rush plant used to make tatami. They smell good so have you ever planted them?
Hi Khang, Do you know what climate they can grow in outdoors? Im in Central Texas, no shade, and freezing winters, so maybe they need to be grown indoor?
Call me wimpy (and I can handle the hot ones), but my favorite for everyday use and in foods is the Serrano Pepper. If we're talking hot peppers then I like the MOA Scotch Bonnets the best. Oops... that's two... 😋 🌶 🌶
Thank you for the post it's simple and understandable ! I would like to grow them also, from the seeds. But do you know if I can start growing them in September as an interior plant ?
Hi there, I'm growing shiso as well, and it's not my fist time. Mine look exactly like yours, but both of them look different from the one found in Japan, do you think it's a matter of different seeds ?
They need light to germinate. My seeds germinated after 7 days by just putting them on to some soil, spraying them softly with water (they have to be kept moist). Then I put plastic wrap on top and let it sit in a sunny place indoors. Good luck
hey i have a question that you may be able to help me with i bought chocolate bhut julokia seeds online (amazon) and some how i got 1 to sprout in 3 days and that doesn't sound right it looks like a pepper seedling and it was a defiantly a pepper seed plus there was a bit of pepper left over in the package and it was pretty hot so i feel like it's real but it's ironic it germinated so soon
Seems like to got some fresh new batch. Freshly dried seeds sprout very quickly, so that's normal. It's hard to tell what the pepper is until you see the fruits.
I do have a question if anyone knows: How is it that some plants drown if their roots are submerged into water (reason why bubbling is added in Deep Water Culture), and here there doesn't seem to be any problem to root the plant in water without any air source !? Thanks.
When a cutting develop roots while in water, the roots are water roots and can live for a while submerged. Eventually, it will need to be removed. If your plants rooted in soil, the roots are adjusted to soil and they breathe air. If you take a soil plant and place it in water without aeration/oxygen, it will drown in 2 days or less.
Thank you so much for this answer Khang ! So it's young plants (including cuttings) that can live with only water at the root level ? And at a certain age, plants also start to need air at the root level ? (even if they were used to 100% water).
Minh Pham sounds like a nutrient deficiency. some times small insects pierce and suck the cells on one side of the leaf when it is tiny and then the leaf grows deformed. so replant with good compost and spray it with neem oil for the bugs.
@Julio Quinones - Just as you said, I found mites on the under side of the leaves. I did have to trim the plants down and sprayed with neem oil. That helped. Thanks for responding.
I know this is an old video but can someone tell me if these taste like the korean green perilla? I want to make kimchi with these but am not sure if it will taste like the green ones do
Khang Starr thank you! I ended up making a Korean side dish of steamed purple perilla. It turned out to be super delicious. Added some sliced green Korean peppers. Love your chanel!!
My shiso I bought at the store has started to flower, so I pruned the top. I took the cuttings and removed the flowers and some leaves on bottom. I'm gonna try and root them in water.. but is it too late to even try propagating them when they start to flower?

Thank you! The experiment is going well. In just 1 week, they tripled in size! I will post updates probably at week 4.
I want know if in Costa Rica I can faind that plant end where place thank

Khang Starr, You are a great teacher. I love getting video from you. I'm not into hot peppers but I really enjoy all of the rest. God bless!
No idea I could propogate this. Just when I was about to buy new seeds. Thanks for the info!
I love this herb, I had them so crunchy and tasted great when wrapping them with catfish.

It's ok if they spread very easily. Super delicious
FIRST WAAAAA YEESS
lololol agree
Thank you for this video! My dad loves shiso! We only have a little babyplant. Hope to propogate this soon so dad can enjoy eating shiso leaves 🥰
You will have an abundance of it real soon this thing spread fast once you let it go to seeds of course or propagated it.
Very informative. Thanks for showing us how to both plant and propagate this herb.
This is very helpful thank you. It's helpful to know that it's like mint. I can't grow anything but I can grow mint so I feel like I can grow this too.
Nice Khang! I've never tried Shiso.
Nice video. I just brought home 4 shiso plants - they're young. Can you add how best to harvest the leaves? From where on the plant, how often, etc? Thank you!
Excellent explanation. It's amazing how many different types of herbs can be propagated via cuttings. Definitely subscribing 😀

Thanks for sharing! You’ve got a very nice voice...
If you’re growing from seeds, do you have to germinate them on a paper towel first, or can you do it directly on topsoil?
Great video, thank you. How do you collect and store leaves for a longer period of time?
Thanks! Very encouraging to know I can root these in water :)
I have some in my house also in pots and yes they do re-seed very easily. But I am wondering about the Japanese rush plant used to make tatami. They smell good so have you ever planted them?

