    Wow, I can't lie, all of this for free??? Thank you. I'm a bassist, heading into my university's Graduate program and never really knew the names to a number of these and was just trying to emote what I've been to told to do but these give an extremely clear picture with musical references you rock.

      I'm back. This is something I am taking to heart. It can be practised separately from a musical piece.
      Just so rewarding for me who barely has time to pick it up and check that it is still in tune. 🎻
      But I can see it will be a useful building block when I ever get some momentum going. 😍💪

    I watched the entire video with great interest. I started playing the viola (not violin) a little over 20 years ago at age 55. Because I had played the piano all my life and accompanied string classes for 5 or 6 years, I knew a few things about playing a string instrument. I started learning the viola by playing in a small chamber group and later moved to an orchestra. I'll never be a soloist (except in string quartets) so the solo techniques demonstrated in the video clips are fascinating. Someone, probably you, put in a lot of time finding the clips to use here. Thanks so much for the detail.
    I have come across and played all of the orchestra techniques at various times. (I was just relieved to learn that there weren't another 25 orchestra techniques that I needed to learn!)

      Janine Jansen is my current favorite violinist. She's fire. You have to hear her recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. It's in true chamber music form, one instrument per part, mostly her family members. Super intimate and conversational. A must hear. Revelatory.
      Though I love Hilary Hahn. Also, can't forget Julia Fischer! Love, love her!

      @@adipsous Oh, absolutely! I haven't heard Jansen's take on Vivaldi'sFour Seasons, but after this suggestion, I will HAVE to check it out! My favorite recording of hers is Tchaikovsky's violin concerto.
      Oh, yes, Julia Fischer! multi-talent godess! That reminds me I should finally listen to her Dvorak recording. I've been meaning to do that.

      Violin and viola in playful, friendly, loving conversation - orchestra supporting them in their relationship. Mozart isn't one of my big, go-to composers, though I appreciate many of his works - operas, masses, many I haven't listened to yet, I'm sure - but this Sinfonia Concertante in E flat Major is a special, inspired, and utterly charming, piece.
      I'm floored that I wasn't really aware that Dvorák wrote a violin concerto. I love Dvorák - his cello concerto, his 7th symphony, his wind serenade (which i conducted in performance in college!), being some favorites. I'll check out Julia (i agree: goddess!) making it hers.

    • @michael_koski
      @michael_koski 2 роки тому +1

      @@adipsous Thank you for the suggestion! I will surely check it out! I do agree, Mozart isn't my go-to composer either, though I appreciate his violin concertos.
      I love the concerto! Many think it doesn't match his quality, or that it doesn't live up to expectation, but I strongly disagree. I greatly encourage you to listen to it! I haven't listened to is 7th symphony complete, only bits of it, but I (as many do) love his 9th, and, of course, "The Water Goblin" is fun to listen to. That's so wonderful you got to conduct his serenade!

    Love your chopping! Didn’t know about that technique! Must learn it somehow 😀
    I think you missed Sul Ponticello in orchestral playing? And harmonics in solo playing require a good certain bowing technique (I think - although there is no name for it). And left hand pizzicato doesn’t require the bow at all 😂
    Finally I think tremolo requires THREE lines not two, since that is only repeated semi-quavers.
    Thank you for your excellent compilation though. It is very useful and entertaining ❤
