Gotta say, this is VERY innovative. I've never seen a turn-based tactics game with a free-smooth movement like that before. As you simulate the distance you wanna move your unit, you can also check how much the enemy will reposition their forces. Hats-off to the producers, well thought. As a big fan of the Front Mission series, this is a certain purchase from me.
Frozen Synapse did it
This is dumbed down mechanics from Frozen Synapse with much better graphics and relatively fluid animation. This is a rarely seen genre but hardly innovative. So far I haven't seen any new ideas or mechanics. The only thing I've not seen in other similar games is usage of height difference in the battlefield, but it's a stretch to call it innovative.
@@anteshell You have seen more than me. There is that. I haven't. To me, its still innovative.
@@MauMenzori If you haven't played it Frozen Synapse is an amazing game! might be dead now.
@@MauMenzori Yeah there might be that. I'd love few things more than seeing this combat strategy sub-genre to raise up from niche. Im not aware of a single AAA game. Plenty of those with active pause, which is kind of similar, but doesn't give the same satisfaction from well executed combat maneuvers.
Jumped on this as soon as it released on steam. Unfortunately here Splattercat never leaves the tutorial. After that last mission, you gain access to the entire map, can craft, upgrade your base and add additional mechs. If you've played before, the game actually has a quick start so you can completely skip the tutorial SC does here.
The game feels really slow at first as you try to learn everything but once you start "Tabbing" through everything and know how to use the commands, the turns move much more quickly.
18:40 yes, you're still in the tutorial. Basically Mechs have a "Frame" which is just the skeleton of a mech, all the arms, legs and chest piece you pick up are the stuff that makes it unique and slots onto it. By default you can't salvage frames*, you have to craft it in your work shop which you can do right away after the tutorial ends which is after the end of the video.
*The game has lots of difficulty sliders you can adjust at any time. I originally thought salvaging a frame meant you got all the parts attached to it but you don't. It's cheaper then crafting it yourself but usually you want to salvage the valuable stuff you can't craft.
hey quick question. Bought this game really recently and I've been enjoying the gameplay, the one thing that detracts my experience is that every cutscene I get has their audio become really choppy, while the animations play out. Gets to be very jarring and was wondering if you, or anyone you know, has encountered that and has a solution.
@Stav Tri can't say I have. Would uninstall, reinstall 1st. Devs have been making good impacts with their 1st few patches so happy about that
The full battle replay is something we're all looking for. I did read somewhere that they said it was difficult though.
Otherwise, I'm really hoping they do something more for pilots. They really add no unique features to the gameplay unless you get them hurt repeatedly. Which just makes them die faster.
They do have varying health, which changes things slightly. But yeah they mentioned during EA that they basically had no money/resources for pilot progression so they focused their efforts on the mech instead
100% agree.
Maybe modders will add something, does this game have steam workshop support?
@@grolsch973 That’s what Im wondering. Well I hope the popularity of the game provides the Recorce to delve into pilot stats and full round replays, modding support could bring so much!
Seeing mechs with arms clearly taken from enemies makes me think of the 2000s RTS Metal Fatigue. The game had three factions with distinct color schemes and design aesthetics and limbs could be lopped off in combat or left behind after a mech was destroyed so it was possible to have mechs sporting stolen limbs.
Well said. Metal Fatigue really stood out with this feature... you could end up with a completely new technology to defeat your enemy.
This is a nice reminder that a tactical game does not need an abundance of feats, special abilities and little bits and bobs. A mech with a sniper rifle simply snipes, a mech with a beam weapon needs to hold a beam on people. You don't need to fret if a rifle has acid damage or not against an enemy with cold-type resistance and a +2 burst fire mod.
A few basic skills for the pilots would be nice. Not a huge amount, just enough that driver Bob has better accuracy or deals with overheating a little faster or can resist ECM better. I like that the pilots are not locked into roles.
Totally agree with lack of RPG progression and lack of battle camera replay at the end. I'm going to wait on this one and see what the developers add in DLC's or updates etc.
This really needs tools to replay the whole battle.
all the rpg progression is obtaining parts for your mechs, blue prints so you can craft them and in upgrading your mobile base. Though I do hope they add some progression to the pilots, even some mild bits so they feel more alive. Gonna ask if they have plans to have the entire battle play back so I can save my fav ones.
Hey, got reply from devs. They want to take a look at pilot progression and will have to sit down to consider the end of match replay. Pilots would be easier but the replay thing would be a big technical challenege, in mean time bugs and qol are higher on the to do list.
