They wanted to make an M&L game with a third party member... That means there's an alternate universe where Wario was in this game instead of a second Mario. And probably where Alphadream didn't go bankrupt cuz that could've been SUCH a fun game!
The Mario and Luigi series is more consistent than the Paper Mario series, even Paper Jam still has great gameplay and I can't really say that for Sticker Star, from the trailers we've seen Brothership's gameplay is exactly the same as every other game in the series just with a few extras like the normal attacks are now brother attacks and Luigi logic looks like a fun Mechanic. Since they had 5 games and 2 remakes to work on, brothership is probably the easiest jump to a home console and a new development team in Nintendo history
You know funniest thing is that originally I had a joke in the video talking about the consistency with Mario & Luigi compare to Paper Mario and state that it’s ironic the one that’s really controversial is the one with Paper Mario in it lmao
I really wish this game could’ve gotten the time and money to really execute on its premise to the fullest. Unfortunately the scope had to be massively reduced because of the limits, but what we got I think is still a very fun game with the best pure gameplay in the series with the best arcade/boss fight side mode in the series.
I honestly enjoyed paper jam, sure the story & side characters could have been better, but overall it's got solid gameplay & a decent paper craft battle system. I had always hoped Nintendo would have made a sequel with Mario & Luigi going into the paper world...
I remember the first time I played this game was right after Origami King, I honestly didn’t like OK very much. I basically had pretty high expectations for OK which set up for a MASSIVE disappointment and really lowered my expectations for Paper Jam. But those low expectations helped me enjoy it a lot more than I would otherwise since it meant I went into PJ with much less critical perspective. Origami King tried way too hard to appeal to the fanbase and the suffered a lot from it in my opinion. By contrast, Paper Jam proved that the AlphaDream could still make a great game even with Nintendo’s creative limitations at the time. If anything, comparing Paper Jam to Dream Team is kinda like comparing the two Mario Galaxy games to each other. Much like Mario Galaxy 2; Paper Jam is an arguably more polished game that’s more generic than its predecessor. Meanwhile Dream Team has more substance but is much slower paced kinda like Mario Galaxy 1. There’s also a bit more side-quests than you might remember like the Bros Attack minigames boss gauntlet and Toad trivia games, at least it’s more side content than Partners In Time where literally the only side-quest was digging up beans to spend at Fawful’s badge store. I also kinda preferred the PaperCraft battles over the giant fights in past games, and mostly they didn’t have gimmicky gyroscope controls or forced microphone implementation that made some fights almost impossible to beat in the past games. All that aside, I still really enjoy the video👍.
Say what you will about my comparisons, but that’s not really my point. Despite comparing OK to Paper Jam, I meant that the games are kinda polar opposites especially when you consider what they’re trying to accomplish. And even if they WERE trying to accomplish the same thing, the way both games go about is very different. Hell the Galaxy games have even LESS in common with PJ despite my comparison. The only thing the Galaxy games have in common with DT and Paper Jam is that the individual player’s preference is just a matter of taste. I mean, I could’ve easily made a very similar comparison with Super Mario 64 DS and Luigi’s Mansion on 3DS despite being completely different games and literally nobody would care. Just because you make one tiny comparison with two random games, that DOESN’T mean that they’re one and the same.
As someone who really enjoyed Origami King, I'd actually say it suffers from trying to stick to the restrictions of the modern Paper Mario games. I'd even argue it'd be the best game in the series if it just fully embraced the old games
That’s exactly why I was so disappointed with it in the first place. The game tried way too hard to appeal to the fanbase in circumstances that it wasn’t exactly ALLOWED to. The developers wanted to have their cake and eat it too, and that’s why Origami King is a game that I really WANTED to like but just couldn’t. But that’s really just my opinion, so I can totally understand and respect why others like it even if I clearly don’t.
@Master-Fawful958 While I can sorta see where your coming from, I kinda wish you make an better comparison. Because both Galaxy 1 & Galaxy 2 are still phenomenal games in there own right. If anything, I would say it's more like going from Batman: Arkham Origins to Arkham Knight. Or better yet, Paper Mario: Sticker Star to Paper Mario: Color Splash or maybe both of them to Origami King.
I stilll found this game fun if I’m being honest. Yes it’s not everything it could’ve been but still. And as for the debacle with Starlow….i admit I had other’s perspective influence my decision; but after hearing your take and replaying the game a couple times, it’s more snark than bullying.
