If I may give my opinion on smissmass 2020 as a whole: it feels like valve didn’t try at all with quality control, I mean the sticker war paints and the one that is bright that it clashes with tf2s art style (just like Miami element or spectrum splatter) and the one where it looks like someone took a jpg of frozen water where the obvious ones, the maps are the ones I kinda issues with, I mean the landfall re skin was cute and cozy, but it did have a few issues on release like the lighting and some players having broken textures, nothing too major, the sawmill one was actually pretty fun because I love player destruction, and pier was honestly a great map, even though It doesn’t really fit well with the winter theme, how ever, wutville is the one I take issue with, it’s clear to me that valve didn’t play test this map because if they did, they would have immediately dropped it do the huge sniper sight line, ugly presentation, poor optimization, broken spawns, broken collision with some objects, easily camped spawns, and exploits that allowed people to get under the fucking map, yeah to me this update was kinda a giant slap to the face, I love tf2, I really do, it was a big part of my life, especially when I had my og steam account back in 2012 when I was like 8, and seeing it get this treatment hurts my soul. Glacial Glazed looks all right IMO. I live in Canada, and it reminds me of frost creeping up the window. There're a lot of types of ice out there. Not sure about how it looks like on the majority of weapons, though.
My stances: all of the really bright ones- yuck Everything else- yeah pretty nice Glacial glazed, frozen Aurora, gingerbread winner- good tier Quack canvassed- how dare you talk bad about quack canvassed? I’ll have you know that i have been using an unusual quack canvassed grenade launcher for the last 2 years and I have never once gotten a bad remark on it- ohhh I’m gonna give zesty a piece of my mind
5 days before Starlight Serenity was added, I left a comment on it saying that it would never be added, that it was too saturated, too bright, disgusting and ugly. I was extremely disappointed by the end of the week.
The only thing good about the Glacial Glazed war paint (besides the color palette), is that it makes swords look like they are made like diamonds, which means there are diamond swords in tf2. Also I personally like Starlight Serenity a little since the stars remind me of the pointer from Super Mario Galaxy, a game which I cherish.
Frozen Aurora, Snowflake Swirl, and the Peppermint skin are easily my favorites from this case. You're main issue for a lot of these is the colors are too bright for the game theyre in but if that were the case you should be complaining about the various unusual effects that are literally just bright lights beaming into your eyes and various other cosmetics like the banana. All three of those skins are definitely winter themed. They may not be CHRISTMAS themed but the case is labeled as "Winter" so that doesnt matter. The Frozen Aurora is an Aurora Borealis put onto a gun and the Borealis is most commonly associated with cold, northern locations filled with snow and evergreens. Aurora hits the nail on the head in that department. The colors are eye catching and are really beautiful in their gradient with the fractaline pattern and everything. Snowflake Swirl is like a muted peppermint. Not too bright but the colors are pleasing to the eye and provide enough contrast to work well together. The snowflakes are just an added little touch of white that pulls the look together. I dont really fucking care if its clip art because it looks good. Is it lazy? sure. Is the skin nice? yes, yes it is. The only issue i have with this one and Peppermint is the blue team variations are gross. The same designs just dont really look all that good in their Blu Team variation. Peppermint is a classic candy cane looking design and it makes me wanna lick the black box i put it on. I even got it in strange form how nice. Not much to say about Peppermint its pretty straight forward. Bright colors have their place in TF2. The game is a silly mess of characters from various backgrounds, walks of life, etc. The map colors can be generally very muted but that doesnt mean the whole game has to be that way especially because you've got plenty of community servers and maps that definitely do not fit your criteria for good design. So theres no issue adding some skins that fit that wacky side of the game and its community. TF2 is a silly game that isnt meant to be taken too seriously and lately I've been seeing people take it wayy too seriously and theyre ruining the fun for themselves really. They get bitter and angry about small things and its kinda sad to see. Sure the game has issues and its alright to criticize valve and want these issues fixed but at the end of the day you're still gonna have fun dicking around with friends in a pub or community server and thats all that really matters. This case and some others are made to have a little something for everyone. Want wacky colors that make you look like youre an oompa loompa? cool you can have it. Want some muted, relaxing designs that go well with hot chocolate by the fireplace? you got that too. I dont like a lot of the designs either but they arent necessarily bad, just not for me. The real issue is as you said valve not rewarding the designs with a lot of effort put in. If they added in some of those along with what we have now i think everyone would be happy.
the fact alone that you have to emphasize the importance of not going on witch hunts over opinions is a testament to how we have not made any progress since salem lmao
I like the way the peppermint swirl looks on the wrench, which is did with my strange one. I also got a strange spycrab, which at first i really didn’t like, but i do like it on the spy knife funny enough.
