Din Tai Fung is kind of a must when visiting Taiwan and never disappoints. A bit pricey, but there's true value in it. And they've got branches in various cities as well. Two months to go to have it again.

I hope you’re not just staying in Taipei for your whole trip! There’s so much more to Taiwan than Taipei: from Hualian, to Taitung, with hot springs, mountain tea houses and wind surfers, to Orchid Island and Kenting! Kaohsiung’s tallest building where you can fly an airplane through the center of it, to Monkey mountain and a beautiful mountain Buddhist temple that houses 3 enormous golden Buddhas, which must be appreciated when they do their chants, which resonates across the mountains, unlike anything you’ve ever felt before! From Tainan’s oldest street in Anping, the Japanese era Hayashi store, which was bombed during the war and has a Japanese shrine on top, and on to Chiayi and Taichung to see so many different places! The mountains where native villagers live are spectacular, with Alishan and Sun Moon Lake! There is so much more than Taipei!
We have decided to stay another week and venture out of Taipei 🙂 That said, we’re restricted to public transportation so many things will still have to wait until next time
@@OnePackWanderers The public transportation system is excellent and you can see easily many things! The HSR (high speed rail) easily gets you across Taiwan. You can go to Hualian, take a tour of Toroko Gorge, and take the train down to Taitung. It’s easy to get to authentic outdoor hot springs. 40 Inn Backpackers Warehouse is a great hostel that really is more of a small hotel! Lane 28 brunch had some delicious food, Ashan shaved ice is great on a hot day, Beinan site is an archaeological location, check out the Railway Art center too!
@@OnePackWanderers Yes please definitely go outside of Taipei!! Please definitely go to Kaohsiung then, just a 90-min train ride away. Different vibe than Taipei also with pretty good MRT and a light rail line which takes you to all the fun spots. I HIGHLY recommend Tainan, the most historical city in Taiwan, but the public transit is not great. I would at least spend a day there and hop around on uber/taxi. The temples, Japanese colonial buildings, and food are the greatest in Tainan. If you're still in the Taipei area, do take the train to the old mining towns of Pinxi/Shifen/Houtong. It's very scenic and picturesque.

Din Tai Fung's original location is the best (yes, each location tastes different) and has some hidden menu items. For example, the tiny dumplings (each just thumb size) serves with soup is not on the menu and is only available on Saturday mornings. Those were old items enjoyed by the locals (people who live around the shop and the nearby daan park when the store was very small 40 years ago. When I was in grade school, I remember my parents took me there (early 80s) and the store was just like a night market eatery size with only a handful of tables. It is interesting to see it grow into the empire it is today. That's something I miss so much since I am in the us now.
Amazing video. Love Taipei city. Used to live there from 1998 till 2002 when there was no Taipei 101. But at least I got to see them building it. Height is 508 meters or 1667 feet. Now is the 10th tallest in the world. Will they ever stop churning out super sky scrapers? Dubai's Burj Khalifa is the tallest at 828 m. Keep up the cool videos. The red envelopes at the market is used to give money to your family members for the Lunar new year which symbolizes good luck and good wishes for the new year. The guy that was talking loud on the speaker at the market was announcing his items for sale, 3 items for NT$250. You guys spurged at one of the best places in Taiwan. Amazing food there; glad there are a few in the US to dine at although the food is best in the Taiwan original Din Tai Fung!

DTF awesome! I polish off at least two baskets of soup dumplings each visit. The other food is good too, but really it’s all about the soup dumplings. Not cheap, but the one in Bangkok was like 300baht a basket…. Anyway, Lunar New Year is a good festive time to be in Taiwan. Hope you enjoyed the visit!