This game looks like a lot of fun! I agree about having a "unified battle camera" that shows a replay of the battles without breaks in the action. Hopefully they'll add special abilities for the mechs and pilots in the sequel or DLC.
Game slaps, feels good and nothing more fun than shield bashing a mech into a building. I'd love to see them flesh out the Pilots a'la Front Mission - where they had passive skills that effected weapon that were equipped, like Assault Rifle Specialist giving better accuracy, or better heat management or dodge chance etc and since this is basically Front Mission x Frozen Synapse/Door Kickers I think it would be silly not to lean into those harder. I've gotten I dunno 10 hours since it dropped on steam and while I bought it on EGS I hadn't played it since that release day like two years ago.
I literally downloaded this game yesterday, and have been looking forward to playing it. Looking forward to the 1.0 releace
can you figuratively download games?
As a long-time mecha tactics fan, this is my wet gaming dream. It has MORE than I hoped for, even a highly detailed strategy layer, not just pre-scripted missions. Pilot damage, ejection, mech part customization, proper line of sight, indirect fire, melee attacks, hit locations (you can flank tanks, their side armor is much weaker), destructible buildings, different weight classes, jump jets (called 'dash'), disabling units (called 'crashing'), heat management, it has EVERYTHING! Also, it has friendly fire, which was very bold choice, but I like it! Day #1 purchase, and I don't really do that any more, I wait for bug fuxes and discounts... Exception made for this sweet, juicy, meaty game.
"Big speedy mech bois, running around drifting, while spraying machine guns at reach other" This describtion is dead on 100% accurate haha. I instantly started remembering Gundam, Zoids. 🤣
Absolutely loving the game so far. I love using my super heavy to bully lighter mechs, shield bashing them to the ground and taking them out while they're helpless.
The music is fantastic, too.
That cinematic replay that you suggested was the first thing that came to mind for me
I love how you play past the tutorial of some games now and still explain somewhat of how the game mechanics are compared to other games, I don’t know if anyone else has noticed that from your previous videos but I did and I appreciate it!
NOPE !! you are the ONLY ONE
Except here he doesnt play past the tutorial, and some of his issues are addressed once you get into the game proper.
I bought it on Epic when it released a while ago; I particularly appreciate that the devs are providing their roadmap in the game, itself. This game reminds me a *lot* of the Front Mission series of games (and that's a good thing.)
Tastee Lethal Tactics had a similar combat system but had fleshed out characters with different abilities as well as the full replay camera thing you talked about. Was a super solid game.
This is a GREAT game. Thanks for covering it.
Hybrid Heaven, jeez that game consumed me as a kid. Last year I finally got to finish it, a childhood dream come true! it was so badass and weird, loved it. And you get bonus nerdy points for bringing it up, ya lovable dork =P
Frozen Synapse meets Into the Breach. It is actually fairly interesting. You can tell there is some depth you can dig into if you want it, and you can smash and bash if you want. It feels chunky when you first start playing, but with familiarity it smooths out nicely.
Oh, and you can paint them real pretty or hideously shiney (colors with dots in the corner are 'metalic')
been playing this game since it was first available, i CAN CONFIRM, you can build tanky mechs in this game.
Can you have multiple mobile bases to attack multiple bases with different teams similar to XCOM?
@@PolarPandah nah, one mobile base, unless they change in in the future
cant wait to see what they do. I think a lot of your suggestions would make it much better. Would love the action cam at the end, pilot customizing ect.
I have played a much earlier build. It jumped at me because as a former video editor I immediately recognized the non-linear editing table. That was ridiculous, comforting and an insta-buy. Never regretted since and will come back later to test all the meat they attached to the bare carcass of an idea.
As much as I am an old BT fan, I recognize this game as not a direct competitor, but a legitimate tactical game on it's own that doesn't follow in tracks of either Panzer General, 2K XCOM (like 90% do) or whatever staple you might come up with.
P.S.: the game did become a lot harder pretty fast throwing you on a race of both up-armoring your units (with many balancing options) and learning to stay out of range/LoS, because there would be beam weapons obliterating any amount of HP in 2s time if you don't dodge. A pleasant type of challenge.
The game also reminds of Laser Squad: Nemesis, a good memory - we've played a few hilarious matches in that one.
Glad this game is on Steam now. Remember you covered this about 2 years ago but it was Epic exclusive so I nope out lol.