It's definitely harsh, if I was to give my opinion on these I definitely wouldn't have done so in the same way. However, once you can look past the harshness, there's valid criticism that can be taken into consideration whenever working on a new warpaint. When there's praise to give he gives praise, so it's not all negativity. And hey, no one forces you to share his opinion, I disagree that some don't look appealing or interesting, and that's fine.
Well his harshness can open up the community's eyes and see how lazy some creators are. Some of them put a lot of effort and rly care about the quality of the warpaint but then again its valve's choice :/
frozen aurora actually looks pretty amazing imo, bought it for my flame thrower and the color scheme just fits super nicely on the shorter barrel since the purple/blue crystals actually have room to evenly fit around the entire weapon lol
I use the Peppermint Swirl for one reason and one reason alone. A sniper loadout comprised of the Citizen Cane, Candy Cantlers, Mislaid Sweater, and a Factory New Peppermint Swirl Sniper Rifle. I call it the better waldo.
Snow Globalisation looks really good on the Soda Popper. Festivize it and you have a very christmassy soda popper to do everything worse than the Force of Nature.
I find it hilarious to compare zesty's appearance in the beggining of the video to the end of the video. It looks like he just gest more and more distressed and slightly insane
Smissmass 2020... the update everyone was glad happened, but wish more effort went into. At least thats my understanding. The biggest complaint of smissmas was a lack of quality control. Maps like wutville or the average to bad skins mean quality control is of course suffering, but I think the big takeaway shouldn't be "fuck valve" and im glad its not always that. I think the response to smissmas 2020 should be "thank you but let's try harder next time" after all, some of the hats were good, and making some older fan favorite maps more official and exposing them to new players is pretty great. I get the sense this was planned to be a pretty big deal of an update, but for some reason they stopped part way through making it and rushed its finalization. I get this sense from stories about some of the maps and items which were content creators had basically no time to fix or make work. They likely had ideas or plans, and were either understaffed or given to much in too short a time frame. I dont think that should be an excuse, nor does it make it ok to do this... but its just the reason it is the way it is. I'm probably incoherent, and I'm going to stop before I make a fool of myself, but ultimately I think rather than just hate it, we can use this as a learning tool. Smissmass 2020 will hopefully be used as an example of "good intentions only really matter if you work to make the end result good as well"
@@MrCastleburger i don't know if you read my comment or not. Im not talking about cutting them slack. My point is alot of reactions to updates are negative critism "this sucks" "this is terrible" but never "ok this is what you did right, and here's where to improve". My whole point was not to cut them slack but coherently explain what didn't work and how to make it better as opposed to the simple "f valve" response which will ultimately continue the cycle of half assed updates because "whatever the community hates everything we do". You say we tried for years, but honestly I mostly remember people just dismissing everything as bad and encouraging people to continue making it worse by providing hate towards content creators and valve. My whole point is to just say "hey, we see this trend, and let's work on a way to fix it" The community needs to provide valuable feedback, and not just say "you suck for not caring about us" we need to point out things like "you need map play testers" "skins should have a vetting process as to the origin of their design. And/or should have to follow certain criteria" possibly only allowing a certain number of sticker skins per case (max 1 would be nice, 0 preferable). Also while not every hat was great, and some were kinda hat bait like the particulate protector, others were pretty neat and fit smissmas perfectly, like the smissmas sorcerer, reindoonibeanie, bear walker, elf care provider and shoestring santa... with others that could have used a better name or slighy color change like the sandmanns brush or blitzen bowl... the problems of which could be solved with paint cans and name tags. You can make the argument that they don't fit the art style but id argue all but a few fit the smissmas style fairly well. Unfortunately the particulate protector, candy cantlers, and round-a-bout made it in though. Believe me. I'm not trying to absolve the many problems of the update. But I think jumping to the harshest reaction and denying what good it did bring is counter productive, and will only ensure that less effort is put into any future updates. Standards are important, and things that don't fit the game, or seasonal updates, and things that were just awful to begin with like wutville, should be addressed and criticized. But "f valve" isn't criticism. It doesn't help in any way. It's just a thought, and not a very helpful one. My whole point was to try and turn negativity into something that can make positive changes, rather than stew in further negativity. Im not trying to excuse the massive problems with this update... but I also don't want the good in it to be ignored for the sake of being spiteful
@Rob I agree with you. Yes, while there has been toxicity in recent years, there have been plenty of videos, forum posts, etc. offering helpful suggestions from balance changes to comp/casual fixes to good community maps and updates (i.e., Frontline, that one Mayan update). From my point of view Valve doesnt fully trust its community and tends to ignore our suggestions 99% of the time nowadays. Of course that doesnt mean opening the floodgates for a stream of toxicity towards the company (I admit I was mostly wrong about that).
