How to be Pretty - 1940's Guide for High School Girls
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 чер 2019
- Ponds beauty consultant Mary Stuyvesant dishes out some home spun advice to a group of high school girls on how to look prettier by simply following some basic rules.
Looking pretty, according to Miss Stuyvesant, is not just about dress code, clothes, hairstyle or makeup. Though these are important to any girl. You can see Mary's other detailed tutorials here on our channel via the links on the video. They deal in detail on the subjects of makeup like rouge, lipsticks, eye shadows and the correct hairstyles for face shape.
The first part of this lecture, featured here, is about the basics. A good diet, a healthy sleep, and plenty of exercise.
"Makeup, hair and clothes", says Mary, " are just the trimmings, like the icing on the cake. But if the cake itself isn't good, you'll soon lose interest in the icing".

i love how she talks about getting sleep and not "sitting up in bed writing letters and listening to swing records".. kids back then did the same things we did! staying up texting our friends and listening to our headphones, lol.
except writing a letter is the fucking most boring thing you can do as a kid
@@CAndela24ifyif you have no phone and it's the only communication for some people it's great! I did it with a friend of mine, because we couldn't talk long on telephone. This was only 20 years ago, i was like 8. It's pretty cool if you just want to tell someone about your day or your favourite movie you just watched. It's the same as now basicly, but slower.

"Sometimes I want to shake you girls when you worry too much about being pretty, or not being pretty as though prettiness were a woman's only attraction." This is something that still applies today! Great advice Miss Stuyvesant!
Sure, but then she immediately changes the girls appearance to be “prettier” instead of asserting it’s more worthwhile to happy and healthy.
It does an awful job of hiding how much everything in this time WAS about making women pretty and ready for marriage. It’s ghastly just how much people are watching this and not picking up on that.
@@e.tominsteadand how she literally explained at the beginning how it is the most important thing. very contradictory. but i do understand the premise
Agree❤
Who is she that’s talking
@@e.tominstead I wouldn't necessarily agree. It was to show what happens when you do all the things mentioned. Being active and eating healthy makes you slimmer and looking more radiant, wearing the right clothes for your body type and shape can elevate your style and sometimes visually even posture. Often self care and beauty get too mixed up. Someone taking care of themselves and looking well doesn't always mean that they're vain and beauty focused. Simple self care naturally makes you look better.

How interesting that the same treatments for “how to be pretty” are the same remedies for depression . Taking daily showers , getting enough sleep , eating nutritious foods , exercising/being playful outdoors where you get sunshine , getting your tasks done vigorously / being productive . Basically doing things to improve yourself as a whole make you prettier without even trying . Love this video . Girls today should watch it
Depressed people are not pretty 😎
Kids nowadays are far too gone for this.
i thought curing depression is more complicated than that
Okay but the idea they’re providing is that you should do these things to improve your looks. Everything, especially then, for a young lady is centered around her looks so she’ll someday be marriable. These things should be promoted because they can make you happier and stronger.
The food portion is also incredibly outdated.
@@e.tominsteadvery good observation.
I love that writing letters and listening to swing music was their equivalent to texting and scrolling through TikTok 😆 the technology changed but it’s heartwarming to see the similarities in humankind, even if it’s our unhealthy habits 🥰
Writing letters is nothing like texting. 🙄 The time gap between replies means people didn't spend all their time doing it.
And listening to swing music is the same as listening to any music, nothing like watching brainwashed nutters on tik tok all day.
And you might be surprised to learn people still listen to music in 2023, including swing music.
So what was their equivalent of Facebook, twitter, Instagram and video gaming or online porn? See, everything IS DIFFERENT.

I really like how this is more about being beautiful by treating yourself right because self-care is so important. A happy mind and body is what makes someone beautiful in my opinion. Not cosmetics, fashionable clothes, etc., but how you feel. Of course, if makeup and fashionable clothes can make you feel good great, but it's very important to feel good even without those embellishments. This applies to everyone regardless on personal beliefs, gender, whether you dress more masculine or feminine, etc..