Hi ! Hopefully you guys are still there. Worth It (the YT channel) did a series in Taiwan pre-pandemic, they went to a lot of yummy places, some of the cheaper places are amazing. Also, check out their Fried chicken, the ones that they smash really thin and then deep fried, it's about size of my face! Enjoy!
13:12 The building below the batman light is with the biggest bookstore in Taiwan. It was open in 2006, and will close at the end of 2023 when its rent due. Some writes that it is the biggest bookstore in Asia. I haven't look into if it is still true.
Word of advice its probably cheaper to get the rail cards instead of continuing to get the tokens. Also you have less of a chance of losing the cards. You can always cash them out later at the train station. But nice thing is the money on the cards can also be used to purchase items at convenience stores, which for sure you have to check out in Taiwan like you did in Japan.
We missed Din Tai Fung and love their Xiao long bao and pork chop with fried rice. We did an instant search if they deliver to our place. We'll get what you got tomorrow. 👍😁

I used to go to a Taiwanese restaurant in the California bay area. I only ate two things. The first one was the dumplings that you had. The second one was a tofu product. I don't know what they call but it was like tofu sheets folded on top of each other. It taste so good.
Love Din Tai Fung. FYI...if you're travels ever take you to Vegas, there's one inside the Aria. Also, you missed them in Singapore. There are quite a few there as well.
DTF is everywhere in west coast USA now including Nevada. It’s amazing and you are right about the texture and their dumplings skin. They have perfected the skin that can hold the soup while being soft and tasty. By far the best in the business. Almost all other xlb skins are way inferior.
9:10 Glad you love the restaurant. It is such a popular place I almost worry it won't live up to traveler's expectation. But I guess they are really that good. When eating a soup dumpling, xiaolongbao, the 'official' and 'experts' been telling people to poke a hole and let the soup get to the spoon and then eat it. It's of course ok to do that. But I am totally preferring pop it in the mouth and have the soup explodes in side of the mouth. Watch out for the burn. But other then that. Have the whole mouthful experience is even better.

I think the closest DTF near your hometown would be the one in Arcadia in California. Still the long wait, though. The food is good but it's overrated for the wait.

How you eat and sauce the soup dumplings is important, but for the rest.. meh do what you want, it's your meal. I would have used the same sauce too. We generally eat all the young ginger as well. Was that plain spinach? If you get a chance try some stir fried pea pod leaves. Pronounced DOH-meow. Now is the season for it.

It's common to dip all types of dumplings in sauce. Some even adds soy sauce to the fried rice. There was a hidden menu which people ask the restaurant to fried the rice with a touch of soy sauce. And it was very popular. At a time they stop offering that because it's a bit more hustle in the kitchen. I don't know if they do that now though.

Like how Ronny Chieng talk about it in his comedy bit "Chinese People Loving Money". The new year greeting: "Happy new year, hope you get rich." is real. The name tag on the dog is 旺財，Litterlly means 'prosperous wealth'. And it sounds like Won-Tsaiˊ. Which Won is the Chinese way of sounding a dog bark, similar to Japanese's ワン. And Tsaiˊ is very close to Chái-dog which is Shiba dog. So the Shiba dog is there for good fortune of wealth. Some people do like to name their dog 旺財, as it sounds like a dog's name and it means good wealth. The word 發 on the left is to be pair with 財，together '發財' means to get rich. On new year some people will put up red posters with calligraphy writing of 發，to simply have the good luck of wealth. Hope you get rich!
Oh, and people also puts up some red posters of 財 but upside down. 財means wealth, money. The Chinese word for 'arrive' is到. Similar to the word for 'tip over'倒. An upside down 財 means the wealth have arrived.
Walking street reminds me of my first visit to Shanghai at the end of the work day, the train arrived and a tone of people got off piled into the shopping street we were on. It was like that for a few hours after that. Reminded me of my first visit to Manhattan on the train, after moving to the US, so many people!

We have a Din Tai Fung next to us in Southern California that we go to all the time…and the waits are no different 😂 it’s crazy how busy this restaurant chain is, like an in n out level busy but for dumplings. Mind blowing. But so delicious.
They have soup dumplings everywhere. You can order them in the morning from the breakfast shops. Not exactly 18 folds but just as good! To me anyway. Way cheaper too.
You can visit Shenzhen, it has twice more skyscrapers than Hong Kong, and its food is cheaper than Hong Kong and Taipei. New York city in China mainland.

