I like that colony builder games are more of a thing now, as I love the genre, but it feels like new ones really need to do something to differentiate themselves from the rest or they'll have a hard time appealing to people who have already sunk in hundreds of hours in Rimworld or Dwarf Fortress. Against the Storm is probably the only new game in the genre in recent years that has really grabbed my attention because of how it changes things up.
@@Leglocker that's against the storm, which I mentioned above. It's unusual because it's basically a roguelike colony builder, in that your settlements are all temporary, you are trying to achieve objectives and collect materials with which to progress your tech tree for future settlements. It's quite different from most games where you usually try and just stick with one settlement. You could try taking a look at a few videos on it before deciding.
@Jasta85 i think he might have been referring to timberborn where you play as a colony of sentient beavers. That said, against the storm is really good. But it might be considered more of a city builder then a colony survival.
I like this game and have been playing it for awhile. You can take direct control of your leader pressing "C" which helps alot with combat (striking from behind or blocking) and mining as well. The leader can sprint and jump while you control them. Good for chasing down enemies or animals that try to flee. One of the drawbacks is the camera when you are digging deep into the earth for minerals. It just seems to not want to dive and zoom in if the pit isn't wide enough. 🤨

Eventually, got tired of same dialogues over and over again, and allowed the game to run for 3 days on 3x speed. Everyone started to hate the ruler, there was only 8 of us left and the good nature folks joined surrounding evil factions. You also spend half of the time in item menu screen, just to find the right dagger or the right imp leather gloves, for the right member, cuz god forbid if he or she doesn't like imp skin. I loved the video last year and super excited to see the follow up with this year's progression. Thanks splat for making these videos! Your first one got me to buy it, just been waiting for more content and now might be time to give it another go! Thanks.
It's very good, and the controls are excellent. Building, moving, and actions are just so streamlined nicely. It's really the only colony game that kept me looking at what they were thinking and wanting.
I've been playing Noble Fates since it became available on steam and happy to see it's still chugging along towards official release. It scratches an itch left burning since the sad end of Stonehearth. Mix in some of the better mechanics of Rimworld (an all time favorite of mine) and you've got a neat little game. It does suffer from some issues like managing the storage of all the stuff you'll be getting (my storerooms become massive) and the difficulty at end game typically does not keep up with your progression, making it a bit too easy much of the time. Like my Rimworld games I fall into the rut of figuring out the "best" combination of kingdom subject stats/traits/etc. and then min/maxing the hell out of it.(All Orcs, all evil, all the time!) but that's certainly no fault of the developer. Overall I really like it and I have hopes it will get out of Early Access soon!
I appreciate that you reference all the games I grew up with (likely since we are same age). Haven't thought about Black and White in a while, that was a very unique game for its time.
Happy to have the channel back, Splatt. It's been a part of my daily (sometimes weekly if I don't have enough free time I'll catch up at weekend) entertainment/relaxation for what feels like a decade now. Merry Christmas to you, the wife and the fur babies (yes, even Ollie, that little dick)
It is correct, that no mater who is chosen as leader in the beginning, one of the 4 will refuse to join. The choice of what to do with that person could potentially decide the fate of the whole colony... In Noble Fates, the characters keep remembering past events and influences not only their moods, but also how they feel about themselves and the others. Each event is like a "brick in the wall" of positive and negative emotions and while the effect may seem minor at first, it could ultimately lead to huge counsequences, like somebody snapping, leaving, hating one or more of the others and creating an overall dysfunctionality to the entire colony. One thing every character always seem to hate with a passion, is to start by killing the unwilling of the 4. Depending on their personalities, they tend to prefer you to either let the 4th one go with or wihout personal belongings, but NEVER that you kill them. This is one of the most negative things you can do in the entire game, yet this was the decision you spent the least amount of time considering of all - in fact you didn't even pause a single second before giving the execution order. I paused the video instantly after this, so I don't know how events will play out, but I suspect it may turn sour sooner or later because of that execution. Will have to see how it goes.

Hey Splat, with click issues, it may be a spring or the switch - but sometimes it just needs cleaning. It's still a good idea to buy another mouse cause backups are good, but it's likely a simple/cheap fix and worth doing or having a friend do for you and then you always have a backup :)
Sadly Corsair mice are a bit notorious for having the MMB switch going bad among a few of the models. I went with the RGB Pro because I heard it had a nice MMB switch, but now the left click double clicks due to an issue with the design (IE: it's another wide spread issue with this model).. and the thing isn't even a year old.
