  • In this video I show you how you can make your own pool cover.
    My pool is quite square so this design works well.
    The main dimensions are (You will have to adjust yours according to your pool):
    My pool 4m x 7m
    The canvas is pvc heat welded
    38 mm OD aluminium pipes
    The canvas overhangs by 300 mm over the sides
    My suppliers are:
    SA Canvas www.sacanvas.co...
    Conways Aluminium www.conways.co.za/

    I searched, “diy pool cover” thinking I’d find a video on using a tarp with duct tape, instead I find someone making a pool cover with the same technique of making Nike shoes in a factory. Well done bro, I clearly need to step up my game.

    FYI
    PVC canvas only comes in 1,5m and 3m WIDTH so if u want wider then you have to heat weld / stitch pieces together . This adds to cost
    Would be interesting to know how they made the holes for Aluminium poles...
    Great DIY project but many small little steps to get it perfect and save cost

    • @samaker4

      The pipes were to long so I had to cut them shorter. I needed 8 poles but decided only to buy 6. I made up the two end poles from the off cuts by attachied them together with wood. As they would not bare a load over their distance it worked out fine.

      Wesleigh it was one of the best things I have ever bought/made. It is holding up great and working like a charm to keep out all plant material and keeping the water clear. Not to mention not needing to top up my pool.
      I have never bought one so I cannot say if it is better than a professionally made one. All I know is that is works very well.

    Hi, where did u get pole ends?My pool is wider than 3m (width of pvc roll) so I have to join up 3 pieces. Did u have anythingSewn or did u get all joining done by heat welding?Last thing is where did u get the wood poles?

    • @samaker4
      @samaker4  6 років тому

      The pole ends I got at Builders Warehouse, but most hardware store should stock them. The wooden dowel I also got there, they sell them as curtain railing. It does not make a very strong bond, but it was the best way I could think of to splice the poles. I had the canvas made up of a 1.5m wide roll of pvc canvas at sa-canvas who heat welded three strips together and made the holes for the poles. Hope that helps! Let me know how yours came out.

    • @samaker4
      @samaker4  5 років тому

      Hi David, SA Canvas did the drainage and the holes and the pockets. I would not walk on the canvas as it will not hold my weight. It might do a child's weight but I'm not making any guarantees. Enjoy the build. This was the best R5000 I have ever spent.

      No. In Cape Town you are not allowed to fill your pool if you do not have a cover. This one has out lasted 3 times the bubble covers. Also because it does not allow sunlight through you do not have to use any chemicals in the months it is on and during winter I switch off the filter. The savings more than out weigh the cost.
