Can I pass the Russian tests on Duolingo? Also with my thoughts on the site.

  • In this video I try the Russian milestone tests on Duolingo and also give my thoughts on the website.
I mainly spoke in Russian during the test because it helps me answer the questions, I made subtitles though.
I used the site when I first started the language and it made me so frustrated that I almost quit. It's so strict with the answers that it wants that even though I can make a whole video only speaking Russian I still can fail these questions because I didn't use the word they were thinking of.
It's a great website if you want to become a translator because that is basically all you are doing. I do find it ridiculous that you can fail a Russian test for not using correct English grammar.

Whoa there! A native Russian here.
Surprised how little subs you have. Great work on all the language learning/explaining!
Duolingo *is* pretty strict with answers, but that's only because it wants you to understand all the tiny differences and some not-so-obvious things about the language you're learning. The difference between "the" and "this" is that the latter specifically means "этот/эта/это" while the former only implies that both the speaker and the listener know which object you are talking about, i. e. "this chair" - "это кресло", "the chair" - "кресло [, о котором я уже говорил раньше]". At least, that's how I would explain it.
Sentences like "Whose sister is she?" would translate into "Чья она сестра?" rather than "Чья сестра она?". I believe Duo marked your answer as incorrect just because of the word order.
It would be fun to see you continue this self-torture.
    P. S. Have you ever considered Japanese? I've been learning it for ~6 months on Duo and, save for some "inconveniences", I'm mostly satisfied with everything. Or should I say, 日本語を勉強するのが好きです。

    • @languageswithtom2634

Thanks, yeah it can take a while to get subs on youtube. I'll probably make a series out of this and see how far I can go. Half the time when I use duolingo I feel like I'm taking an English exam and I find it way too frustrating.
No I haven't tried Japanese other than trying to learn Hiragana for a few days. Learning kanji is what intimidates me about that, if I learn it I would probably learn Chinese first to make it slightly easier.

@@languageswithtom2634 Yep. And that's pity. Though even Duo moderators say that you should use the site as a supplementary resource, not as the main one (Translation: Duo is not a teaching site, it's a language related game). Also, some constructions there were pretty strange, though grammatically correct.
As for voices... I don't even want to start talking about this. Sometimes to answer correctly you must ignore the audio, or turn it off. For example, they don't use intonation to mark questions. As you know, in case of general questions intonation is THE ONLY way to dstinguish a question from a statement in Russian. And considering that in English it's not the case, I had to turn off the audio in the end to prevent myself from making mistakes.
Japanese is even worse on Duolingo . Due to the fact that Japanese and English differ drastically (much more than English and Russian), pure computer based approach doesn't work well there, especially considering that Japanese is a higly context-dependent language.
I also tried German and it worked more or less. It may be related to the fact that German and English are closer related... or due the fact that German is my weakest language and I just wasn't able to see what was wrong there )

Duolingo isn't a primary way to learn any language, but it's a fun game to get you started in a new language. I was surprised to be able to understand some of what's being said in the Russian comments on this video almost exclusively due to playing this game for a few minutes each day. Duo also has forums for most questions where they have native speakers able to answer your questions on grammar, pronunciation, spelling, colloquial uses, etc. When I get something wrong I take my education online (using my computer, not my phone) and find resources that can help me bone up on verb tenses, formal manors of address, or figuring out what patronymics are.

You know which is the biggest problem in Duolingo???
Is that if you are not a native english speaking person (at least- not a perfect fluent in english) tha wants to learn russian, in the translation RUS->ENG even if you perfectly understand the russian sentence, you can easily fail because you dont put down the eng tranlation in the perfectly correct order!!!!
I tried by a week, and you cannot know how many "porcodio" am i shouting!!!!🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