Oh man, haven't heard the name ChromeHounds in sooo long. By far one of my favorite mech games.
I think this is the first ever indie game I've played before a Splattercatgaming video on it.
Picked this up years ago on Epic, haven't thought about til the steam release. Gotta say it is very enjoyable, spent many hours testing builds and pushing my limits. Thanks for the showcase.
He was a chrome hounds player too. Much respect to you splat
I'm so glad it came out on steam so that I can view some videos of the game. I got it from epic since day 1 and I really love it. Absolutely original gameplay and awesome music.
"They don't put their shopping cart away."
Those...those absolute...what's next, they don't thank their BUS DRIVERS?!
Alright that's it, time to build a giant mecha army and go to BATTLE!
Looks cool, to expand on the pilot stuff would be great, I agree it doesn't really need hero abilities but having a action cam so to speak during the replay would be real cool seeing as you can set up some real cool flanks/attacks
The gameplay is excellent.
The writing is very much 'military campaign story written by people who clearly have no advisor on how military stuff works'
Basically, you are the pilot of a special prototype (the time stuff) and the Fire Nation attacks in the middle of your testing. For some reason it's a year that passes before your group decides to actually do anything about that. Since your group isn't formally on the roster as a designated unit, not alot of people on either side really know who you are, hence 'phantom brigade'.
It's a beautiful concept, just executed by people who have no idea how to write that.
@FoCross
So this is what we get when we 'keep politics out of games'. Oof.
@FoCross I can understand the desire to avoid politics so that the game doesn't go through some dumb controversy that ruins its image or something, God knows Twitter will find just about anything to whine about, but as you said you just can't really do that when the topic is about war. They definitely overdid it here, the game has no real story. It's just a synopsis to one.
Id love to see pilot skills like "feint" where you can draw false lines (and the enemy draws false lines)
Splat '' the red guys are bad okey? they cut in line and stuff''
me: So you have chosen death.
I really liked Frozen Synapse so this one is catching my eye. I would definitely like to see some more abilities and such though, either from special modules or pilot perks.
saw this on the steam recommended page and i just knew this would appear in on your channel soon!
The bad guys don't put their shopping carts away? The most heinous of villains.
I just finished replaying Battletech a couple weeks ago and saw this pop up on Steam. I personally wasn't a fan of the timeline system. I like the idea, but in practice it was taking too long to set up turns for basic move and shoot actions and felt a little clunky between putting an attack on the timeline then choosing a target. Maybe I missed something, but I'd rather choose the target first, then set the timing.
This is how I feel about it as well. And the fact that you have to move first then shoot not shoot then move. The AI does insane damage and shreds your mechs while it takes multiple shots to take their mechs down. I like the concept but it was just too much micromanagement for me. Ill go back to playing Roguetech.
@@themessy001 You can shoot then move, you need to wait as your primary action while shooting.
I actually just slap the attack target command anywhere first, put my movement in, then slide the attack target till it isn't blocked or overheated most of the time.
WAY ahead of ya on this one, and its such a cool game too. Mech Customization, unique "time based" combat, and good story.
I really enjoyed the combat loop of this game.
It's just a shame that the metagame is lacking, with pilots being pretty much faceless pawns. So you won't get emergent storytelling like XCOM. And defeats are rarely setbacks since all you lose is mech parts that take several battles to farm back.
I mean xcom soldiers are also basically faceless pawns though?
The customisation in this game is on the mech side.
And you do get to change pilot name, history etc for flavour
@@wahahabuh You said it, customisation is on the mech side. Customisation on pilots could make a lot of difference, and some added flavor like getting nicknames or improving relationship with other pilots, that kind of things, maybe even propaganda posters with them lol.
@@MrMyreus you can already change their callsigns though, those are basically nicknames
@@wahahabuh But it's not as immersive as having the game generate a nickname after some promotions based on what the character did. Anyway I'm not saying anything purely objective. I just love a focus on emergent stories and flavor that makes you care for your characters, makes them memorable. Everything that can stimulate your imagination. But not everyone is like me. Maybe you just seek other things in these kind of games.
@@MrMyreus but you do realize that xcom nicknames are random right? It's not based on any specific action those soldiers have done
This game is awesome having participated in the steam playtests before release. I will say that the mid-game has slower progress, but they really do a great job of player onboarding and reasonable difficulty curves.
