I have listened to that song "Master of my Craft" about 20 times now and I'm not bored yet, haven't even gotten to the lyrics. Generic, non-existent, non-sensical? I'll take it! And what's this about "marketed"?? I had to dig pretty deep to find this band myself. Oh well, maybe they just didn't make this music for you.

    • @robertwolfe8327
      @robertwolfe8327 10 років тому +10

      There's not a song on Light Up Gold that doesn't hit you in the face with meaning, provided you can wrap your head around the way the songwriting interlaces the lyrics with the music. They draw so many Pavement comparisons because of that (and lazy fucking music journalists), but musically they're a much tighter, punchier group.
      All these people throwing out "non-sensical" as a descriptor for these guys, it's just lazy listening. That, and the band is frankly too smart for the average crowd these days. People don't even have the attention span to listen to a two and a half minute song. How many texts do you think were sent in this half-hour by that crowd alone? How many utterly worthless videos were people recording on their phone, never mind that no one will ever watch it, not even themselves? The SXSW crowd is perfectly emblematic of that. They can't even intuit the false-stops on Borrowed Time.
      Now look up the lyrics to N Dakota, for instance, and tell me that's not a great song for the mood of these times, especially for the younger folks who are going to have clean up this mess or get swallowed by it. "Train death paintings / anti-meth murals / color the ghettos / of N Dakota." This song is a lament for what once was, and the playful cynic's way of processing what actually is, and somewhere in there is the acknowledgement that none of it was ever any good at all anyways. "Cigarette ad / vertisement country / wild and perfect / but lacking something." That's a subtle jab at the way our culture totally manipulates how we see the most basic and essential of things, nature. The whole song's just about how dirty and shameful and egregiously shitty everything has become, and how we're just fine with it. "Serf population too high to tally" is about our sad reality; haves and have-nots. If you're in debt, or if you're working some shit job you can't care less about just to have a place to sleep, guess what, you're just a modern day serf.
      I don't know, really. But I think the notion that these guys are just mad-libbing this shit is kind of ridiculous. Borrowed Time is about waking up from whatever daze you're in - drugs, booze, love, laziness, whatever - and realizing you need to do something. But you still haven't done it. I could go on but I've already made enough of a fool of myself already.
      It's silly to me that people are halfway dismissing these guys with labels like "slacker" or "non-sensical" - who the fuck are these people? Whoever manages to put together the heaping pile of shit that is a music journalist's portfolio. At this point it's a blog and some record reviews in your college newspaper. Parquet Courts are too smart for their audience so the audience associates its own laziness with the band. Hopefully they keep on chooglin', because the music is good enough to stand on its own, and the writing, well, the writing's important.

    • @bennyshambles
      @bennyshambles 10 років тому +4

      Robert Wolfe I completely agree with you and everything you wrote. The Pavement comparisons make no sense whatsoever. Pavement relied alternate tunings, sarcasm, sloppiness, irony, non-sequitors, and healthy appreciation of The Fall to make their music; on the other hand, Parquet Courts use minimal and standard instrumentation, thoughtful and frustrated lyrics, repetition, and sincerity to make theirs. If anything, they seem more akin to Tyvek and older bands like The Feelies, Urinals/100 Flowers, Modern Lovers, The Velvet Underground, etc. Yes, there's may be an appreciation of The Fall in the music and vocals, but the lyrics/vocals are also Minutemen-like in a workingman's art kind of way. I know most music nerds can play spot the band influence and it is lazy music criticism. Ultimately, Parquet Courts have a pretty unique and straightforward brew that is far from being lazy.

    • @robertwolfe8327
      @robertwolfe8327 10 років тому +4

      Benjamin White
      Holy shit! The Feelies... Yeah, they're definitely keeping to a certain NY tradition. Which is refreshing in a way, there's been so much genrefication in the Brooklyn scene (is every band's songs written by Beach Fossils?), it's nice to see some real back-to-basics if the basics are executed well and originally. I think the backlash to these guys is only coming now that they are kind of being hyped by the machine (I heard about them from Pitchfork to be honest, but where else was I going to hear about 'em? I live in the southwest...). Fair enough, but at least give them a listen. I think it was a newer track that they reviewed. Usually I just check for stuff I know, but something in me clicked that link to Instant Disassembly and I realized this was something genuine.
      I think they're a real punk band in a time where a real punk band gets called "hipster" or "marketed garbage." And these are people who jam out to shit like Mumford and Sons nine out of ten times. The times we live in...

      +Robert Wolfe You should type in all those meaning on Genius (a lyrics website where you can click on lyrics to see meanings/interpretations of lyrics). The Parquet Courts lyrics are severely lacking in meaning because they aren't popular :-(

    Banging... Seen them play as support a couple months ago in London ( the 2 solo gigs had sold out ), I felt like the only person in the gig who knew their songs. Great stuff , yes like everything else today , they are derivative , but are a couple steps sideways from their influences and I'm really digging it. That said the first track (unreleased) reminds me of Blur circa 1990 way too much.