@@MrCastleburger part of the distrust (in my opinion) comes from the toxicity. It happened with other games like war thunder. Where people complaining about gaijins greed and every vehicle that wasn't theirs being overpowered... led to the devs not caring and just adding in more stuff which was intentionally broken to chases away players who just complain. This mainly because the comments added rarely offered any positive feedback, or suggestions to make things better. I think the community can be a big asset to games like tf2, where its already shown there are many competent content creators. However I think we need to convince valve to get a enthusiastic tf2 team in to at least curate the items and maps that come out with each update. Possibly even get content creators and people who are very active in the community (like UA-cam and streamers) who can help play test things and send feedback to the valve team, which would reduce the time they spend checking to make sure things work. This isn't a perfect system, but its certainly better than what exists now... hell, they could even reward people for doing their work for them with items and shit... kind of like the broken "coach" feature used to do.
Honestly 2:35 I like that on the sticky bomb launcher, honestly I can see what you mean on the warpaint itself but it looks surprisingly alright on a few weapons (like the stickybomb launcher)
I got my hands on a Strange Frosty Delivery War-Paint, and it really just looks so awe-inspiring. On the Minigun, it looks so bright and beautiful and reminds me of something King Dedede would hold.
Have you considered getting the Powerjack with that skin for the memes? I can imagine a Pyro running around in Sub Zero Suit and that duck head hat, smacking everyone with the Powerjack and throwing King Dedede quotes in chat after every kill
I have to agree Saccharine Striped is the best war paint out of this collection, although my reasoning stem from the fact the colors reminds me of the Polar Express (My absolute favorite Christmas story of all time in my opinion). I've been looking to get one for the Rescue Ranger
I actually really like glacial glazed and consider getting it with "cool" effect on a knife. I find it being the best "ice/winter" warpaint i could find.
While I agree with most of your statements here, I will still hold to the opinion that Starlight Serenity is a great warpaint. For fucks' sake, I can finally make a simpleflips bazaar bargain. Great music choice and video as always, cream cheese.
Indeed... starlight Serenity is tbh one of my fav elite grades. Its so different from everything that black with the small rainbowish stars and the faded rainbow colours it just looks beautiful
Not going to lie, I do like the Glacial Glazed warpaint. I would probably use it on something like the Minigun. Gifting Mann's Wrapping Paper has a brown that looks like it was trying to be a glossy wooden bit. Which I'm ok with.
Frozen Aurora is my absolute favourite, I love the blue and purple together and the fact it looks perfect on the black box, my favourite weapon, is the cherry on top :D
Zesty, I don’t argue or dispute the sheer lack of effort on the Glacial Glazed, but let’s be real. It looks great on the claidhemore...and quite frankly, nothing else.
Why is it such a big deal if people use clip art? You can say it's "uncreative," but the entire point is that a creator doesn't have to waste their time making an asset when a high-quality version of it already exists. Clip art doesn't only exist for school project slideshows. If you need a certain design or image, and an exact version of what you need is already out there for you to use, what's the point of putting in the time and extra effort to make your own? It's just smug gatekeeping, this idea that anyone taking shortcuts is trash somehow
Hey Zesty, I like the concept of what the glacier warpaint was going for. I don't know if you make warpaints yourself, but would you do a personal Glacier warpaint? I'd love to see your take on it, and I'd also like to know, where did you get such in-depth knowledge of color and style? It's really speaking to the artist and me, and I would definitely love to go in depth about such a subject with you.
Wanted to point out the seam on Sarlight Serenity is just because the war paint the creator used as a base uses 2 primary textures, he just reused the same texture twice for texture1 and texture2, not exactly his fault on the seam but valve should've at least adjusted the texture mapping accordingly Also that the hazbin hotel war paint just straight up uses the Paint.net swirl with absolutely no settings tweaked at all
Frozen aurora really suffers from having a secondary color that is the same as some parts of the primary color. Sometimes your get an entirely blue side, or a side that has way too much purple. If they had just changed the secondary color then I'd say its actually pretty nice. Still wouldn't fit in TF2 though. An example of the secondary color ruining the warpaint is at 21:18
I for one like the secondary brown on the Giftin Mann's Wrapping Paper (though maybe it's a too solid brown), it adds some variety to the (too bright imo) main green colour But it plays in my liking of more "muted" colour schemes like the Smissmas Camo one
It's easy saying what not to do, but it would be interesting to see if you could design a decent war paint yourself Could be some sort of "how to start designing your own war paint" type o' deal
I like the last one honestly. If someone gave this warpaint to me, i wouldn't complain. It looks like a dark chocolate rainbow road. Christmas presents are normally bright anyway. But id love more of a shiny texture that would change in the light as a hight ter warpaint
I got a ten key limit for whenever a new dump of cosmetics come along. I didn’t get anything crazy but I did get a star clock frosty delivery which I used for a rocket launcher. Shame the Killstreak sheen I had available to me doesn’t match but whatever.
you went OFF on that starlight war paint for 5 minutes! 300 continuous seconds of ranting about an awful texture. goddamn Anyways how much is that Saccharine paint going for? I'll probably get a gingerbread paint if saccharine is too pricy