Is this the leaves used for pickled umeboshi plums? I would like to know recipes for using Shoshone! Thanks
Thank you for the post it's simple and understandable !
I would like to grow them also, from the seeds. But do you know if I can start growing them in September as an interior plant ?
Yes, if you can provide enough lights indoor for them to grow.
Hi there, I'm growing shiso as well, and it's not my fist time. Mine look exactly like yours, but both of them look different from the one found in Japan, do you think it's a matter of different seeds ?
Yes. Japanese shiso is a different variety.
Which is easier the korean or japanese plant. The korean is green. Japanese purple. Where do you get plants in nz.
another informative video! thanks.
i have a question about your cow manure. does it still have the smell of ammonia? if so, how intense is the scent?
No crazy smell at all, smells just like normal soil.
Khang Starr
ah..ok. the one i bought still has a hint of ammonia. i think i need to compost it more or just bury it. thanks Khang!
Hello can it grows in side during winter ? Thank you
I love shiso. I could have it propagated all over. But my space is shady. Would they grow in a shade area?
I believe half shade but not sure
@@Molr026 thank you.
Thank you for the information.
I love it
You mentioned they were like mint. Do you mean their taste?
Yes, it has a slight minty taste, not as strong as mint though.
Or Bhai ye poda gher me rukh skte henn kiyaaa
i can never germinate shiso. =( and the shiso in the groceries are just the leaves. so i can't even try to grow them from cuttings.
Go to an Asian grocery store.
They need light to germinate. My seeds germinated after 7 days by just putting them on to some soil, spraying them softly with water (they have to be kept moist). Then I put plastic wrap on top and let it sit in a sunny place indoors. Good luck
are you selling the seeds? I would love to purchase some
No, I don't sell seeds but they are very easy to find online. You can even visit an Asian Grocery store and buy some fresh ones for propagation.
Are they perennial or annual?
hey i have a question that you may be able to help me with i bought chocolate bhut julokia seeds online (amazon) and some how i got 1 to sprout in 3 days and that doesn't sound right it looks like a pepper seedling and it was a defiantly a pepper seed plus there was a bit of pepper left over in the package and it was pretty hot so i feel like it's real but it's ironic it germinated so soon

Khang Starr alright thanks, just worried it's not the variety i want

Why did my all die? I have 2 different pots and both of them all the leaves have gone dead
Awesome video. Ty
My shiso is getting taller is it better to top it for bushy plant? Will that kill it?
HL Iazzy Harvest and top off regularly to promote new growth.
Can you do a video on doing it hydroponically?

Hey I gotta a question I'm growing san marzano tomatoes is it possible to grow the using the Kratky method??
Yes. A friend, Matt Garver, have done it with great results. Check him out on G+
plus.google.com/u/0/113290266682034004240
Khang Starr thanks
But but but...... if you got them mixed up with your coleus how dead would you be?
The new leaves coming from my perilla plants are very curly. What could be the problem?
Minh Pham sounds like a nutrient deficiency. some times small insects pierce and suck the cells on one side of the leaf when it is tiny and then the leaf grows deformed. so replant with good compost and spray it with neem oil for the bugs.
@Julio Quinones - Just as you said, I found mites on the under side of the leaves. I did have to trim the plants down and sprayed with neem oil. That helped. Thanks for responding.
Do you water them everyday?
No, just water when the soil is a little dry.
These always die when I try to overwinter them inside and never seed out when I grow them outside. 😓
How cold tolerant are they?
They are warm weather plants, but will live down to 45F.
When are you going to say the winners of the give a way
I am currently drying Ground cherry seeds. It should take about a week or so and then the drawing will begin.
Hey khang, I got some that started putting purple flowers on them . They now look like they're dying. We did get a bunch of rain.
Does anyone have any idea where I can buy this plant, not the seeds? I have been looking everywhere! Please help
Frisky Meowingtons I go buy a bundle ($1- $2) at Asian market in produce section.
Bhai is pode ka Kiya name hyy
Hey I like your video and I love to ask if I can have some that seed if u do have it let me know thank
I know this is an old video but can someone tell me if these taste like the korean green perilla? I want to make kimchi with these but am not sure if it will taste like the green ones do
They do have similar taste, but these are less potent than the Korean green perilla. They are not as minty
Khang Starr thank you! I ended up making a Korean side dish of steamed purple perilla. It turned out to be super delicious. Added some sliced green Korean peppers. Love your chanel!!
Make the cutting 45 ° , blade underwater , 100% results guaranteed !
Why are my leaves wilted
If there was only one pepper you could grow, which would it be? (everyone put an answer if you have one)
Probably the jalapeño. I love jalapeño poppers. If it had to be a super hot, then I'd go with the Caramel Scorpion Moruga.
I would say Scotch Bonnet, especially the MOA variety. But now, I will only grow my own cross =)
I love the chocolate Scotch bonnet.
Stephen Curry I'm loving the Santa Fe Grande peppers this year.

Hi, do you know the name in Chinese, look like the same. or Korean call them sesame leaves
I think it's "Zi Su Ye" in Chinese. Here's a link catstcmnotes.com/pages/Herbs/Singles%20Catalog/Release%20Exterior/WC/Zi%20su%20ye.html
