I'd be way more into skins if they weren't tied to shitty gambling mechanics. It is the reason most of the skins I own are Mk. 2 Civic Duty war paints, since those were the only ones you could reliably obtain at Factory New en masse. Financially supporting Valve's "efforts" in TF2 is a hard sell with how little there is in comparison to how much they charge. With the gambling, Valve is just pissing in the empty glass they promised would contain wine.
I know, I hate it too. I'd be much more excited for """content""" updates if it wasn't fucking gambling. Unfortunately, kids will keep donating their allowance to Valve and UA-camrs will try riding the algorithm with 50 case unboxings, perpetuating this garbage.
If I really had to say why warpaint hasn't caught on like hats is because of the following reasons: 1. Not only are hats far more iconic ('TF2 is a hat game'), but warpaints came around right as TF2 was entering its dark age in the wake of Love and War while hats have been around since nearly the beginning. 2. While both hats and paints are tradable, hats can also be crafted if you get enough stuff to make 3 refined. Warpaints (as far as I'm aware) are only earned with money (contract passes, crate keys, etc.), so that only furthers their lack of hitting power compared to what hats have. 3. It seems like only paint cases drop now and not regular weapons, and those cases demand you buy a key, which probably turns some of people off from the concept of warpaints as a whole. Besides, why buy a paint case when you're probably just going to spend your time with that shiny new gun getting your head taken off by a sniper bot or get vaporized by a random crit? 4. Paints have kind of become symbolic of what TF2 is now alongside sniper bots, broken matchmaking, and mediocre maps. Plus, many of the warpaints we've seen in the holiday updates have been mediocre at best and ugly at worst. Of course, all this is coming from a guy who's gotten completely burned on TF2 by the bot crisis and Valve's neglect and has purged, scrapped and sold most of his inventory. I still don't expect any lasting changes to come from the next update.
I gotta say your have really been expressing your opinions on war paints and the game as a whole a lot better lately, used to a blind zesty hater but you have changed me with the recent videos. Love what you are doing with trying to get better war paints and cosmetics.
Majority of Twitter and Reddit freaks in general hate on Zesty because he has a passion for being outspoken about things when other people are otherwise too afraid to be as such. Yeah he's had moments which are really questionable but any time he unleashes even 1% of negative energy towards something, everyone just paints him as a laughing stock no matter what.
Valve has done the little fella extremely dirty, even weapons almost no one uses like the stock bat and fire axe got festive versions years ago and the syringe gun is still sitting in the corner catching dust.
The problem of Valve time and time again picking the same creators in general is getting worse and worse. Just look at this Christmas update - ICS got another one of his chokepoint maps into the game despite it having like 20 votes on it. Meanwhile, stuff like Christmas Turbine goes ignored because it's from a less known creator despite how much hype surrounded it. And even when Valve do pick new creators, they somehow manage to go for the worst submissions (as evidenced by Health and Hell).
Good video. I’ve worked on one warpaint for the summer update so far, and I’m starting another one now (themed after the gravity gun from half life). Looking at the work shop, it’s clear just how far the bar has dropped. There’s an alarming number of creators who are flooding the workshop with 2 or more warpaint submissions every day, all of them using the same base, the same promo images, and just cycling through random colour combinations. It would be a shame for one of these warpaints, which some of the creators have admitted only took them an hour or two to make (which I’d still say is generous given the overall quality but whatever), rather than one of the warpaints you showed in the video.
Heh, I realized something. What is happening to TF2 is also happening to other media and many western nations. The spirit of the thing in question is getting destroyed by those who never really cared for it in the first place. Also, bonus points for the metroid music.
@@nigeladams8321 The observation that people don't put in much effort to understand the media they use, are too passive when things get changed, or worse, are actively trying to use that media for their own goals. For example, TF2. A lot of people don't seem to understand the art style TF2 has and many of the creators are just pumping out stuff for the money. Thus we get a lot of lackluster hats and war paints. And it got so bad that some furry got a pride flag through Valve. Another example is with 343 and Halo. Bungie made halo to be a military scifi shooter, but 343 turned it into a weird cape shit fanfiction story because of the head writers for 343 was wanting to tell his own story instead of sticking to the rest of Bungie's story. Then for the other worse motivation, you have IPs like star wars, Halo, Fallout, the whole anime dub fiasco, and so on. Here many of the creators were more interested in promoting their ideologies rather then to tell a good story. Star Wars had the Disney trilogy and similar media. Halo has the halo show and even the games. And for the anime dubs, there are many reported cases where the lines were changed to be fitting for "modern audiences." There are also many other examples, but these were the first to pop into my mind. Thankfully, it appears that TF2 is only suffering from the first part and not the latter, however, I am aware that a lot of the popular TF2 people are part of identity politics or agree with it to a degree. I've ran into such things myself, like how Array7 shut down his discord server because he found it too "toxic."
Worth mentioning - the teir system incentives some bad warpaints to be added to the game. If all warpaints were good there'd be no reason for gambling addicts to keep unboxing for better ones
This is a problem that plagues a lot of microtransaction-enabled games. The model creates a very unsound incentive to create bad, low-effort, or at the very least boring, content to make the 'good stuff' stand out in comparison.
I'm so glad this video exists. Your opinion on what does and does not fit the games artstyle has been so murky for so long, I'm glad this video clears that up
This video feels like a big coincidence for me, has i did a poll on reddit ( thats still going) to which type of warpaint people would like to have in the summer cases (which also in the poll is winning the warpaint relegated to a single or specific weapon like the old weapon skins, has you said, they where more in tone with the game style and had unique pattern that blended with the weapon and class perfectly) I hope this video blows up like the map maker letter, so whoever this contractor is (yes copium i know), see it and does something about it, great video has always and you hit the nail perfectly in one swing. Fun fact: most if the warpaint you showed during the part dedicated to good warpaint, i actually voted them.
