Fun fact: Toronaga giving Blackthorne his room was also a win-win situation because if an assassin came for HIM, they would've killed Blackthorne instead.
The noble women train were to fight to defend the household. You see them using the Naginata in paintings of the period. The Naginata combines the blade of a katana for thrusting and slashing with the long reach of a pike. They use this to keep their opponents further away
It really is. We don't get this quality of storytelling very often at all. Somehow every episode has been great in multiple ways. Even Game of Thrones didn't do that for me. They even made translating and sub titles exciting lol
I wanted to write this because I needed help understanding if Blackthorne is a Pirate. Blackthorne is a Privateer, like a mercenary crew. England and Holland hired them to discover the Spanish and Portuguese routes to reach Japan. They were also permitted to attack/sabotage/plunder Portuguese and Spanish ships to disrupt their trade. So technically the Portuguese can say that John is a pirate because they are conducting pirate-like activities.
that is true. however unlike pirates, Blackthorne and his crew are sailing under the Dutch flag, so Holland is representing them. anything they do (piracy) is officially sanctioned by the crown of a legitimate nation that Portugal is in a state of war with. they are not random pirates, they are officially recognized by Holland, and anything they do to Portugal or Spain is a legitimate act of war, not random piracy. small distinction, but important. Portugal is supposed to treat them as they would a ship and crew that was 100% Dutch. its like a soldier in full uniform being captured with letters and dispatches, they are not a spy if they are wearing a uniform and officially representing themselves, they cannot be accused of spying. you cant call a privateer a pirate because a privateer is officially licensed and backed by a legitimate nation. pirates are not members of any nation or country or official "group". so if the Portuguese recognize Holland, then by extension anyone that Holland declares "works" for them cannot be pirates.
@@BobtheClone133 Thanks for clarifying. I read there were some instances where countries removed the "license" for crews like Blackthorne's to conduct business while the crew was still out at sea. So I wasn't sure if that was the case.
@@snorelax9851oh yeah for sure that can happen. if privateers do something horrible and the country that is backing the license doesn't sanction that act, then they are pirates. i guess its a way to balance their behavior. if they started really pillaging and murdering anybody they came across then im sure Holland would drop the license. Holland sanctioned them raiding Portuguese and Spanish targets because they are officially at war with them. so honestly its kinda funny because if it had been an official naval vessel and crew from Holland, would the Portuguese be whining still? they had targets hit in a war by a legitimate opponent and want to cry about it and tell the Japanese they are pirates so that the Japanese will not bother to look into the matter and discover Portugal"s secrets!
he's still a pirate technically, he's just a pirate whose actions are legally sanctioned by the Dutch Republic, so he's a mercernary rather than a pirate who would be a free actor
Probably pretty rare though you'd have to get like multiple days worth of cloudless sunny days before a randomly cloudy day, because all that water takes a spectacular amount of energy to heat up. I think what's more likely the cause of that experience is that on cooler days once you get used to the water temp, getting out makes the air seem colder but that's just because you're wet so you lose heat rapidly to the air (similar to sweating).
Shogun is that GOOODDD SHIT. Also, I'd be mad as hell if I was one of Blackthorne's crewmates and was rotting away in a prison while he's having these adventures.
The last scene of this ep is my favorite scene so far. Something about how ethereal the lighting looked, the epic music, and the very cute and endearing start to Toranaga and Blackthorne’s friendship made me feel really light inside. The first two eps were incredible, but that scene was what made the show an instant classic to me. So much heart in how that was made.
I know there's some expression of surprise that Mariko can fight with a naginata, but for women of samurai social class birth, it was 110% expected for them to be able to fight in some capacity. Probably not with sword or bow, but absolutely with dagger or "spear". They were taught because often when men were afield, they would be the ones protecting homes. Some (but very few) female samurai are famous for going afield with the men, one of the more famous (and possibly fictional ones) is Tomoe Gozen, who was "a warrior worth a thousand, ready to fight demon or god, mounted or afoot". Interestingly the clan that Tomoe Gozen was supposed to serve (Minamoto clan) was used as an inspiration for Toranaga's fictional "Minowara" clan.
@@Seek1878 yea it'll feel colder at first then as your body gets used to it, it feels warmer in the water because outside of the water the water on your body is going to make you lose heat rapidly in the air
The ending of this episode is one of my favourites. It's so beautiful... the fair weather on the boat, the dawn after the battle at night, and then 2 would-be friends going swimming. Did you catch Lord Toranaga's trickery here as well? Even between friends he tires out Blackthorne by making him demonstrate the dive too many times, but perhaps giving him a fair handicap because otherwise there was no way he was going to beat an English sailor in a swimming race.
Toranaga is slick. I'm pretty sure this dude knows how to dive. He just wanted to wear Blackthorne down so he has a fair chance at winning. I mean he's challenging a sailor to swim to shore. Also this dude is wearing like full cotton clothing when he challenged Blackthorne lmao
John Blackthorn is based on William Adams whose life and story as the first western samurai was made into a video game called Nioh. It’s like Sekiro meets Dark Souls.
