  • Today we are doing the same trip as 2 videos ago (along the Rhine), only this time, we're leaving Glattbrugg in the opposite direction, bypassing Oerlikon and taking the Bözberg route to Basel.
    I've included some interesting historic information here and there for anybody who is interested. Enjoy.

    Great video. Couple things I noticed is the track work looks terrific with mostly welded rail and well maintained. The station are very clean but don't seem to be a lot of people for the number of passenger trains running. Not many 180 car freight trains like here in North America. Lots of locomotives in the yard not making any money. Other than that a great ride. I subscribed to your channel. More to come I hope.

    • @lorirocks777
      @lorirocks777  5 років тому +1

      railpast Thanks! Yeah, the traffic really depends on the time of day. You can be sure that locomotives standing around are planned for use. There aren't many reserves. SBB and BLS are both leasing a number of locomotives on top of that.
      I think I was travelling behind a passenger train here, hence the empty platforms. See my Chur - Zürich video for platforms filled with people - even though a train was 3 minutes ahead of me to help with capacity.

    Thanks for the great reply below. This a cab ride on the line where we live. The speed restriction in the bottom right hand corner is in mph for the section of track the train is on. There seems to be a lot of engineering work in progress. as there are (yellow Temporary Speed restriction signs everywhere. There the normal cab sounds AWS (Automatic Warning Signal) and driver vigilance buzzer cancelled by the driver. There an interesting moment to where on a 100mph section of track the train brought to a halt due to failed signal and the driver talks to the controller and is given permission to proceed on a red signal. (what is interesting is the driver repeats back to the controller word for word what the controller tells him to do) I watch these videos on speed 2 the the gear cog on the bottom right hand corner of the video. I assume other people do too. The third rail is 750 volts and talk of replacing it Because the trains can not reach there maximum speed Easley +25% of the power of third rail lost to the Train heating: ua-cam.com/video/O7hfyN5EvQM/v-deo.html

    Do you happen to know why SBB are building the new Bözberg tunnel? As far as I could see from this film, the length of the new tunnel doesn’t seem to be much different from the one your train used. Unless the “old” tunnel is wearing out and the new tunnel will be cheaper to maintain, but that would seem to be the only reason for the new tunnel.

    Both of these airport tanker trains have appeared to have taken a lot of effort to get going. There seemed to be a lot of slipping at the start of this journey in particular. Were you sanding the rails? Is the train really at the weight limit of the traction used?

    • @lorirocks777
      @lorirocks777  5 років тому

      I don't sand unless its absolutely necessary. Newer locomotives just don't run as well in slippery conditions because of how smooth their wheels are. Older locomotives with brake shoes that are applied to the wheels have much better traction. The allowable weight of the train depends on the gradients. At the start, at least 3 times the weight would still have been acceptable, if not 4. The maximum weight pullable without endangering the couplings is 2500t at no gradient.

    IN UK we drive on the left, Left is up right is Down. why do you Change sides i seen many times midway through your journeys Please would you explain

    • @lorirocks777
      @lorirocks777  5 років тому +3

      Hi. We also normally drive on the left in Switzerland (adopted from the UK). Most neighbouring countries drive on the right.
      That said, much of Switzerland is very flexible for dispatchers. Sometimes switching sides resolves crossing problems and subsequent waiting times for other trains.
      For eg. A regional train arrives on the left side of station B and will head back to station A. Due to the change in direction it is now on the right side. At the same time a delayed goods train is approaching heading to station A. The dispatcher could let the regional train out on the right track while the freight train overtakes on the left. This is often the case between Frick & Mumpf. On the downside, this requires twice as many signals, however increases capacity.

    • @lorirocks777
      @lorirocks777  5 років тому +2

      Sometimes track changes also occur due to track work, or simply to test the points. Dispatchers are required to use each point and track at least once on a daily basis, where possible.