Yeah and besides the reason they have scenes like the one in bis where starlow and the bros talking about the shroobs is becuase Mario defends Luigi and starlow apologize afterwards
I finished the game just a few days ago. I find it a ok game. I played it in german. I liked the story, it may not be on the same level as BIS or PIT, but it was still okay for me. What I kinda find funny is that in german the Koopalings call each other siblings (at least Larry calls Ludwig big brother) and Morton refers to Bowser as Dad. I don't know if it in the japanese translation or any other language, but it is kinda sad it isn't in the english translation. That they refer themselves as siblings and Bowser's children could be a reference to SMB3 where the Koopalings were Bowser's original children before that was changed to Bowser Jr. being his only child. Speaking of Bowser Jr. ; I found it good that he made his "official" debut in the M&L series, not counting his secret boss cameo in DT. I liked it that he has a bit of character development like he has in later games like 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey and Paper Mario The Origami King. So I'm excited for his development he has in Brothership since that seems like a bit of a continuation from BJJ as well as his relationship with Kamek and that friendship he has with that Concordian boy. I think there wasn't much of normal Kamek in the game. If Alphadream weren't restricted to just use normal Mario characters, I guess they probably would've used Kammy Koopa instead of Paper Kamek. That would've been funny for dialog, like "Why do I have an old hag as a counterpart?" "Who do you call and old hag?! I'm the most beautiful Magikoopa in the Kingdom!"😂 But since we don't have a "normal" Kammy Koopa in any of the Mario games besides Paper Mario 64 & TTYD, I can understand why they chose Paper Kamek. About the Sidequests; I found the Toad Missions were okay, just the Yoshi races were a bit annoying. I enjoy the Boss Ring, Paper Craft Ring and Attackathon. I like it that they added autosave but personally found it annoying that there is a counter for how many times you did a battle/attack. Also find it a bit sad and weird that the Koopalings aren't in the Boss ring. And what is really sad is that they didn't include Toadsworth in the game and that Dream Team his last official appearance was if you don't count the remakes of Superstar Saga, Bowser's Inside Story, Sunshine and Thousand Year Door. I also find it weird that the Elite Trio wasn't there as well. The little details; I liked the paper craft star effect when defeating a paper boss. The small tease about the Paper Koopalings which happen in Color Splash. The names "Color" and "Origami" of Paper Mario's gear in the german translation, which are probably a easter egg for Color Splash and Origami King. And the loop title screen animation which hadn't happened since PIT. And the mention of the Year of Luigi.
I think the Luigi slander over all in this game is more criticized for Dream Team going out of its way to make Luigi more confident and overall respectable to the point where even Bowser curses him by name at the end of it all, but mixed with the bland nature of Paper Jam, to revert back to the status quo on Luigi is all the more apparent
I wanted to like this game a lot when it released. A crossover of my favorite Mario RPGs sounds like the greatest thing ever. And, instead, we got this. While having great quality of life improvements and fun boss fights, everything else is just... eeehhh.
i realy wanna get into this game, i loved mario rpg on snes and later paper mario on 64 and gc. i tried the handheld versions of this franchise but i cant get used to the tagteam controls, for me it felt a bit like a gimmick thats forced upon you. i do gonna give the switch version another change and hope i can get past that stage
I loved Paper Jam, it had it's own problems, but i still enjoyed the game nonetheless. Though i did wish Paper Luigi was at least an NPC instead of being thrown into Music Playing after beating the game once.
To be honest, I haven't played Mario and Luigi Dream Team and Paper Jam because I don't have any of those 3ds game cards or digital downloads. And since Citra Emulator was taken down, I can't continue this game very slowly. I don't like slow 3ds emulators.
This is objectively the worst game in the franchise IT’S NOT A BAD GAME, IT’S A GOOD GAME, but it’s clearly the worst Mario and Luigi because of the lost potential 6:41 This idea was better than waste the shot of the Paper crossover Both Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario have lots of characters, lots of beautiful locations, lots of interesting bosses, and here they reduce them to their most basic concepts, I understand to not expect a way to excessive crossover, but I at least expect SOMETHING better that what this was 7:40 Well, this was also the THIRD TIME she comes back in a row, we’re kinda sick of her at this point, we need another companion by now
Paper Jam is pretty overhated. I agree it was an miss potential of seeing two crossovers of the Mario RPG series collide and do things that we could've seen. But as far as gameplay goes, it's pretty decent and as controversy as it may sound, I enjoyed this game more than Dream Team because it doesn't suffered alot of pacing issue that drags the game down & I think the gameplay in Paper Jam is done better. It still doesn't beat Superstar Saga or Bowser's Inside Story. But I thought the game is decent enough. Thankfully this isn't the last game of the series. So let's hope Brothership does well.
The story is definitely the weakest part of the game for me, I mean it had so much potential in concept, but it was fumbled in execution because of the mario mandates and the over ambition you just mentioned. Like, imagine this game's antagonist being Paper Fawful, that would've been a great way to bring him back in some form.
The Mario Mandates thing was never real it was something made up from Intelligent Systems made up as literally every other studio was able to still do creative characters even the sports games Of Course there are guidelines when it comes to Mario games but that’s literally just a character bible which is a normal thing for entertainment in general
I always felt like this game fell victim to the same "no-more-unique-characters ruleset" that caused paper mario sticker star, color splash and origami king to be much blander than their predecessors. Aside from enemies, you only encounter generic toads. ...from both universes. You also only get the traditional generic mario settings (grass, desert, icy mountain, tropical island) Another one of the characteristics of this ruleset is that bosses end up being koopalings and the story is nothing more than "peach is kidnapped by bowser". So yeah, this just felt like the most generic mario&luigi game they could make. So no, aside from the battle system, I didn't really like this game that much. It felt very bland. By the way, alphadream DID make more mario&luigi games. They remade superstar saga and bowsers' inside story for 3DS after all, using the dream team art style. These remakes flopped though, especially bowsers' inside story. But it was a stupid decision to remake that one: the original game could still be played on 3DS over backward compatibility back then. So yeah, I think paper jam and the bowsers' inside story remake killed alphadream. And it was such a shame. I really enjoyed dream team!
No joke, this is my second favorite Mario & Luigi game behind Bowser’s inside Story (or third if we’re counting remakes) after replaying through all of the games in the series. This is how I would personally rank every game in the series (remakes and side modes included): S tier: 1. Bowser’s inside Story (remake) 2. Bowser’s inside Story (original) A tier: 3. Paper Jam 4. So it could have been like BIS and Dream team, where the Paper sections of the game were 2D areas. That would have been way cooler.
