    I researched these the other day, the idea behind pairing the tweeter and mid-range into the same location is that it eliminates phase alignment issues between the two. I think we can really hear that here as the mid and high end are not as glassed together and therefore a bit clearer, dare I say. I was going to get these but I opted for a tube amp instead as my monitors are all I need considering my current skill level. Still on my list tho, :)

      @straightxvedge 4 роки тому +4

      Cody Carrig Hey man, as someone who is beginner/intermediate the lp6 is definitely a great deal. I’ve got them and they have absolutely served me well. The main thing is that with any monitors you’ll learn what’s unique about them and you mix differently with each monitor. Hence the comparison in the video. I’d say if budget is a worry get some miles out of the lp6 and if a couple years down the road you’re still recording and want to upgrade go for something even higher end like fluffs Neumann’s

    • @danielkisel5661
      @danielkisel5661 4 роки тому

      @@straightxvedge or you'll use Sonarworks to get +- same frequency response from any bigger, strong enough speakers, and then only thing you care about is the amount of harmonic distortion, dynamics of the speakers, how well they reproduce transients, and phase response ( stereo imaging clarity ) in your room.
      That being said, I'm thinking about getting these as well!
      IN-8s paired with Sonarworks calibration must be a killer combination, due to low THD of speakers and very decent max SPL levels!

      There’s a light amount of hiss when nothing is playing through them, but it pretty much melts away when you start putting them to work. My setup is less than ideal too, I have them sitting on their side, slightly above me in a 3 to 4 ft listening triangle between the speakers and my ears. That close in the hiss is very audible when nothing else is happening, but again, it fades away as soon as you play something through them - very much like an old school RCA based turntable. I’ve only had them setup for less than 24hours though so I’m still deciding... That said the hype around both the wide stereo field and clarity is very real, I’m amazed by the quality of sound coming from my old projects and reference work, the detail they can deliver is pretty remarkable. I just wish I had a slightly bigger space to set them up in.

    • @TazzSmk
      @TazzSmk 4 роки тому +1

      @@MrMoviePhoneEx hmm I'm thinking about getting those, with effective distance roughly 6-7ft they should do ok I guess,
      let me ask one more thing - do you think the Kali WS-12 subwoofer is worth to get along with them, or do they go reasonably low alone?

    • @MrMoviePhoneEx
      @MrMoviePhoneEx 4 роки тому +1

      @@TazzSmk That should work, you might hear a little self-noise even from there when you're not using them but it's really not that bad. I can hear them constantly in my setup during the quiet times but I also have to sit much closer and my speakers are only about 34-ish inches apart so I'm sure that's contributing to the issue - they're designed to play best around 7-9ft apart. That said, with rare exceptions the moment I start playing anything through them the self- noise melts away and even close in I'd be hard-pressed to hear anything but pure sound stage... The exception being low level talking head youtube videos specifically at lower volume levels. In those instances, I have to balance the volume of the speakers with the content to get rid of the self-noise hiss or just live with it - not great for late at night when I'm trying to be quiet, but again it's not that bad. As for the sub, that's entirely dependent on your content. The whole reason I bought the IN-8's was because they do produce pretty clean sub-bass frequencies great on their own, but we're not talking 808 sub-levels - though they can work with those, you probably can't get the full spectrum rumble from just the 8's. I can say that the last project I did had a lot of sub frequencies used in various parts of the composition that only reproduced faithfully in more specialized settings like a theater or a Bose sound system, headphones, etc... For a film score I worked on last year - but when I played it back on my friends KRK Rokits (6's or 7's, g4's I think - set to flat response on their internal dsps) the bass levels were almost non-existent. The IN-8's play back the score faithfully set to flat and are more revealing than pretty much any other speakers I used in the making of the project. All the lows are intact, the mids and the highs, they pointed out things in my mix that I never heard before and wish I could have changed before the short went out the festival circuit... Oh well, live and learn I guess. So yeah, the IN-8s can do lows great, but if you really need to live in that sub-world and need the rumble, get the sub too - I would have if I had space, but that'll have to wait :) Also, you can get a nice bass boost on the IN-8's with the dip switches in the back for a more fun listening experience, but I wouldn't recommend that for mixing.

    I love coaxial monitors. I truly believe coaxial design is superior to the standard tweeter on top of woofer design even with the compromises which these days can be mitigated with wave guides and dsp.
    Im very happy Kali made the IN-8 because it seems that coaxials just never really take off. Look what happened to Equator Audio. The IN-8s look nice however im not sure these are going to sell very well and its because of their price and specs. The IN-8s are very similar to another failed studio monitor called the M Audio M3-8 that I actually owned for a short time. Visually they look very similar with a small mid range and tweeter coaxial combo on top of an 8 inch woofer. However many things are different. The kalis use a 1, 4 and 8 inch driver. The maudios use a 1, 5, and 8 inch driver with the tweeter in a wave guide. Here is whats weird to me. The m audios larger 5 inch mid crosses higher at 450hz vs the kali smaller 4 inch that crosses at 330hz. This means the kali mid has more excursion yet there is no wave guide for the tweeter. So the m audios not only have less movement around the tweeter but a lot of it is mitigated with the wave guide. Why dont the kalis have a wave guide?
    Another spec I want to compare is how low the monitors play. Kali manual says 45hz at -3d and 37hz at -10db. I usually see similar specs for 6.5 inch monitors. The m audios say 40hz but dont state the db. Many 8 inch monitors I see these days state 35hz at -3db. Overall I think this is the least important spec because the distance from the rear wall severely alters bass response but still is something interesting to note.
    The next specs I wanted to compare is amplifier power. The kalis have a total of 140 watts and the m audios have a total of 220 watts. 140 is sufficient but these are mid field monitors which means they need more power than near field monitors. And comparing weight, the m audios weigh 5 pounds more per speaker. Im guessing this is because of the bigger amp, and drivers with larger magnets. Maybe the cabinet is a little thicker or has more bracing as well.
    The last thing that I noticed about the kalis is the placement distance from the listener. The manual calls for 2.8 meters. Thats 9.2 feet. These are not designed to be used on a desk or even a console. These are mid field monitors that should be on stands or mounted on a wall. Im guessing the reason they need to be so far away is so the woofer crosses over correctly with the midrange since the tweeters are supposed to be ear level. With a basic 2 way design, many times you can simply raise the monitor so the woofer is ear level making the tweeter farther away from the woofer therefore giving proper time alignment of the drivers. With this coaxial design you cant do that. You are forced to move the speaker farther away so the woofer can be in phase with the mid and tweeter. Which then I wonder, does this defeat the purpose of this speaker being coaxial? When a speaker is so far away can your ears really notice if its a coaxial design? I think there is still the benefit of coaxial design but the benefit becomes smaller the farther you move the speaker away.
    And last but not least, price. The M audio were marketed at 700 a pair while the kalis are sold for 800 a pair while being lighter, having less power, smaller mid range, and no wave guide. Now heres the crazy thing. The m audios have been discontinued. You can still find pairs on ebay. Denon owns M audio and Denon makes a twin copy of the M Audo M3-8 called DN508S. They look a bit different but the specs are exactly the same. Denon says they are the same. And guess how much they cost, 270 a pair brand new today.

      Kali has the LP-6's, which are 6 and half inches and only cost 150 dollars per speaker. That's the best value for the price that you are going to get.

      First review was done with a faulty speaker, redone with a non faulty and they look great for the price.
