If you are playing offense on highlander I think that gunslinger is a better option so you can focus in the flank or staying with your combo. It also makes you more free to push the cart with your scout or heavy. Though this is my opinion.
@@justanalias5642 it would be if you planned on staying closer to the front lines to help push, but stock is still a better option overall since it does 3 fundamental things that the gunslinger doesn't. 1. Lvl3's and lvl2's are much more effective for freezing a counterpush 2. They force the enemy medic to be more careful about what uber they're using and when they should use it 3. Lvl2 and 3 sentries are much better at guarding your other buildings. If you dont have to worry about spies or roamers, gunslingers good. But in all other situations, stock is just more versatile overall. And EE is better than both of them on offense because of what it does. Namely cheaper teleporters and spawn teleports
@@aganaom1712 I guess that works, though I feel that the minies are as good for area denial as level 3s. The way I play on offense is like a second scout but slower, using minies to lock down the flank while I typically push the cart. Also i think it is a better idea to put a tele with the EE then change wrenches since the EE has the a slower build time. For 5cp however I don't really know what is better. I find I do not get much kills on 5cp, and I'm more of a intimidator, like putting a level 3 sentry outside the door towards the other teams last point so they wont push. @@StarlightTrail3 i know but 4 example when they sap your buldings and they're still fucking around trying to kill you at least in my opinion the weapon does its job very well
It's close between them and hard to put into numbers, but I think the reason why the Jag is generally preferred is because being able to build and upgrade buildings faster comes into play more often than an increased repair rate. If your building is only taking chip damage, the difference in repair rate is irrelevant (both wrenches will still repair that building in one hit) and the only factor is the faster upgrade speed. If your buildings are taking far too much damage to tank, then the repair rate is irrelevant (as repairing the building won't help) and an increased construction and upgrade speed will help get those buildings back together. Only if your buildings are taking enough damage to be a threat but not enough to overwhelm the user will the repair rate be a factor - and even then, the upgrade speed is still a factor. Those are my thoughts, anyhow.
Whenever I want to use the stock wrench, I just use the Southern Hospitality. The bleed effect means if I hit a spy or a flanking class, they’ll probably die, and since I hardly come up against a Pyro, I find the measly vulnerability to be negligible.
I would say that the main reason people like Dane and B4nny advertise the Jag is because of two reasons: 1. The reason Dane prefers it and the reason I think your study found a preference with the default wrench is because the healing downside is negated by using the Rescue Ranger, Wrangler, or Short Circuit. They heal or prevent damage from the Sentry, thus relegating the job of the Jag to upgrading. Mind you, those three weapons are pretty overpowered and will probably get nerfed into the ground in the next ten years(next patch). 2. Gamemode can change the effectiveness of a weapon. Being able to build up a level 3 sentry ASAP is incredibly important in 5 CP(sixes). In Highlander, it's the ability to be able to move with your team and recover from losses. That's why the Jag is mostly better in competitive, although the stock wrench isn't much worse and should be swapped out once you level up your buildings(if you can). The downsides that exist due to the ban of all of Engineer's secondaries and the Rescue Ranger in sixes are less important than just getting a Sentry up and shooting. A third point is that you should have differentiated between attacking and defending so we could see which is superior there. Maybe the Jag was a lot better on offense but you got less points with it due to the nature of the class. Overall, still a good video there's just a lot of nuance with the wrenches when compared to the other weapons you've covered.
I personally really like using the stock since it can deal with an increasing pesky spy problem I tend to get when I play engineer probably due to my loadout hehe.
50 rounds in a row on casual pl_badwater ? Gonna need a dispenser to heal from that one. As for the video itself, I like this take on the Stock vs the Jag subject and would love to see more videos like this for different weapons and classes eventually.
It really just depends on the situation. Jag if you want your buildings up faster, (usually setting up on defense or just generally on attack) and wrench for keeping your buildings up.
Wrench VS Jag discussions boil down to a cycle. There really isn’t a concrete winner because, every point you have for one, there’s a counter for it, and there’s a counter for that, and so on.