@@awesomegirls10 This was in a time without 60 percent overweight. Adipositas is not healthy. Diet culture wasn't needed in a time when people walk a lot more and eat less calories
Plus guys, you have to remember, a lot of these foods WERE really healthier anyway because they didn't have as many preservatives or GMOs in them, while now, pretty much everything does. Our food markets are a bit more commercialized, so even chicken isn't as healthy because they sometimes inject it with saline. Depends where you get it from I guess if we're talking about freshness and quality, but what I'm trying to say is, if you went to the store and got these same meals, it won't be *as* healthy. *When you've learnt more about beauty and health in a video from the 1940s compared to your whole life*
I think this video is so sad. We DO worry too much about how we look. We have all been told (like in this video, approximately 70 years ago) that being beautiful is something that we should strive for. We think that being pretty makes us confident and feel good, and especially that it will make people like us more. In reality we get anxious about our looks and our confidence is shattered to peaces. We start to think that we are not pretty enough, like she says in the video: you can always be prettier. That is so sad. If we just abandoned the idea that being beautiful is important in any way, we would be so much happier. We would see that there is so much more to us and our personalities than the way we look.
@@noone3188 tell me when was the last time you fell in love with someone's personality at first sight. Lol! Just sayin'
@@TheMocao well you tell me can you really love someone based on their looks? Is it really a healthy relationship if it is based on falling in love at first sight? Your personality is much more important.
@@noone3188 Personality is indeed important, but I've never met a person yet that didn't LOOK at the person first - unless they were physically blind. Usually it's our attraction to a person that allows us to get to know that person's personality. That's all I'm saying. If looks are not important to you then that's great - but if they are important to someone else then that's fine too. It's called individuality.
@@noone3188
Perfectionism is an issue all on its own, it applies to everything. Why try to be highly academically achieving? You can always do better. You'll never get 100% will you? So don't bother at all eh? Applying your logic sounds preposterous.
Many people bother with looks because we're social animals. And it truly does give great confidence. To know that you aren't a stinky, rag wearing pathetic little thing, is good. Of course I'm not saying that the obsession with plastering on makeup, or fast fashion, or most things caused by social media are any good. But generally to be well kempt, proffessional when need be, beautiful or handsome when need be, and so on, is incredibly important to healthy self image and social standing, relationships with others be try romantic, work, friendly etc.
As for physical appearance for intimate relationships. Without sexual attraction it doesn't quite work does it? Sexual attraction is really about the body and its presentation. The other side of intimate attraction, to a person, also requires physical appearance to be well kept not because society culture mumbo jumbo. But because we naturally seek out those that have it together. If one looks shabby, unkempt etc, they obviously don't have it together. Physical appearances aren't just some useless social construct, they can tell you about a person. What I'm saying is the physical is an extension of the psychological. You're evidently utterly in love with the idea of personality, well the way someone looks tells you a lot about them
I actually love this! Practical, solid advice.

The whole video is her trying to get girls to conform to the beauty standards of the time in order for them to be “pretty” so i dont think that one statement is worth much
@@baddieMario77 maybe it's because we viewed it differently. For me, I think this statement meant that a girl has many more beautiful qualities than just being pretty and that it's ok even if she doesn't consider herself pretty because she still has other qualities that can be considered beautiful and attractive.

Me: *laying on my bed watching this*
It’s lily Alright? 💔
I'm outdoors watching g this 😂
It’s lily Alright? Why are you commenting. Go outside
It’s lily Alright? sometimes you have to go to a strange room without a ceiling between the house and the store, sometimes you have to-
It’s lily Alright? For real
Wish I'd seen this 6 years ago when I was 13. It's all so true and for some reason I find myself trusting it more than other beauty videos online.
Wow! Today's girls could use guidance like this!
Standards now: It don’t matter what you eat. Just look skinny.
1940: "It worries me that so many girls think a balanced diet consists of soda pop and a sandwich or a big gooey sundae"
2020: "It worries me that so many girls think a balanced diet consists of soda pop and a sandwich or a big gooey sundae"

