How To Make Latte Art With Almond Milk

  • Foaming milk for latte art can be tricky. Foaming almond milk is a little more tricky. In order to get the right consistency for almond milk latte art foam, I have a specific technique to have it come out right almost every time.
    The important thing with any latte foam is to make sure the milk doesn't come out too wet or too dry. If it's too wet, it will not float to the top to give you a design. If it's too dry, then it will come out all clumpy on top and you won't get a clean design.
    The trick is to monitor temperature. When it feels room temperature, you stop foaming. Then you plunge down about 2mm and get a good stir so the latte micro foam mixes and is completely consistent. After the bottom of the latte pitcher is too hot to touch, it's time to pour and make your amazing latte art!

    If you make your own almond milk with a higher fat content and less water. It foams amazing and you can get clean art.

      Ashley I don’t add water to it. Can you explain what you mean? Is it a different brand of almond milk?

      David Shay I'm saying instead of buying store almond milk. And make almond milk yourself. Which is just soaked almonds and water.
      When you make it. If you use less water in the recipe. The almond milk comes out with a higher fat content. And therefore will give you a better foam.

      I need to add, for anyone who does come across this and sees that Ashley mentions making almond milk is simply soaking almonds in water. Each nut/seed has a specific "soaking time" (you can find a chart if you google "nut and seed soaking chart for nut milk"). It's perfectly fine to soak various nuts overnight. After soaking (covered on the counter), you then DRAIN that soaking water and you RINSE your nuts/seeds). Then you proceed with you soaked nuts and specific amount of clean, filtered water either using a slow juicer (which extracts the pulp FOR you) or a high speed blender (Vitamix is my preference). If you use a high speed blender, you then have to pour your blend through a nut milk bag into a large bowl/batter bowl, sqeezing until all is extracted. THEN add nutmilk back in to your rinsed blender to add any ingredients you decide you want to add (as I mention above). Then you simply blend until well blended. Store in refrigerator for up to 4-5 days.

      @@ashleeb44, have you tried (for simplicity) buying almond milk and adding some whipping cream to increase the fat content? I haven’t, yet, but am thinking about it, I want to minimize my carbs and don’t want to give up my flat whites.

    Some of my favorite local coffee shops use the Pacific original almond milk and for my Almond milk latte and I like the taste. I just got the machine and will try your technique. Thanks for sharing.

    Does it have to be an espresso machine, or can you just pour regular coffee into a cup?
    I’ve been having issues trying to do latte art with heavy whipping cream and regular milk, so now I’m trying almond milk. I think it’s just coming down to the fact that maybe I’m not doing something right, or I just need espresso coffee.
    The milk just immediately builds up and bleeds at the top. It doesn’t actually go down into the coffee before finally making art at the top.

    dude, you need to purge your system before steaming (blow out the steam wand). this remove sitting water which could be old or dirty. also buy a thermometer. it will kill you from scolding the milk. most of the common store milk alternatives have low scolding point. so it is key to keep the temps down!

    • @TheDavidShay
      @TheDavidShay  6 років тому +4

      Finder 22 thanks... It was already purged. I have a pretty good feel for the temp after years of practice, but I did share with one. I like the feel method personally.

      I get mine to about 140ish. Personal pref. 130 just doesn’t taste hot enough. But you’re right to focus on this. The 3 T’s right? Taste, Texture and Temp. #priorities.

      i remember trying pretty much every almond milk / drink. i remember Trader Joes handled high temps pretty well but i wasn't into the taste. i ended up settling on califia farms barista almond milk. it is not the easiest stuff to texture but it taste good to me and the lady. Btw, thanks for the video!

    What exactly do you mean you stop making foam when it's about room temp? Is the wand above the milk a little and then you submerge it all the way or are you moving the cup up and down?

    • @annaw1210
      @annaw1210 6 років тому

      Wondering about the same... anyone?

    • @starflower2225
      @starflower2225 5 років тому +4

      Yes, he is submerging it. Once you feel you have enough air added, usually around the time the pitcher is warm, then submerge it into the milk just a little. The timing of submerging it will depend upon the type of milk. If using soy, I add less air. Love making latte art.

    how long does the foam last? what I've found with some almond milk is that it will froth, but will dissipate after about a minute or so.

    • @TheDavidShay

      echelonchick69 that hasn't been my experience. It for the most part keeps its consistency. Then again, I finish my latte within about 10 min or so