Zesty: says stock gets more sentry kills Me using the jag on a 32 killstreak coming from 3 enemy scouts which keep running into it: oh i dont think so Seriously this actually happened to me
Being an engie main, I support all the points made in this, though I did find that with the jag I had lvl 3 buildings up more often, due to the increased hit rate, thus increased upgrade rate. But that’s just me, you can decide what you want.
I have almost 10,000 hours in tf2 and I always use the jag. It helps me get out of slick situations as an engie and it also helps kills friendlies faster with the extra crit chance
I’m pretty sure the damage per minute difference between stock and jag is so minuscule that the damage difference value, if isolated by itself, wouldn’t be able to one-shot a BFB scout’s boost.
I remember the times when it was basically a direct upgrade to the Wrench in building territory, because there was also no slower repair rate penalty. I don't really miss those times.
You can also just switch to stock wrench when your sentry is maxed out (If near resupply locker.) to be able to keep it alive better. And if it goes down you can switch to the Jag to get a new one up and running.
I had always felt that the Jag was a bit overstated in terms of it being a direct upgrade over stock, so it's nice to see a well implemented test showing that it is what it was always intended to be: a sidegrade. Great video!
It's honestly all about the game mode. In payload I'd say it depends on what team you're on, but they're both nearly equal. But in nearly every other game mode, being able to get buildings up faster with the jag is such a huge advantage when you're constantly shifting positions
correct answer: both build your buildings with zhe jag first, zhen if you die or are close enough to spawn switch to stock. Zhe jag is good for gettin' zhe buildings up quickly, but zhe stock keeps zhem alive longer. Combine zhose two factors and you are better of zhan only using one.
The way I see it, even though I generally prefer the Jag in most situations, as I am generally an offensive engineer, I consider it one of the few sidegrades that can be considered equal to stock. Most sidegrades have a narrow aspect that is better than stock, but stock trumps everything else. Jag is for getting a lot of buildings out fast, but sucks at keeping them alive against any sort of consistent pressure. The stock is balanced around a more defensive Engineer playstyle.
I think building everything with the Jag and then switching to stock would be really powerful. You have the best of both worlds: you build things fast, and get to keep them alive.
The gunslinger, jag, stock wrench, and eureka effect are all good wrenches that can be effective, the jag isn't objectively the strongest by any stretch of the imagination
Yeeehaw! Now that's the voice of a true Engineer! Well, what can I say. Experience talks by itself so the descriptions of the Jag a "stick to your attack team" style and the stock wrench as a "slow tank, higher quality nests" were pretty much how I felt each weapon already. But as a well documented video research using actual scientific methods your video did bring a smile to my face.
Great vid! Stock (like most stock weapons) is the best all round. Glad to see it confirmed with Stats. (: I actually use the Jag far more, mainly in competitive because the Rescue Ranger makes up for the lack of burst healing and attentive teammates help make up for not having the DPS of the shotgun. The fast set up is super useful for retreating to new points, and if the enemy team starts focusing your gun, a small amount of extra healing probs wouldn't save it anyway. From what you've shown I should probably start using stock in pubs though, great vid!
I think if you add unlockables into the mix, the stats will actually be more similar. Just think about the wrangler: what i can't tank with the wrench i'll tank with the shield, therefore making all the "less survivability" of the sentry argoument useless cause of the shield. So in this particoular case stock wins, but when you throw other weapons then it's all another story
Holy accent Batman. In all honesty I thought I was watching a video from somebody's channel that I've never watched before. I was NOT prepared for that.
Seems like the Jag encourages you to jump ship more often, since it exchanges repair power and taking an extra swing to remove sappers for boosting construction. That makes it more effective for starting from scratch.
shacking my head man, the Jag's advantage is primarily the 15% faster swing speed. That stat applies in how that 30% build speed boost actually comes in to being, and also means engineer can upgrade and refill his buildings 15% faster.
I never knew about the 3 swing sapper removal attribute of the Jag until I saw it in action. That's how much I used the Jag before I got my Bot Killer wrench
not sure if i didn't notice you mentioning it but the thing about increased attack speed is... you have more opportunities to hit your target, therefore it's more forgiving when you miss
I have a strange specialized killstreak silver botkiller wrench with the pumpkin bombs spell on it, I named it "Little Tex". The thought of using a different wrench is difficult to me because I love Little Tex.
