This classic video - originally titled as "How to Succeed with Brunettes" - is an instructional film produced by Film Graphics Inc. for the United States Navy. It was released in 1967 and used as a training material.
The film demonstrates proper dating etiquette for young naval officers. Each segment shows a different social situation - picking up a date for dinner, taking a girl to the cinema, attending a small gathering at a private home, or meeting senior officers at a formal affair, for example. But the segments start with an exhibition of how not to behave, with a sarcastic voiceover offering mock congratulations to the blundering seaman.
Though vintage and archaic by today’s standards, the film is surprisingly relevant even today. Some of the tips that are sure to impress any woman even today include treating her as an equal, sitting her down first before taking a seat yourself, offering your date a "helping hand" whenever possible, opening doors for her, and in general showing respect. Surprisingly, one of the simplest, but oft-forgotten precautions the video advices you take, is to ensure your date’s hair stays impeccable and that she gets the best view of the restaurant.
Despite its title, the film concludes with a broader message: "Show respect for your date and her reputation and she will respect you. Success with brunettes or blondes, or just about anybody is built upon respect. And being a gentleman is to command respect. How to succeed with brunettes? Be a gentleman."
It may seem strange that the U.S. Navy was busy making a dating advice video at the height of the Vietnam War, but the military was clearly intent on forging gentlemen as well as officers. This film is one of nearly 3000 instructional and training films produced by the U.S. Navy during the 1960s that were intended to contribute to overall health and well-being of naval officers and seamen.
In 1968, How to Succeed with Brunettes, along with its companion film Blondes Prefer Gentlemen, was awarded the 60 Minutes “Oscar” for the “most unnecessary and fiscally wasteful” film, at a cost of $64,000 to taxpayers (approximately $446,000 in today’s dollars).
The film features wonderful music, evocative of its era, and a fair bit of comedy, both intentional and unintentional.
BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
Dating is a stage of romantic relationships in humans whereby two people meet socially with the aim of each assessing the other's suitability as a prospective partner in an intimate relationship or marriage. It is a form of courtship, consisting of social activities done by the couple, either alone or with others. The protocols and practices of dating, and the terms used to describe it, vary considerably from country to country and over time. While the term has several meanings, the most frequent usage refers to two people exploring whether they are romantically compatible by participating in dates with the other. Dating may also involve two or more people who have already decided that they share romantic feelings toward each other. These people will have dates on a regular basis. This period of courtship is sometimes seen as a precursor to engagement.
In many cultures around the world, dating is a serious family matter, which is based on its culture and social values. Parents in said cultures believe in arranged marriage, or at least make sure that their children get married at a certain age. However, in the United States, independency plays an important role in how singles value and date others. In America, dating is mostly a personal decision rather than based off the influence of parents. However, parents still usually expect their children to get married, but is still their son or daughter’s choice between whom they want to date or marry. Middle class tend to prioritize other things that are more important to them, such as get a college degree, a job, and then date their future spouse to settle down. Before the internet era, some Americans would meet their prospective husband or wife in college, through friends, at work, etc. But now is very popular that singles are trying to meet people on websites and from cell phone applications.

Seriously, when I was enlisted, we had a story we used to illustrate the differences between the officers and the men.
A bunch of enlisted men are playing poker below decks, when one announces he has a full house.
"What? Lemme see your cards!", said another sailor. The one claiming he had the full house said "But officers don't demand to see each others cards". "Yeah", said the other sailor, "but them sonsabitches is gentlemen!".

When it started I was like "wth" at the tips. xD Then I realized it was the wrong way.
Around 14-15 years of age while visiting my grandmother i had the opportunity of a lesson in manners. While sitting on the couch, a friend of hers visited, when introduced i sat there and reached out my arm to give her a handshake. My grandmother was fumming. She proceeded to educate me how disrespectful i had been and made it very clear what proper manners entailed. One of the best lessons i had ever needed to learn. God bless her and may she rest in peace.

'Politically incorrect' isn't really why this is bad modern advice. At any point in history, enforcing your expectations for intergender relations kind of makes you a jerk.
But for the record, I also laughed a lot and shared it. My far-left friends laughed the hardest.

I would love if we would bring back old fashioned manners and nicer dress again! When you act civil, dress nicely, and have beautiful architecture/surroundings these things all serve to elevate how you feel, behave, and think. Makes for a more courteous, orderly, and nice world to live in for us all.
I dressed to go with the family to the Nutcracker ballet this year. When we got there I was shocked to see basically no one dressed even business casual. Everyone was dressed sloppy casual, and two people were wearing flannel pajama pants (Christmas themed of course)! You can dress a little bit more sharp without having to sacrifice comfort by picking the right items. We should think more about going back to some of the old things we lost. We threw the baby out with the bath water.

All I could think about the entire time during the first part of what not to do is this is exactly what my husband does and he's an officer too 😆😆😆 have to be direct about that sort of stuff since the work mindset often subconsciously comes home- but that's ok cause then we're all happy in the end 😀

Yes, that is the way it was - went through the training - still have the Mustang (1970)! We were trained to be "Gentlemen" and treat our "Ladies" accordingly. The protocol still remains for a few of us and in foreign military training. Great video - brought back a lot of memories, Ciao, L (USN Retired)

Not need. The assumption is that they are your social superiors. Notice that a lot of the protocol is the same as for a commanding officer.
It was all done to make things easier for the lady, they only did it because they thought that's what ladies would appreciate , the entire date was putting the lady first, givong her the best seat, letting her choose where to go , follow her lead, offer assistance when and if she wants it,
Some women really like being treated like that.
Most women still haven't got that figured out yet. I'm surprised that parking lots aren't filled with women trapped inside vehicles. I suppose that they either take a man with them or just wait for some kind gentleman to walk by. Automatic doors at grocery stores have done a lot to further women's ability to interact in the broader world without making them feel too self conscious.

Although some of these situations, aren’t as likely to be encountered, this contains some priceless social info on consideration for behavior with your girl, and others. Many boys nowadays are anxious to get a woman alone to score with and want info on getting a female ASAP, and winning at picking up females to quickly get the next women, Guys, (and many girls), usually aren’t taught squat about etiquette and consideration toward their female interests. Even if this is a bit archaic, every young man should see this video, to know how important it is to not to just placate her, she’s not just a piece of meat. She should also treat her date with respect, thank him ect. Also, by being kind, polite, appropriate, respectful, and thanking him for his time and anything he paid for.
I really enjoy this, i think this must be showed in the schools to prepare boys and girls for the future. But this is 1960's, some of this tips are not so effective nowadays.

It is a thing because good manners elevate you and those around you. Like wearing clean, nice looking clothes, you feel better when you put in more effort! Having decorum makes society nicer, and it makes people feel like they matter and are deserving of respect.

At "THE END" the date appears to be 1966 rather than 1967. This is an excellent video. Fifty-six years later some circumstances are a bit different, but the basic guidelines still hold.