@Hunter Fest welp, busted lol. I was drinking a starbucks coffee and eating a bag of chips yesterday. This lady is going to beat me with a ruler 😂.
Full Circle
I remember when I was attending college, this girl would come into class all the time with an Orange Crush and strawberry pop tarts for breakfast. She was in decent shape then but omg, I hope she's not eating like that now.🤯
Woman: "Go easy on fried foods"
Americans: LET'S FRY OREOS
【ɐpɐɹıP ɐuɐʇıdɐC】 lmaooo facts
Okay but have you had those? Way better than they sound ngl
We literally fried water... I don’t understand...
【ɐpɐɹıP ɐuɐʇıdɐC】 omg i love fried Oreos
Fried ice cream
I love the way she speaks, the pronunciation and intonation!👍
Beauty is health, intelligence and self care, not plastic surgery and sleazy clothes...how groundbreaking!! 👏🏼
I'm actually surprised. These are actually good advice.... And the lady seems BADASS 😂
Stupid hair tho
heaintloveu The hairstyles of the 40’s stand up to the test of time a whole lot better than today’s half-dyed pink and grey overprocessed scruffy fright wigs your kids will be laughing themselves sick over in 20 years.
Heck yeahhh
@@sleesullivan2796 You know where those hairstyles of the 40s are popular these days? NORTH KOREA.
we should all take her advice 😂
They used the disguise of beauty to promote good health and I love it
@SAITAMA totally get that but the time period focused on beauty and they used that to promote self health in the time period
I'm sorry but why would they need to? People really thought girls were dumb little creatures who couldn't understand the benefits of being clean without having to tying it to their abilities to attract a boy?
@@bertinecharles6398 4:10
@@mckaylamontoya3498 I get what you are saying but I wish the words popularity and prettier weren't mentioned. And I don't care what period it is, girls were (are) smart enough to talk about hygiene and clean living without it being tied to their social status. I can't seem to find the charm in it even when I try to put myself in the context of the time period. But I appreciate your opinion.
@@bertinecharles6398 I totally get that and of course agree but idk still compared to other videos I saw on that this was kinda refreshing
Very quaint. And it still has useful advice so many years on!
I love this. Today we are taught to be inclusive, and to just girlboss our way through life. This kind of thing that teaches about takimg care of your self, staying healthy (even if you are overweight) is incredibly important.
Hilarious how we don’t change much. Instead of going to bed to write letters I’m going to bed and scrolling through my phone. So different. Yet the same.
I know right?
When I can’t get to sleep, I play a favorite old UA-cam video, one with cheery, pleasant historical reinactors, which I have watched 100+ times. Works better than anything else.
MrParkerman6 she/he meant that both are a divergence to sleeping and getting a good nights rest
MrParkerman6 It is the same though. They’re sitting in bed writing to their friends and listening to music. I’ll scroll through my phone instead, and that can include texting my friends or watching UA-cam
Jedi k shut up
I swear these teenagers really piss me off listening to their swing records and writing letters on a school night!
the new generations, am I right? I can't imagine what the future will be like with such careless youth smh my head
@@gaspardp7314 Pretty soon they'll be walking on our lawns!
I'm dying XD
The young generation surely doesn't know how to keep up to health, I wouldn't be surprised if they broke their leg while listening to swing records in the garden and then came crying to us!
Margaret go to sleep, I can hear your pen scratching from down the hallway.
we need more of this today!!
Yes.
Wow, what a difference between what was taught now and today.
"Use a deodorant regularly - it's a shortcut to social security" 😂😂😂👌
Eva Nap, I didn’t understand that part.
@@AntoinetteWolf They mean securing your social standings with people aka people won't run away if you smell badly, not actual social security 😂
Understood! Well said. 😊
Wish they’d tell that to the convention circuit. Them people sell like... bad
Wish they told that to my classmates.
"sometimes i could shake you girls when you worry so much about being pretty or not being pretty as if it's a girls-only attraction" this also works in 2021
No, it wasn't an affirmation. She said the girl could be pretty if she did all these things that made her more attractive to men. The lady had already said she wasn't attractive because of her "round face" and "the way she wore her hair." We don't exist to live up to someone else's standards of beauty.
@@christineegan465 no she didn't... First of all she never once said "attractive to men". She never made it about men, she made it about the girl's own self esteem. I feel that it's more of a modern thing to equate beauty to how many men want to fk a girl.
It's the girl who said she had a round face, wears her hair wrong and doesn't look pretty. And the woman rebuked her for that, emphasizing that beauty isn't simply a pretty face. And actually, she way very much AGAINST the beauty standards when saying that what really matters is self care (healthy food, exercise, sleep, washing routine).
The girls who attented were there because they wanted to feel prettier and better about themselves. The woman used that energy and guided it into a healthy path. She didn't tell her lies, didn't give an unobtainable goal, didn't play down her insecurities but rather showed her her own beauty.
Its true that we do not have to live up to other's expectations. Its also true that if a girl seeks guidance she should get a good one. And, to be honest, we girls DO care a lot about how others perceive us.
everything now is plastic surgery, bbl, filters, detox tea, make up trends... it's sad
@@peachbooks3199 tbh I feel like the reality now is more harsher on girls then before
@@peachbooks3199 Fr, the only thing I do to touch up myself is just play around with make up.
This is great information! Still applicable today!!
That's actually great advice! And it can be used by anyone, not a specific demography, splendid
I like how this is more about self-care and mental health than following beauty standards
Yas!! So cool
And the importance of exercise. This at a time when girls were generally told to stay home and stay inside.
Yeah, I missed this kind of info in school by about 15 years. I needed it.
H Sunset Never too late my friend!
Turtle CommanderChief Thank you.
Lady: "and stay away from fried foods"
Me: *slowly puts down chicken nugget*
🤣😂🤣😂 you made me laugh out loud, thank you 😊
DEAD 💀😂
Lmao thanks 4 the laugh

I felt that 😂😂😂
This is so unbelievably up to date ❤😱🥳❤
LOVELY advice and best of all an education giving perspective to those who have been twisted by contemporary non-sense.
