  • Thyme Cuttings Made Easy! As a member of the Mint family, Thyme is very easy to grow from the cuttings of adult plants, and possible even grocery store stems if they are fresh enough! It is not hard at all and doesn't require any tools or equipment.
    In this video, I'll show you how to root Thyme cuttings in water and then transition them either to pots, or for planting straight into your spring garden. The process takes about 2 weeks to root them, and even though they are woody perennials, its easier than you think! :-)
    2022 is most definitely the Year of the Garden! We deserve it after the last little while, and growing our own food and self sufficiency is just the reward we need to get back on track! For more information on all your gardening questions, check out my other videos!:

    Fun fact:
    if you cut the stems shorter so that you’re just dealing with the softer woody branches, and then clear away with your thumbnail the first 2 inches at the bottom, you can just stick them into potting soil and keep them underneath a cloche. They’ll root even quicker. No water changes needed.

    One year, when I had a plot at the community garden at the Catholic church, I planted parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme, like the Simon and Garfunkel song. I just grew them as one season herbs. At the end of the season, I harvested them and hung them in bundles so they could dry. Or, I might have used my dehydrator to dry them. It's been a long time ago.
    I did not grow any herbs last year and the garden bed that I have is about half the size of the one that I had at the Catholic church. I still want to grow tomatoes and I'm going to try kale and want to try zucchini again. I always plant marigolds. If bunching onions count as herbs, I did grow those last year and will grow them again this year. I also want to try a different variety of cucumber. For me, every time I get to garden, it is like a brand new learning experience.

    Thanks Jeff, I don't know much about the herbs but chives and they are the easiest,
    Chives should be grown 2 ways
    1 plant ingrown about any where best partly shade.
    2 ND planting pot high enough so not attractive to male dogs.
    Remember if your potted plant dries up or die, you can pot half of the ingrown plant.

    My issue is finding those tiny bugs flying around and propagating near plants so I've thought of keeping my lil farm outdoors but of course birds and bigger bugs start eating my ingredients away so I have no choice but to grow indoors. How do I prevent the little flying bugs is it the soil choice? Humidity I have no idea.
    Or maybe should I build a mini greenhouse like a Lego playset. 😅

      A 1:1 mix of hydrogen peroxide and water can be helpful as a spray against bugs. Even some dish soap in water as a spray can work. It's easier if you know what type of bug it is though.

      Hey Rachel, yes I built it from scratch! The vents are regular attic vents that you can get at home depot. They really help to expel the heat on super hot days

      Thank you! You should market the plans of the greenhouse. For me I would have to get help...16 feet is a bit much 😉 Unfortunately, lumber costs are now in the stratosphere. Might have to go with metal. Would the configuration work the same?
      Cheers,

    what can you inform about cilantro and getting a season out of the plants.. or do we just accept it bolts early?

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  2 роки тому

      Hey Carla...harvest the Cilantro as much as possible and keep it cool and moist when the warm weather hits. It also sprouts and grows FAST, so if you get a batch that bolts, start another one right away....the seeds are ultra cheap! 🙂 ua-cam.com/video/Tf_0DfVKQOY/v-deo.html

    Are they suppose to stay outside when they establish or do you take them inside when winter comes? Thank you for this video, I learned something I don’t know and they always dry out cuz I think they can’t handle cold in zone 9b 😬 thank you again 🙏🏻

      Hey Emy, once they are established, my Thyme can totally survive my winter (zone 9b). You climate may or may not allow for it.

      Hi Emily. I live in Zone 8b-9. I have thyme in my garden where it gets constant sun, and it returns every spring.

    When you say extremely cold, what does this mean? I'm in zone 4/5, I don't think of this as extremely cold. But some do.

  • @fratosrustyhilldootanks2586

    Question!? My mom has a thyme plant in a container similar to the one you show taking cuttings from. I live in a pretty cold area of the North West US (-20ish times in winter). We have left this plant on the front steps exposed to the same elements as the front lawn. It comes back every year thicker hand heather yet I keep hearing I need to keep it warm. To your knowledge or anyone out there's is there a breed that is harder than the normal Mediterranean that I hear about?

    This is unrelated to the video but.... I have a question about arugula. Will it be okay if I fertilize it before it has its true leaves? To speed up the growth?

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  2 роки тому +1

      It won't speed up the growth. From seed to cotyledon to first leaves...all that controls that is heat, moisture, and light.

    Hi! I had a thyme plant that died on me. The room it was in gets pretty hot, do you think that killed it? Or maybe I overwatered it. Can it handle 15 hours of grow light also? Thank you please help!

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  11 місяців тому +1

      Hey Chris, sorry to hear that. Extra light won't kill them, but heat for sure can.

    Can you cover them in winter so they will grow back in the spring? Thank-you! I am in the Northeast.

      Hi Mike, they are definitely perennial. I don't cover mine and I'm in Canada. A bit of straw should be enough to protect them in really cold climates.

    I know that this video is over a year old but if anyone could give me advice on where I went wrong with my thyme I would appreciate it. I bought living thyme from a grocery story, very green and bushy. Looked super healthy. I take it home, water it (it was in a little 3 inch deep 2 inch wide pot. I separate out the end of the stems because they were very tangled. I leave it overnight with the intention to pot it up the next day but when I come back to it a lot of the tips are drooping. I take it out to pot it up, and it's revealed that rather than A Thyme Plant, what I've got is 50 or so individual single thyme plant stems. I pot it up as is because I couldn't find much information about what to do after bringing a living herb plant back from the store. It continues to droop and dry in its new pot. I only lightly dampened the new soil (cactus mix, was said to work just as well since it likes drainage). I give in and break up the bunch into 4 parts so that the stems have more room. Here is a definite mistake I think. Possessed by the knowledge of something I read somewhere a while back I (like an idiot) cut the bottom inch off the root mass "to promote new root growth". This definitely was me shooting myself in the foot, but I'll point out the plant was already dramatically failing before this. Did I mess up from that initial watering when I brought it home? It was a tiny pot and the water easily drained out the bottom. Should I have left it in the itty bitty pot??? I did read that cactus soil would work but maybe it doesn't hold the bare minimum water for the thyme? I fully acknowledge the root chop was stupid. I just wanna grow some herbs :(

    I am growing a basil plant
    My basil's leaves are so rough aren't they supposed to be soft? What do I do in this case?
    Rn I am trying to keep them away from the sun and giving them water but I just wanna know If I am doing it right ....
    I searched Google and youtube but I saw no answer...

      Basil leaves are kind of lush.....kind of tough. But if they are too tough it usually means over watering and possibly too harsh exposure to the elements.