0:52 oh that explains why i always get crits when i go the 'spy' subclass of engineer basically ninjaneer, but no sentry you just bludgeon them to death
This is kind of why Jag Effect is a thing. The jag can't exactly keep the sentry up but it does wonders for getting them up with the wrench coming in to supplement or null out the downsides of not being able to repair the sentry.
This 'Toofty' method you mention sounds pretty good, might have to try it
More I think about it the more I realize I owe you, thank your sir

I had always felt that the Jag was a bit overstated in terms of it being a direct upgrade over stock, so it's nice to see a well implemented test showing that it is what it was always intended to be: a sidegrade. Great video!
I just like the faster deploy and redeployment, it just makes me feel like less glued down.
It's honestly all about the game mode. In payload I'd say it depends on what team you're on, but they're both nearly equal. But in nearly every other game mode, being able to get buildings up faster with the jag is such a huge advantage when you're constantly shifting positions
10:07 this "graph" and subsequent putting together of the blocks is probably the most creative way ive seen the jag and stock compared
correct answer:
both
build your buildings with zhe jag first, zhen if you die or are close enough to spawn switch to stock. Zhe jag is good for gettin' zhe buildings up quickly, but zhe stock keeps zhem alive longer. Combine zhose two factors and you are better of zhan only using one.
Are you German?
Australian frying pan is the obvious winner
That Austin Powers intro... I was not expecting to see that today, but I’m not complaining
The gunslinger, jag, stock wrench, and eureka effect are all good wrenches that can be effective, the jag isn't objectively the strongest by any stretch of the imagination
I absolutely love that you brought out your Texan accent for the engineer-specific video. Great attention to detail.
Jag : no random critical hit
11:33 Also Jag: two random crits
Engeniers: *texas happy noises*
I think all we could agree on is that those item as a frickin huge
I sure do love watching stat videos for a game I can't even play
Nice spy vs spy reference

Welcome to Casual Matchmaking, Zesty.
As a Engineer man myself, I’m pretty sure the Eureka Effect is never looked upon, but remains one of the best.
Same here bro but i prefer the jag
That graph at ladder half of the video was actually really well animated and smooth.
The rest of the vid was great too, but I gush over good animation
I actually use the Jag far more, mainly in competitive because the Rescue Ranger makes up for the lack of burst healing and attentive teammates help make up for not having the DPS of the shotgun. The fast set up is super useful for retreating to new points, and if the enemy team starts focusing your gun, a small amount of extra healing probs wouldn't save it anyway.
From what you've shown I should probably start using stock in pubs though, great vid!
Personally I use Eureka Effect. The yoink back to your nest at any time as long as your tele is hidden well a LOT of spys off guard, also ninjaneering
I like using the eurika because teleporting to hidden exits is op and it helps me get back to my nest faster if something happens.
The necro smasher: yo guys uhhh... yea....
*i won*
Hearing this after the Engineer Gaming meme makes me feel like there was a lot of lost potential
Love the jerma Easter egg at 4:31
I always liked the Eureka Affect, the tele back to spawn comes in more use than most people think
I just realized that the thumbnail was a Spy Vs. Spy reference.
not sure if i didn't notice you mentioning it but the thing about increased attack speed is... you have more opportunities to hit your target, therefore it's more forgiving when you miss
11:10 That ragdoll killed my boredom x,D
His people need him
I have a strange specialized killstreak silver botkiller wrench with the pumpkin bombs spell on it, I named it "Little Tex".
The thought of using a different wrench is difficult to me because I love Little Tex.

oh that explains why i always get crits when i go the 'spy' subclass of engineer
basically ninjaneer, but no sentry you just bludgeon them to death
Engineer gaming
This is kind of why Jag Effect is a thing. The jag can't exactly keep the sentry up but it does wonders for getting them up with the wrench coming in to supplement or null out the downsides of not being able to repair the sentry.
