@@LukeKickwalkerHe’s saying that Marshmello being an industry plant came as a surprise to him, because let’s face it, if you’re someone who just throws a Marshmello song on from time to time, you’d have no way of knowing this.
Many people, myself included, probably figured that this is a DJ who blew up solely due to his gimmick/mystique and a few catchy tunes.

My "take" is simply that personal responsiblity has to come into account after a certain point and you can't keep blaming people who see easy profit. It's on us to make what we consider "deep" and "quality" accessible, since it usually takes refinement and effort for people to be into that.

When the first few Marshmello songs came out, I immediately knew the drums, and how they were mixed, were the same as Dotcom’s. and Dotcom had a few tracks that had jersey club drops with a trap switchup that sounded like early Mello songs. and the 808s Mello used were almost identical to what Dotcom was using at the time. Being a fan of Electronic Music & heavily invested in the scene from back in the late 2000s I definitely miss the social media days/"EDM twitter" back in 2013-2016 going down Soundcloud rabbit holes discovering lots of these artists you mentioned. And for the folks that were following all this stuff back in those days with all the names & labels mentioned like OWSLA, NestHQ & a bunch of others, within a few weeks Marshmello bursting onto the scene people quickly narrowed down the list to either Jauz or DOTCOM being Marshmello so that trick Tiesto pulled at EDC only really had shock value to the mainstage kids who had no clue of what was going on.
I liked a few of his first few tracks that had heavy bass elements but I wasn't too keen on the forced beef/drama he tried starting with household names like Deadmau5 & once he fully transitioned into a Pop brand & all the "Fortnite" stuff I completely checked out. It was obviously wild seeing DOTCOM go from an average remix producer/run of the mill DJ to a global brand in real time & good on him for his success but for many purists of the wide genre of Electronic music this was a signal of the direction the whole scene was headed in with lots of promising names & even some seasoned veterans completely ditching their own sub genres/sound & switching to generic Big Room/Mainstage sound or just straight up pop music which they were just doing to try & stay relevant with the growing crowd of "mainstage" fans attending the big EDM festivals.
I liked watching this cause it brought back a lot of memories & things I haven't really thought about in years tbh & you broke down a lot of the little details pretty well so even fans of this guy who may not have known his backstory can learn a few things about the scene in general.

The problem is that's not what they're doing. They're engineering satisfaction using psychological and subliminal manipulation, for maximum revenue growth. Those aren't "music scientists" those are Psych majors following the orders of MBA majors with "advice" from musicians who are cut a check and are happy to not be a "starving artist" anymore. They're more _telling_ you what and how to "feel the music" than figuring out what you actually like and catering to that. That's why MM and other industry plants are so generic and is heavily skewed to younger audiences. Because it's informed by _general_ psychology to appeal to the widest possible audience, which is maximally applicable to people at ages before they've fleshed out their own individuality (13/14 and younger).

Sia does the same thing, only has weird hair. Personally, I love Marshmallow, I love working out to his music and it does carry a really cool positive vibe. I think Marshmallow has done a bang-up job at leveraging more than one industry. To top it off if he goes into public he's not barraged with crazy fans, paparazzi etc...
My hats off to the guy! Nothing but respect.

He came to our music industry "forum" at my college one day. Near the end of the interview about him just talking about "collabs" and "being blessed" and "getting connected" he proudly declared that he was still evolving as a musician- and that last week, he learned what a major third was and what a harmony is. I am not making this shit up.
For the non musicians reading, intervals and harmony is like third grader music class.

The fact that people enjoy marshmello's music than trying to uncover his identity is probably one of the best things about the edm community, it doesn't matter what he does in his free time with or without the mask as long as his music is good enough to send positive vibes then its a win in my book

Been going to fests since 2017 and most ppl I've spoke to aren't fans of him LOL. Ppl who are very new to the scene like him. He used to be my fave too before I really got into the music. His music is very mid. That being said, in any community there's people who act too high and mighty. There's always ones who take that patronizing mindset. Live and let live. But I completely understand why people do not like him -- he represents everything that raving used to stand up against -- society's rules, capitalism and all that.

The whole Marshmello identity and him being an industry plant was a big (and already solved) topic 5 or more years ago.
I already thought that everyone knew it and enjoy his music for what it is. But I guess the public consciousness is feeble in the sense that old listeners find new artists and every new listener doesn't necessarily dwell deep into every artist that they find.
The whole topic of industry plants is fine by me, as long as the plants don't lie and don't try to heavily push back the fact that they are one. In the case of Marshmello brand, he hasn't confirmed nor denied the fact, which is fine by me + the surface level mystique is the brand.

Edm and the whole DJ scene fell off in the mid 2010’s they would have some popular songs and stuff, but nobody who wasn’t in the sphere of edm music gave a shit anymore after about 2015. And even before then edm was still in it’s on sphere and collabed with artists outside of the genre every now and then but no one would dive into the genre and would just listen to that song, like the Justin bieber collab. We also didn’t care much because, we don’t care. There’s some people who are masked and people actually care about because of their personality and just who they were without a face, e.g., Dream and BoyWithUke. They weren’t some random white guy who made generic music and kept taking off his mask in whatever shows (I’m talking about before dream took off his mask and started doing whatever he’s doing now)
Basically nobody cares as the edm scene was left behind and people transitioned mainly listening to hip hop or rap music.

I remember back in 2016-2017, when I still used to make youtube videos, I was heavy into the EDM scene. Of course, Marshmello was the biggest thing at the time and I remember all the hits like wolves, alone, silence, everything that was mentioned in the video. I eventually faded out of the EDM scene after I left UA-cam around 2018-2019 (ironically is when I got into Juice Wrld and I still love their song come and go that they made together on Juice's album). Anyways, crazy to come back here all these years later and see the full behind the scenes picture that was happening all along. Just kinda shattered my reality and childhood a little bit but I'll recover lol. Damn I miss those times :(