Just a big lump of pork meat in the dough. We have a variety of other ingredients in them such as red bean paste, lotus paste, bbq sauce pork, chicken, etc.
I wonder if Taipei will be quiet during Chinese new years coming up. You guys better check out the opening hours of places there. Normally chinese spend time with family during cny. And the eve is this coming Saturday.
If you spent several thousand, for a family of 3 from the US to Taiwan, $60 is nothing. I ask myself “will I ever be back?” I only have enough to visit several countries in my life time. So when I am there, I do everything that I can or eat anything that I want because I don’t know if I’ll ever be back. Food and attractions are only a small part part of my vacation expenses. The big deal for me is airfare and accommodations.

@@OnePackWanderers great timing... that was the day we left and yes the weather was turning for the "worst" LOL... so many great cafes there.. go to CURISTA COFFEE Taipei City Hall Shop... great space and the coffee martini is fantastic also 3noodles (called Tien Hsia San Jyue) at No. 3號, Lane 27, Section 4, Ren'ai Rd - must try their signature beef noodle soups (clean tasting and not as heavy) and discovered their moroco spaghetti with meat sauce.. wow Snow Bro have good shaved ice as well and around that area 秘方雪人兄弟 Snow Bro at No. 194號, Section 1, Da'an Rd, Da’an District

Second this, get the EASYcard. Some of the bigger stations have vending machines that sell them, otherwise you can get them from the manned cubicles.
Got a transit card in Hong Kong, works on busses and can use it to shop in stores as well, pretty cool.

You should go to the original DTF about a mile away. It's the best. It's on Xinyi road in a 3 or 4 story bldg a couple blocks west from Daan Park.

@@OnePackWanderers China government is terrible, and you need VPN to access UA-cam in China, however China is a great place for travelers, it's much cheaper compared to Japan or Taiwan.

If you spent several thousand, for a family of 3 from the US to Taiwan, $60 is nothing. I ask myself “will I ever be back?” I only have enough to visit several countries in my life time. So when I am there, I do everything that I can or eat anything that I want because I don’t know if I’ll ever be back. Food and attractions are only a small part part of my vacation expenses. The big deal for me is airfare and accommodations.
That’s the difference between vacation and travel.
Try Taiwan’s convenience stores lol they’re incredible

I’m a Taiwanese, while I was watching the video, I just typed “you must try din tai feng”. It really is the most delicious restaurant in Taiwan.
Really does live up to expectations. One of the best restaurants we've ever been to, and possibly the best chain restaurant we've ever eaten at.
Steamed pork bun yummy. Day 4 in Taiwan. Says 60 degrees. What happened to shorts???? Great to see crowds. Tia very small in front of the 101 floors of this building. Looks super fancy. You only went to the 4TH floor. Absolutely love dim sum. Can’t turn down dumpling’s delicious. Big pieces of sweet delicious pork. Yes Tia Batman is coming. Excellent all around

I've eaten at Din Tai Fung in many places in the US including Vegas but I've always wanted to try it in the home country of Taiwan. So good. So jealous.
Trust me, ding tai fung in Taiwan is way better than the one in the US. please come to Taiwan to experience it :)

guys! recently started watching your video. I love them! Would you mind if i ask which camera and lens you guys use? (May be the Sony A7iii?🤔) And also, do you use any sort of LUTs in your videos or just some basic color correction? (saturation, contrast etc?)
We use the A7SIII. We film in S Cinetone and then do color grading from there (nothing too heavy just slight adjustments). No LUTs (yet) 😊

@@OnePackWanderers great timing... that was the day we left and yes the weather was turning for the "worst" LOL... so many great cafes there.. go to CURISTA COFFEE Taipei City Hall Shop... great space and the coffee martini is fantastic
also 3noodles (called Tien Hsia San Jyue) at No. 3號, Lane 27, Section 4, Ren'ai Rd - must try their signature beef noodle soups (clean tasting and not as heavy) and discovered their moroco spaghetti with meat sauce.. wow