A similar issue is going on with Call of Duty. Not with community made stuff but quality control of camos in the base game. Cod used to go out of their way to make some really cool and iconic camos for completing challenges. However, lately they've been "copy/paste"-ing camos from past games, or giving us just a basic ugly camos, in order to sell more stuff in the shop. No one really complains about it because we got other issues, but Call of Duty sold a mastery skin from a different game in the shop. A skin that demands you to unlock every single camo in the entire game, a very time consuming one to unlock, usually taking months to do so, and just sold it for like $25. That on it's own is really bad, but then they restrict it to only 2 individual weapons. So people who wanted to spend money may not even get to use it on a weapon they enjoy using. It's awful.
Gold camo back in Black Ops or the red or blue digital/stripes from Modern Warfare 2/3 were amazing. Time consuming to acquire but the only way to get them was to grind, and it was worth it, a point of pride even. They were very simple yet nice to use, nowadays you get seizure/vomit stains of a skin and theres no way you can put emotional value upon it. Too much is a common issue, but in terms of aesthetics having things that distract from the main theme ruins it, or just assaults your eyes.
Oddly the basic camos tend to look better than some of the premium ones. And the mastery camos aren't quite as nice this year. Platinum and Orion are nice but Gold and Polyatomic look kinda bad depending on what gun you use.
Everyone PLEASE, Send your positive votes on the workshop links that have been posted in the description! We need any of these works of art to be implemented into the game ... or at least one of them! Because I realized how criminally the war paint and skins in TF2 in general have been buried and how this is another major screw-up on valve's end because it feels like we are walking on dirt with a sea of treasure buried underneath
I agree with almost every point in this video except your classification of Spectrum Splattered as an “over saturated, trash warpaint.” I love it. It’s my favorite skin for my crossbow
I will concede that its texture work is of far higher quality than most warpaints we have in game. But my god, the colors have no business being in TF2
@@ZestyJesus I see your point, I’d actually much prefer if spectrum splattered were a high quality, yet saturated exception similar to pink elephant, the pyroland rainbow ones, etc. among a sea of much more traditionally fitting skins But it was a great video, and I hope valve listens like i think they saw your review for christmas 2022. We will see
TF2's current war paints feel like Fortnite's weapon wraps nowadays not saying that it's a bad thing, most wraps in FN rock, it's just that in FN players can get away with using colorful, eloquent wraps because the majority of players skins are just as equally flashy but in TF2 there is a long established art style, and lots of players agree that as time passes, some of content that gets added to the game feels divergent to it
Literally as you were showing bad warpaints on the workshop, a decent one called “sober stripes” popped into view. It’s like even the good warpaint makers know how insane and lazy the newer warpaints have gotten.
TF2 is inherently ridiculous, but... in like a subdued sly kind of way, like a hat with a spy mask of another hat on it, not "uuuuuuuh fuck it rubber ducky minigun two skeletons dancing under the moonlight with 18 paraplegic ducks doing the conga unusual effect on a banana hat."
Being someone whose been critiqued by you in the workshop by (via comments,) I agree and understand. If fact, the piece that you critiqued was a joke warpaint I created to learn how to make warpaints. Even with that joke one, I still spent at least 3 days on. There are then a couple other ones I did having a little more passion and effort poured it them, coming out as garbage, but only way to get better is to do. I did collab with a couple friends on a couple before, but after learning that the same creators get selected more often was a heavy discouragement. Criticism is the thing that doesn't bother me personally. Its the feeling of not being given a chance. Ive dropped warpaints to learn how to create other stuff in TF2, but all that was dropped because of that plus other factors that fell into my efforts. For the sake other artists & creators, we need a better moderation system & selection system in the workshop.
I used to believe valve had at least a semblance of quality control, that was until they literally added the same warpaint twice just with different colors pallets
13:20 to 13:40 I don't think I've had my heart broken more times over the course of 20 seconds than I've had in my entire time playing TF2. Amazing paints getting buried under mountains of garbage. I'ld pay good money to have ANY of those in the game.
21:16 "And when you're entire existence becomes wrapped and distorted and selling whatever looks nice, you've become a war-themed hat simulator." What was once the quintessential gag of the game has now become the reality.
never been a fan of warpaints, the VERY select few painted weapons I own I selected very nitpickily because I just think clean weapons tend to look better regardless. I would fucking love to have more warpaints that actually make me consider "hmmm maybe I should get this version instead of the clean base weapon", because like fucking hell I'm ever putting christmas garbo on any of my nice looking clean weapons
Well, the Summer Update's skins all look pretty good. Like, all of them look good on at least a few weapons; there's no obvious duds. War paint redemption arc?
@mugger4696 true, but that goes the other way around as well, without zesty, the community would have continued to gobble up shitty ass war paints lile its fine dining
Great video! Tacky is great word to describe most Warpaints. Upon returning to TF2 in early 2022, I was perplexed by how inconsistent and/or disconnected these skins are with the game's style. Also the jazz cup design that inspired "Jazzy", that was created in the early 90's, is a glaring example of certain graphic design trends essentially "time-traveling" into the 1960's based environments of Team Fortress 2.
I kinda have been avoiding watching your videos due to all of the drama that has surrounded you, however, I feel like having a dissenting voice willing to express what they think is wrong in a community helps to keep it healthy and most importantly, improve. I have always liked the concept of war paints, I have seen some cool ones but never had the money to buy them, last year I finally started working and spent some of that money on war paints and opening some cases just to realize that... Every single one is Halloween or Christmas? And the designs are also not that good? I felt like I was alone on this, luckily you mentioned it, most old war paints are so cool and great, the uranium one being one of my favorites, and recent ones are just kinda tiring to look at or just flat out ugly. Great video, I hope Valve does something about this and actually adds high quality skins
the drama around zesty is overhyped honestly. what he brings to light about the game, be it skins or mechanics, are often ignored or mocked because he had a 'bad' twitter take and got mad on stream but to be fair he could have taken steps to calm down or just not take the game that seriously once people better than him started steamrolling but hey even i've gotten mouse throwing mad before.
"pride flags" now hold on a minute, maybe they don't fit the look of tf2, but I feel like singling them out is a bit... "vore pride flag" ... okay, yeah, fair enough. That singling out is completely justified.
@@Technotoadnotafrog it’s more about not supporting what those colors represent even if they are pretty. Look at what happened to the rainbow. It’s been ruined for many people

