Running the '49 GE Electric Sink

  • Mike demonstrates the brand-new 1949 GE Electric Sink for us at the Wash Party. Notice the "swirling" action in each glass created by the water movement from the rapidly spinning Bakelite impeller. The whole floor was shaking after the machine reached the proper fill level, a true testament to how powerful these old impeller DWs were. Equally unique and ahead of it's time was the external-cam timing mechanism this machine is equipped with, operating the detergent cup, pop-up drain valve, and even the lid latch!

    I never had an idea anything like this existed in those days.

    How about this. My mother has one of these still in use. It has been running at least once a day since 1942. Soap dispenser seized up and the little stainless cup has gone missing, I remember it as a kid. The lid release never did work in my lifetime, she just opens it and hooks it from a string hanging from the window trim when the cycle is over.

      When I was a kid in the 60s and 70s, and everyone else had new stuff, and we had something older like that, I would feel like our household was so poor and out of date, not to mention fashion. By the time the 90s rolled around, I realized how stupid I was.

    My grandparents had a Westinghouse that pulled out from under cabinet like a drawer and you loaded from the top. It had no spray arm, a fan thing at the bottom sprayed the water all over. It worked well. It came with the house, built in ‘62.

    We had something very similar--a Whirlpool that was portable. I remember having to load the bottom first, then adding the top tray. It was white with a gold fleck and that 40's or 50's's teal color. We used it into the 70's when I can remember.

    I know people who would benefit from one of these now, drinking endless cups of tea, coffee, soft drinks etc and using a load of mugs and cups each day - this would be a great time saver even if you did have a dishwasher.

    I love the "see-thru" look. In all seriousness, if any of these current appliance companies could creat and market a see-thru appliance, I would totally buy one. It'd be great fun to have a see-thru dishwasher or a washing machine, wouldn't it?!?

    probably cleans dishes better than the modern junk. I'd like to see and lg or whirlpool working in 50 years! THAT would be amazing.

    If you're having trouble with sprayer dispersal, you may have a problem with mineral build-up. If so, you may be able to ameliorate that with the soaking of the arm in white vinegar or other de-limer. My two cents...

    I just bought a house that has one of these. Hasn't been used in decades, and the rubber seals has eroded. What would you recommend I replace them with? I'm going to try to run it and see what parts need to be replaced. It's just been sitting there, plugged in and not used, all these years!

    I bought a house that has one of these installed in the basement still hooked up and it seems to work. I would sell it for the right price. Any offers?

    What a piece of junk. It looks like it's missing 33 percent of the area it should be reaching with the water jets.

    • @bexgolden
      @bexgolden 9 років тому +3

      These dishwashers heated the water to extremely hot temperatures, used a very small amount of detergent and washed a complete load of dishes in 5 minutes. The heat of the water is so great that it sanitizes, the jets are very powerful, because of a long lasting pump built in. The dishes dry themselves with their own heat. These units were made with heavy gauge steel inside and out, for long lasting, sanitary performance. They have larger versions of these dishwashers in use for commercial purposes today; restaurants such as Starbucks that need to get things like milk, baked on cheese and frosting off of plates and pitchers in record speeds whilst maintaining health and safety standards.

      it wasn't considered a piece of junk back in 1949! Think about it this way .. if you were a housewife in 1949 and say you were married for several years, and had done tons of dishes your entire single AND married life (most girls started doing dishes when they were old enough to see over the top of the counter in those days and then you got married and did the dishes for your family), trust me when I say, you wouldn't think this was "a piece of junk", you'd be singing it's praises! Think about that the next time you're under-appreciative, under-educated smart-ass wants to make a comment on a world-wide site such as this, where everyone now knows you don't know your ass from a hole in the ground!
