  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. This organic music, which they call “Brasshouse,” is the musical culmination of all different styles and upbringings.
Forged in the depths of the New York City subway system, Too Many Zooz is unlike anything you’ve ever heard. While only consisting of three members (Matt Doe on trumpet, Leo P. on baritone saxophone, King of Sludge on drums/percussion), Too Many Zooz has the ability of producing a booming sound. This organic music, which they call “Brasshouse,” is the musical culmination of all different styles and upbringings. While still a young band, Too Many Zooz has received quite a bit of attention. The New York Post calls them “The hottest thing in New York City music”. Questlove (The Legendary Roots Crew) tweeted a video of them, saying, “THIS is how The Roots got their start....minus UA-cam to spread the quicker word. Peep NYC’s own”. While Too Many Zooz grows and continues on their journey, you can still find them from time to time
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I played in a cruise ship band with Leo (bari sax player) a few years ago, and I will never forget him talking about the solo album he wanted to record called "Unprotected Sax." Every bit the same person in real life as he is onstage.

Leo P is a true performer. buck wild dancing while doing his crazy style of sax playing can't be easy.
The thing I love about young groups like them, is that they're making really great music using standard instruments (with a modern twist) in a time where electrostep rules.

thats so amazing, i'm not a musician and love when ya'll make comments like that, good or bad, i just dig what sound good to me and it's kinda cool to find out if it's actually talented from a musical perspective, alot of times i think its simplistic entry level music and curious to see all the musicians bashing it only to find out it's not, now this group is pretty damn good no matter what view someones got, hope they make it a lifetime the way they want to

I disagree. Cuber plays very well...but everything he plays is something you can logically expect from a barry sax. This dude can manipulate the instrument to make sounds that are straight up not meant to come out of the instrument and do it consistently and effectively. This guy has taken the baritone saxophone and launched it into a completely separate genre of music...a genre that's the love child of like 3 genres forming it's own funky upbeat eargasm. And he does it while dancing vigorously. His lung capacity is insane. Sure he could sit in a chair and bang out the flawless fundamentals that I'm sure you prefer to this type of performance, but that's just it. He's a performer, not an old boring fundamentalist. Not that i don't appreciate the fundamentals, but this requires more skill in my opinion. And he's only supplementary to the significantly less impressive (although still very talented) trumpet for much of the video. The videos in which the trumpet isn't a part of the ensemble is where you really notice his shine.

I can agree with him being a breath of fresh air, but I still don't think his technical proficiency is quite up there from what I have heard of his performances. He can tongue fast, play thirds, and occasionally make perform some interesting rhythms, but I feel like that's about it.

+Ben Shapiro Good point. My one misspelled word in a hastily typed reply on UA-cam completely negates my stance on the matter. I'm not sure why you're butthurt, you're entitled to your incorrect opinion just as much as I'm entitled to my superior one. My original post really wasn't meant to warrant a long, annoying argument though, so at this point I'll be retiring from being right in this parley of opinions. Until we met again, my little frustrated incorrect acquaintance.

I would say these guys would have a fantastic and lucrative future as recording artists making back beats for hip hop acts since they did cover some Sean Paul, but I get the feeling that any attempt to add vocals to their work would diminish the song and they would easily steal the show from all but the most charismatic of artists.

a couple months ago i saw these guys performing live. I think it's something you must experience before you truly can feel this music. Ofcourse, this can be said about everything, but this music is simply trance, you get in trance when you are witnessing them live. Way better than I ever dared to expect from them, will never forget that moment... Guys if you get the chance to see these dudes perform, take that chance and feel music in a way NO ONE ELSE can make you feel.

goddamn these guys all have so much talent. the bari player, obviously, is so capable of using that sax for everything but just regular sax and that is a sign of a true musician. the trumpet player, absolute expert at trumpet, the into to that last song holy shit. and the drummer, if you look, is only using a total of four percussion instruments (drum, cowbells, blocks, and a tambourine, and to be able to make all different kinds of beats like that, so goddamn good holy shit

I've been following these guys for a few years now, buying each release as it becomes available. Hearing them develop their distinct sound, and keep it so raw is what keeps me listening. I'm glad they are getting the recognition they deserve. I share their music with everyone I meet that is involved with music. No one has been unimpressed yet. I guess 'cuz I haven't met the 58 dis-likers on here. I wonder what kind of music the dis-likers can play...

Frank, I'm a 68-yo grandma and a few days ago I thought was going to break a hip dancing with ZOOZ! I saw them on UA-cam and can't seem to shake them. There's something that reminds me of that '40s sound (Swing, Jazz and Big Band). There's a free style but diligently practiced elasticity that keeps pushing out the edges and doesn't make excuses that keeps me jumping. This is a Republic, NOT a democratic band. Each musician has their own sound and delivery, and each of those responds/reacts with the other to produce an instant understanding of the other. Obviously, practice breeds talent. They've made a bonfire with the flint God gave them. Thank you, Jesus!