This game is flat out fun, if you are a fidly type I think you will enjoy it. Check out splats review two years ago and not much has changed. I love turn based systems and rpgs and mechs and this game is the first game since battle tech (specifically rogue tech before it got vehicle fidly) that I have had a good time with. I would love to see the mod community get hold of this, spats observation about pilots is spot on, but I am having fun regardless.
Man I love mech games and its such a desert of a genre now. I wish we had a modern semi simulation Gungriffon.
Those red guys don't wash their hands before they handle food!
Loving what I've played of this so far. The overall feel is both smooth and crunchy, if that makes sense. I really don't mind the lack of depth in the pilots, because the stars of the show are the Mechs and it's a ton of fun building them up and planning strategies to salvage ideal parts/weapons.
People: This timeline feature is new and unique, wow!
Iron Danger game: Wtf bruh, you goldfish are freaking dumb.
Splatt, did you ever play Metal Fatigue. It was a mech game where you could blow off arms, bodies or legs of your enemy. Then take it back to base and research them or put them on an existing mech of yours. It was pretty cool.
I've been waiting for a game just like this, was a bit worried that it just disappeared for a few years after it was first announced, reviews are looking strong on steam as well.
On one hand, I feel like this game deserves more publicity (so your video here is nice), on the other hand it feels like the game needs more juice or depth (like you said, special skills/abilities per pilot, etc.). Maybe when more mods are created by the community it will be more worth it. Currently, among the 100 games I want to play, I have to make tough choices.
I love that this looks to be an audio/video editing simulator with robits doing cool stuff in the player window. 😍
I was hoping you'd cover this one because I was thinking of getting it since it reminds me of Front Mission. Thanks for covering it!
The mechs have that weight like in Front Mission so I recommend it. I'm a little sad poor of an impression SC did since he cuts it off at the last mission of the tutorial.
Ahhhh I LOVE this game! But you can definitely make tanky bois!
Nice game. My impression is that having a shield in the off-hand is a must when dealing with enemies outnumbering you 3x1, specially when the reinforcements arrive because of the escalation mechanic. Since you know when the enemy will shoot, you just need to use your shield to "negate" the damage, then counter. This difficulty probably will be mitigated as the game progresses, but this is specially important in the beginning. The other thing is the dissipation. I thought at first that it would be roughly the same, but it varies a lot even between parts with the same name. I prefer having a high dissipation over anything, since usually shielding is enough for tanking.
13:15 that would be really cool. Devs should really listen to this one.
Love your work. Been following for years. Just like to creep in and say your epic
This game is so good. Been playing it none stop the last couple days. missiles and shotguns are awesome
I'm really loving the UI design. Might steal it for my own game.
Spatter: im not sure if the red guys are bad
Me: BETTER DEAD THEN RED!!!! WOLVERINES !!!!!!!!
I literally played this yesterday and immediately thought about you! That's a nice coincidence
I remember from the early access that the story is that you are a mech soldier in some small non-descript. vaguely European, country testing out the time prototype when a bigger, oppressive, vaguely Russian, country invades and steamrolls your army. you escape with the prototype and have to wage a gruella war to liberate your country.
Splat actually covered this game two years ago. ua-cam.com/video/KelcIxbGuCs/v-deo.html
Im a turn based fan but the "see into the future" mechanics in this one don't appeal to me. I agree the lack of a end of mission replay is a missed opportunity. No RPG/character elements is another one. Completely agree with SCAT on that- personality deprived paperdolls. The graphics, destruction and UI are all appealing, however. Campaign? Is there any base building or strategic layer?
IMO this system is what BattleTech (the tabletop game) *tries* to do with it's turn structure but can't really pull off. You don't even need the "see in the future" gimmick for it to work, in fact it'd be more interesting if you had to gamble.
People who put away their carts at the grocery store are the people I want working for me.
They're the sort I welcome in my post-apocolyptic shelters.
yea, the gameplay mechanism feel very interesting and unique, a new wind for mech combat genre
Fingers crossed for a Twitch Deep Dive
XCOM, Battletech and Frozen Synapse influences for sure! But I'm also getting a whiff of AIRLAND BATTLE etc. And I wonder if they've played COGMIND?
Now this is a flavor of turn based that I could dig in to.
Yes, you are a resistance faction. The original prologue was demonstrating how the land came to be taken over, and then it gave you a whole cutscene-at the LEAST, it did in early access. Which you played.
You okay, splat?