Great video, I hope it will raise the standarts of warpaints, even if it's a tiny bit :)
Smissmiss village is genuinely one of my favorite warpaints in the entire game, that is when on red team, blue team kinda makes it suck. Put it on my sniper and named it "you'll shoot your eye out!"
You look like a nerd from an 80s family sitcom and you're adorable no homo.
Edit: 1:48 the entire Hazbin Hotel color palette
Edit 2: shit you already did that joke fu-
My man looks like Billy the Blue Power Ranger
Glacial Glazed looks all right IMO. I live in Canada, and it reminds me of frost creeping up the window. There're a lot of types of ice out there. Not sure about how it looks like on the majority of weapons, though.
Yeah I like it too, but the blue makes it look really weird on red, similar to liquid asset
My stances:
all of the really bright ones- yuck
Everything else- yeah pretty nice
Glacial glazed, frozen Aurora, gingerbread winner- good tier
Quack canvassed- how dare you talk bad about quack canvassed? I’ll have you know that i have been using an unusual quack canvassed grenade launcher for the last 2 years and I have never once gotten a bad remark on it- ohhh I’m gonna give zesty a piece of my mind
@TheRabbit _123 same. I’m primarily a fan of gingerbread winner because of how it looks on melee weapons
At first I thought the quack canvassed part was a navy seals copypasta
Frozen aurora is really pog
I would've gotten it as soon as it came out but I'm broke
Well said :)
7:22 to 12:45.....that was a year ago. Nobody really learned from this. Now it's gotten into the cosmetics as well...
the fact alone that you have to emphasize the importance of not going on witch hunts over opinions is a testament to how we have not made any progress since salem lmao