My favorite thing to do on the TF2 workshop is to tell warpaint makers who make shit skins that they look like clipart, it causes them to melt down every fuckin time
Honestly I never liked them in the first place. Back during the Gun Mettle days it was because I hated Counter-Strike, and never wanted TF2 to be mimicking it's more successful brother. But now I simply prefer buying vanilla weapons, or stuff like The Original. Like, no Tomislav skin looks better than the original one. Sure, if you want a strange Tomislav but don't have 1.5 keys (or whatever) to buy it, sure, go ahead! (Nutcracker looks similar to the vanilla one, and is pretty good in it's own way) Although I don't like The Maul too, I think that Homewrecker feels more cartoony/TF2-like, and also it doesn't have the strange variant (I love playing Pybro, so I'm a bit biased here). Strange Black Rose when?
16:30 I've been thinking about whether TF2 workshop is some kind of money making scheme, I mean there are couple of authors with 20-30 item submissions accepted into the game with 1-2 items OR item sets guaranteed to get added each update (since Valve seems to favor the same item creators). Over the span of say, 10 years, that's a lot of money made via item submissions. Perhaps not enough to quit a job but enough for a nice side income, just imagine how much money was made on this silly little multiplayer game by the top workshop creators... crazy. And consider that even if certain top-of-the-game artist hasn't created the now accepted item, he still could be marked as contributor. And this is the case with maps, if you look at the most recent ~50 maps you can see the same names accredited over and over again, some people literally make a single texture or custom prop for the map and get added as map contributor and get the right to earn money.
Pretty much the only skins I like are from the Gentlemanne's Collection. They're also a nightmare to trade because there's so many fucking variables that you can never get a solid price on the item.