Simultaneous turns! I've been looking for a game with those since frozen synapse! Doorkickers didn't impress me so I can get this one
Interesting movement system although the 5 second precognition superpower requirement is very goofy and hard to swallow.
I already love that map and the graphics, def looking into this
My very first exposure to Mech games was "Mech Assault", which I believe can be considered as western. It was a totally awesome game, on the original Xbox and honestly a comparable expedition story to Halo from what I remember. Mech games are a fair setting imo. EDIT: I guess technically my real first exposure was Ranger X on Sega Genesis, another great game. That one was Eastern.
I'm glad I'm not the only person on the planet who still remembers Ranger X. God, I played the hell out of that game growing up.
Mech Assault and Mech Assault 2 were my bread and butter!
It seems like innovative gameplay with a nice low introductory price... suuuuuper tempting.
I have found speed works for more open battles and reading the bio of the mech pilot helps and for forts/outposts heavy mechs and speedy mechs work or there is the Daka tactic
Well shit, I know what I'm doing at work tonight. Thanks splatter cat!
Battlestar Galactica Deadlock is another game with the same mechanics.
And yes - it has a "movie" at the end of your every mission ;-)
Battle camera idea sounds cool
I feel the need to mention that this is not a AAA game nor priced as one. I believe the regular price is $30 and will be $24 for the next week or so
Apologies if this was mentioned and I missed it
So you want the Battlestar Deadlock cinematic at the end. I agree it would be neat if they did it.
The red guys pre-order games.
At first glance this didn't seem like the kind of thing I'd usually be into but it seems like a good mix between battletech and battlestar galactica deadlock, I might have to give this one a look, thanks for the review.
How do you like Battletech? I've circled around it a few times, especially when it's on sale, but haven't pulled the trigger.
@@MarkWilson-ij9jd I was the same way about it for a while but when I did finally take the chance I found it to be pleasantly surprising. I honestly don't think I've had any bad experiences with it.
The UI is gorgeous
They definitely need a replay all at the end of batte. I picked it up the other day and its driving me crazy that the cool cinematic feel is negated by the chopped up 5 second pieces.
I've been waiting for Phantom brigade for an age, and it's been a great play for myself so far. Hoping they flesh it out further
@ 29:19 It's definitely easy to learn the basics, but it *does* get more complex the further in you get. You start getting more complex weapons, like the laser or later on there are melee weapons. For the laser, it does more damage the more it's focused - so how you stay focused on a moving enemy for a long time when it attacks back? Or how do you get into melee range without getting shot apart?
I would definitely love pilot abilities and some sort of attachment to the pilots, and also a better more engaging story. I hope the game does well enough we can get something like that as big patch, DLC, sequel or even a mod
Very well done game. I've been loving it so far myself.
you can do a few things the AI can't, mainly shield-ramming and tracking with heavy weapons
shield-ramming is what it says on the tin. you take a shield, point it at the enemy, and path your mech to intercept them in a collision course. the AI will often try to stay at optimal firing range, and since I haven't really seen any AI that uses melee weapons, this range will never be melee range. in general, crashing is not something the AI really tries to do (crashing incidentally is a stun state generally caused by 2 mechs colliding with each other)
as for the second thing, heavy weapons don't track very well, its pretty easy to avoid gatling and beam cannons by just moving perpendicular to the enemy mech after it fires cuz the turn speed when firing is shit. but since you the player knows how the enemy will move, you can just make sure your own mech moves parallel to the enemy while firing so the fire is mostly on target
I had a feeling this would crop up, was going to suggest it to you 😆
Splat you are awesome, truly!
Gives Front Mission Vibes
Same, I wouldn't be surprised if they were inspired by, not only Front Mission, but Battletech and Frozen Synapse.
Mechs come equipped with ZERO system from Gundam: Wing
They cut in LINE.
Let's skip the Nuremberg style trials, and go straight to the Capital Punishment.
i was looking forward for this front mission itch to be scratched for a long time. just gotta take some days off to play it now.
Thanks for showcasing! ^^
This itches my battletech itch without the fluff. Instant fan of the game. Have done a great job. A campaign is yhe only thing i think that could improve it.
On my life of games i need try, i also love anything mecha based.
Today in unique pronunciations by Splat: "topographic" - which I find odd from a geologist.
This looks like my cup of tea too. Too bad about the lack of characterisation and weak story but I'll wishlist it anyway for the mecha action.
13:00 if and when the devs do THIS! I will buy the game....
This game kinda looks like what Front mission would be if it was made today.