I think snowflake swirl looks good on a pistol, but that’s it.

I like the way the peppermint swirl looks on the wrench, which is did with my strange one. I also got a strange spycrab, which at first i really didn’t like, but i do like it on the spy knife funny enough.

@@redgold1660 ok, sorry for interrupting you.
Yeah, it's one of my favourite warpaints

I use the Peppermint Swirl for one reason and one reason alone.
A sniper loadout comprised of the Citizen Cane, Candy Cantlers, Mislaid Sweater, and a Factory New Peppermint Swirl Sniper Rifle. I call it the better waldo.

Snow Globalisation looks really good on the Soda Popper. Festivize it and you have a very christmassy soda popper to do everything worse than the Force of Nature.
I want the Bionicle wall back, I miss it.
Smissmass 2020 will hopefully be used as an example of "good intentions only really matter if you work to make the end result good as well"
ye
My whole point is to just say "hey, we see this trend, and let's work on a way to fix it"
The community needs to provide valuable feedback, and not just say "you suck for not caring about us" we need to point out things like "you need map play testers" "skins should have a vetting process as to the origin of their design.
@Rob
I agree with you.
I saw a warpaint making tutorial were the guy made a warpaint that look like this one 27:18 and he uses clip art for the star, I think.
I play with the lowest graphics, so they all look horrible to me.
Same but I'd rather have festive weapons anyway
Turn your textures to medium, the drop in performance is small and most warpaints will look good and the textures in maps will also be much better
Glacial Glazed look like the TF2 equivalent to Rainbow Six Siege's black ice lol
I love most warpaints, Hana being my fav... BUt FUCING STICKER PAINTS
I love saccharine striped. I bought it strange for my shotgun and my rocket launcher and I absolutely love them
I have a Cool Snowflake Swirled Shotgun, and I am very happy with it, thank you.
saccharine striped is easily an enjoyer tier war paint and i wanna get it in factory new for all of my mains
Zesty rages at pixels for half an hour.
@qwertz oh no the vore person is here oh fuck
I personally love the Gingerbread Winner war paint. I have a strange festivized Black Box, and it's my baby.

Frozen Auroura looks like that stock background on Samsung phones, especially on the Black Box
It's nice to hear the one war paint designer reached out and asked for critique
You're the first person I've ever seen complaining about the Christmas warpaints
Oh trust me. There are way more people complaining about how shit they look. Especially traders...traders *only* look for super good lookin warpaints

This is still harsh, but i think it's normal

Saccharine Striped is the only warpaint I've bought more than 2 of, it's so fucking good
Not going to lie, I do like the Glacial Glazed warpaint. I would probably use it on something like the Minigun.
Gifting Mann's Wrapping Paper has a brown that looks like it was trying to be a glossy wooden bit. Which I'm ok with.
what if you apply the ICE Warpaint on a Spy Cicle???
i thought you were going to unbox those cases from the beginning and get another unusual warpaint as always. Happy holidays, zesty

Frozen Aurora is my absolute favourite, I love the blue and purple together and the fact it looks perfect on the black box, my favourite weapon, is the cherry on top :D
Absolutely true what you said about glacial glazed. It would interesting to see video on what warpaints you think should be added into the game.
Man, after listening this video, you sound so different now. You sound like a youtuber in this video
Saccharine Striped is probably one of my favorite war paints. I'm gonna save up for a FN strange one. Probably use it on a Rescue Ranger.
Zesty, I don’t argue or dispute the sheer lack of effort on the Glacial Glazed, but let’s be real. It looks great on the claidhemore...and quite frankly, nothing else.
You’ve covered the paints, what about the original skins?