That bit at the end by Josh Strife Hayes, man, its wild how many points that many people wouldn't give much thought or care about (aesthetic and artstyle) that he was on point about and how its integrity can be compromised without direction or care.
Unfortunately, kids will keep donating their allowance to Valve and UA-camrs will try riding the algorithm with 50 case unboxings, perpetuating this garbage.
>skins are gambling
>i love hat simulator
choose one
If I really had to say why warpaint hasn't caught on like hats is because of the following reasons:
Just play Uncletopia. It's still fun there.
Man I just want the Stock Syringe Gun to have warpaints on it.
I’m glad I’m not the only one
Me 4 or uh... me as well agree with you fellas.
Overdose would be a better choice
Valve has done the little fella extremely dirty, even weapons almost no one uses like the stock bat and fire axe got festive versions years ago and the syringe gun is still sitting in the corner catching dust.
That thumbnail is something, i guess. Not my fav style. Good vid.
Fun fact about the gaudy, colorful warpaints, many of them are made by cheaters.
It needs to be stopped. Enough is eough.
im loving how the message is getting sent across the community, but there's little to no action by valve sadly
profit motive moments ☠
Heh, I realized something. What is happening to TF2 is also happening to other media and many western nations. The spirit of the thing in question is getting destroyed by those who never really cared for it in the first place. Also, bonus points for the metroid music.
Uh oh, careful comrade, don't question the regime. You don't want to be called a far-right ist phobe and get fired from your job, do you?
What the hell are you talking about
@@nigeladams8321 The observation that people don't put in much effort to understand the media they use, are too passive when things get changed, or worse, are actively trying to use that media for their own goals.
Tourists
Worth mentioning - the teir system incentives some bad warpaints to be added to the game. If all warpaints were good there'd be no reason for gambling addicts to keep unboxing for better ones
This is a problem that plagues a lot of microtransaction-enabled games. The model creates a very unsound incentive to create bad, low-effort, or at the very least boring, content to make the 'good stuff' stand out in comparison.
those are some huge honkers in the thumbnail
I'm so glad this video exists. Your opinion on what does and does not fit the games artstyle has been so murky for so long, I'm glad this video clears that up
This video feels like a big coincidence for me, has i did a poll on reddit ( thats still going) to which type of warpaint people would like to have in the summer cases (which also in the poll is winning the warpaint relegated to a single or specific weapon like the old weapon skins, has you said, they where more in tone with the game style and had unique pattern that blended with the weapon and class perfectly)
I hope this video blows up like the map maker letter, so whoever this contractor is (yes copium i know), see it and does something about it, great video has always and you hit the nail perfectly in one swing.

Platinum and Orion are nice but Gold and Polyatomic look kinda bad depending on what gun you use.
what happened we used to hate cod 5 years ago

TF2's current war paints feel like Fortnite's weapon wraps nowadays
not saying that it's a bad thing, most wraps in FN rock, it's just that in FN players can get away with using colorful, eloquent wraps because the majority of players skins are just as equally flashy
but in TF2 there is a long established art style, and lots of players agree that as time passes, some of content that gets added to the game feels divergent to it
Literally as you were showing bad warpaints on the workshop, a decent one called “sober stripes” popped into view.
The Josh Strife Hayes at the end made me think autoplay messed up

Yes. Indeed.

(Nutcracker looks similar to the vanilla one, and is pretty good in it's own way)
Although I don't like The Maul too, I think that Homewrecker feels more cartoony/TF2-like, and also it doesn't have the strange variant (I love playing Pybro, so I'm a bit biased here).

Came because of the thumbnail, came because of the thumbnail