Merry Christmas Zesty, you're my favorite TF2ber and also have superb skin taste ;) I hope you get everything you wanted for Christmas
You werent kidding at the beginning
I want to make a warpaint specifically to piss off Zesty Jesus, because I like seeing him turn into a tomato.
Ideally one that looks good and also breaks every single one of his rules.
No malice intended it's just my immediate reaction.
One of the first things my husband did when this update came out was recreate the Snowflake Swirled background in paint.net lmao
I clearly have a lot lower standards than others because a lot of the ones he hated I actually liked; especially Elfin Enamel
They're all fine looking paints, Elfin is beautiful :)
I'm with you on Elfin Enamel

18:46 *"OOPS! ALL GREEN!" The war paint.*
I kinda like these war paints
Another perfect video for ones with EXCESSIVE WARPAINT ADDICTION (EWPA)
Which warpaint rarity do you think has the best warpaints in it?
Wanted to point out the seam on Sarlight Serenity is just because the war paint the creator used as a base uses 2 primary textures, he just reused the same texture twice for texture1 and texture2, not exactly his fault on the seam but valve should've at least adjusted the texture mapping accordingly
Also that the hazbin hotel war paint just straight up uses the Paint.net swirl with absolutely no settings tweaked at all
zesty is just joseph seed in real life
Frozen aurora really suffers from having a secondary color that is the same as some parts of the primary color. Sometimes your get an entirely blue side, or a side that has way too much purple. If they had just changed the secondary color then I'd say its actually pretty nice. Still wouldn't fit in TF2 though.
An example of the secondary color ruining the warpaint is at 21:18
I like watching Zesty Jesus videos!
I for one like the secondary brown on the Giftin Mann's Wrapping Paper (though maybe it's a too solid brown), it adds some variety to the (too bright imo) main green colour
But it plays in my liking of more "muted" colour schemes like the Smissmas Camo one
It's easy saying what not to do, but it would be interesting to see if you could design a decent war paint yourself
Could be some sort of "how to start designing your own war paint" type o' deal
I really want to, I'm just a terrible artist. I would need help from professionals to make something like that happen.
That molten war paint looks fucking awesome, I’d love to have that in the game.
I like the last one honestly. If someone gave this warpaint to me, i wouldn't complain. It looks like a dark chocolate rainbow road. Christmas presents are normally bright anyway. But id love more of a shiny texture that would change in the light as a hight ter warpaint
zesty when we gettin that standard decorated weapons tier list?
good vid btw
I feel like warpaints r only good if you don't have the weapon or you like them with Christmas lights on em
Not really true. You can just get them for half a scrap on scrap.tf
Thank you very much. This video helped me appreciate more the work that texture designers do.
I got a ten key limit for whenever a new dump of cosmetics come along. I didn’t get anything crazy but I did get a star clock frosty delivery which I used for a rocket launcher. Shame the Killstreak sheen I had available to me doesn’t match but whatever.
Tbh,Glacial Glazed and Frozen Aurora is my favourite ones. Maybe because I'm a sucker for icy/winter stuff(unusual effects, cosmetic, skins, etc)
you went OFF on that starlight war paint for 5 minutes! 300 continuous seconds of ranting about an awful texture. goddamn
Anyways how much is that Saccharine paint going for? I'll probably get a gingerbread paint if saccharine is too pricy
